The word Yang (阳) orignates from the convention of naming a city by its orientation, in relaton to a mountain or a river. Since Guiyang is on the south side of Gui Mountain (贵山), that's how it got its name, because the south side of a mountain receives more sunlight. Another explanation says that the word Gui (贵) means 'precious', as the sunlight is rare throughout the year there.

impressive - 印象深刻 spectacular - 壯觀 The city name "貴陽“ (Gui Yang) should not be a straight-up translation of "Expensive Sun" :) "陽“ (Yang) here is closer to its use in Yin/Yang - and when used in geography, it stands for "south of a mountain" or "north of a river". In this case, there is a hill north of the city, which is named - yes you guessed it, 貴山 (Gui Mountain), and thus, "the City South of Gui Mountain), or, 貴陽。 Lastly, I Googled a bit and learned that, the "royal mansion" is 花果園藝術中心(Garden Art Center). But practically, it is the headquarters of the real estate development company, Heng Li Group, who developed that area.
