There's a political dimension to these street markets that is important to understand: on the 17th of December 2010, a man named Mohamed Bouazizi who made his living as a market trader in a city south of Tunis set himself on fire in protest against the rampant corruption of the autocratic regime of the then Tunisian leader Ben Ali. His act of defiance was the spark that ignited the Tunisian Revolution and then spread to become the wider Arab Spring. While Tunisia's political history since has had its ups and downs, and while many of the promises of that spring have come to naught (such as in Egypt and in Syria), it shows the role that street markets play in the conscience and identity of people in Tunisia and throughout the Arab world.

Many countries around the world have positive sides and negative . We can't judge a country through one city . Many of the Arab countries have such open market in the city centre . It is for the poor or normal people that their income is so low . The sellers are shouting to attract people and making discounts. There are many school stuffs because it's going to open again soon . The filthy streets are common in the poor arab countries because there is no concern for the environment and the garbage sorting system as in Europe especially Germany . The salaries of the streets' cleaners are the lowest .

Hi Gabe I'm a young woman, blonde, I work out and I like to wear mini dresses and high heels, lots of make-up as well. I like Tunisia and want to visit alone or with my girlfriend. Is it safe there, will I encounter any problems? Is there any fancy night life, I like to party all night. Also are there any nudist beaches?
@wafakefi20092 жыл бұрын
Hi, I hope Gabe sees your comment and replies to you soon. In the meantime, I can tell you as a Tunisian woman living abroad (Norway) what I know about women's safety in Tunisia. In most areas you will feel safe, especially touristic places (Hammamet, Jerba, Tunis...) people there are quite open and are used to seeing tourists and women in general (women in Tunisia are liberal compared to other Arab countries). Still, you may be subjected to harassment, flirting, etc. Just ignore them. There is no violence or any extreme problems you would face. In addition, the police are always availble and can be located everywhere throughout the country, especially in tourist areas. Avoid crowded places and beware of pickpockets best by refraining from showing off your mobile and all valuables. Pickpockets can appear any time. As in the rest of the world, avoid going out at night in places other than those I mentioned or places you know. Night life: Tunisia (especially Gammarth, Hammamet, Sousse Djerba ...) is a clubbing country par excellence. You can check the nightlife in Tunis on youtube. Nudist beachs: No, no nudists beaches. Tips: If you have local friends, it would be better to be escorted by them so you can avoid uninteresting places. A guided tour would also be a good idea. I will visit Tunisia this fall with my husband and family (mid-September) If you have decided to visit Tunisia in the same period I can show you around. Otherwise, follow my tips: choose the right places, be escorted by a friend and you'll be fine.
