Impressed how with simple hand tools, wire, heat & craftsmanship you shape a horn, an organic variable product, into a shiny elegant handle. I like that you give the warnings and hints you’ve developed over time to keep us from making mistakes that you likely made years ago.

Great series. Thanks for posting. I wonder if a pressure cooker would force higher heat into the horn and help with the horseshoe bend part.
@woodlandsticks13656 жыл бұрын
Yes David pressure cookers would get more heat in the horn if you can get a large enough one Dave

Would steaming, or perhaps soaking the tip for a while help it to bend easier, without cracking? I am enjoying the series, thank you!
@woodlandsticks13657 жыл бұрын
Hi i have never tried steaming the tip i always use the hot air gun as i have more control of the heat .By using a file on edge, to block the heat from going up the horn .If heat is allowed to travel up the horn it will start to revert back to its original shape and that is where the cracks appear on the inside of the horn. iv been watching your posts, top man. just a question would you be able to put the horn in the microwave ? I use it to warm up my wood when carving, would it work for horn ??All the best Bear
@timbirch49995 жыл бұрын
Microwaves work by agitating the water inside your food - or wood - so I guess there should be a little water in horn, which means that could well work, but I've never heard of anyone doing it. I don't have any old bits of horn around at the moment, otherwise I'd go and test this. :-)
@Davidzapper8 жыл бұрын
Buy an angle grinder mate, that would save you hours of filing and some burring bits, you can pop them in a drill, great insight mate thanks

What's the reason for using horn above other materials? i.e. timber Is it for it's structural properties or aesthetic? Thank you.

I also want to say, your videos are brilliant, I find them informative, interesting, and actually very relaxing to watch after a long day at work. Thanks again, Andrew

What type of buffalo does these horns come from?

The horns are Indian Water Buffalo. We get the solid tip,they can measure 20" plus with the hollow section removed

@@woodlandsticks1365 where you have the mole grips on and are bending the horn. Would it not be easier to bend it around a round steel bar as a former? Say 8 or 10mm depending on what profile you wanted.
@woodlandsticks13655 жыл бұрын
I prefer to do it this way so i can keep the inside of the curl clean. And not put pressure on the outside that can cause the horn to crack By stretching it around a bar.Dave

Do you know if it's possible to use North American Buffalo Horn?
@woodlandsticks13654 жыл бұрын
I think American Buffalo are Bison. You want Water buffalo Horn, it is more solid and you need at least 12" of solid to make a handle. Lots of Countries import Water buffalo to make Mozzarella from there milk. So google it.
@woodlandsticks13654 жыл бұрын
Just had alook and found this www.worldwidewildlifeproducts.com/store/pc/Buffalo-Horns-c63.htm What you want is 12"-16" of solid tip as hollow horn is no good

hello, as far as i know, the hook on a shepherds crook handle,was there to hang the shepherds paraffin storm lamp, when the shepherd would be walking the fells at night,& came accross a sheep in distress, esp lambing time, he would push his crook into the ground, & hang the storm lamp from the hook. that gave him both hands free to help tend to the animal.& light to see what he was doing.

@ woodlandsticks.......Incredible expertise no doubt! Definitely a lost art. I'm wondering if it might expedite the process by using a hand-held low-abrasion grinder, or perhaps a small belt sander on the outer, more accessible areas of the horn. As for addressing the more difficult-to-reach inner surface(s), perhaps a dremel grinder of sorts would assist in that case. I'm loathe to suggest those shortcuts because it sacrifices your personal expert craftsmanship. I goes w/o saying, the control you have in filing instead of using a dremel tool is the true testimony of the consummate artist that you are.

Nice program BUT why are you not wearing a face mask when u do the filling on the horn and when u do the antlers as it is a known fact that the spores in both r dangerous to your lungs and i can see u r always out of breath and breathing heavily.

Hi Wendy I use a corse then medium then a fine. If look on here it tells you the grit colours, never new there was so many. Use masking tape around the shank so the compound don't go on the bark. i often go over the horn after polishing with Braso or T cut, Dave www.cooksongold.com/Jewellery-Tools/Luxi-Mini-Polishing-Set-Assorted-11-Luxi-Compounds-prcode-997-443A?gclid=CjwKCAiArIH_BRB2EiwALfbH1LLQpp6OI85UcKVpsq1DqXT3614O3yWdVFaxCdvw2WdKmqzZhz8m2BoC66kQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#description
