You are definitely exaggerating the situation. One lady, I am sure, can only safely visit places where there are a lot of people around at midnight. These county-level cities or part of their urban areas are developed lately, so you can see the surroundings are newly desiged and very modernised. Even those age-old inner city areas of the first tier cities are no rivals to them. However, this is not the full story of Chinese county-level cities. You can still see a lot of old towns with chaotic traffic planning, poor public sanitation of litters, dilapidated age-old houses and poor quality of residents. In a word, China has made great progress, but it still has a long way to go to be a developed country.

just read it. in the history of PRC, guizhou can have xingyi city in such remote areas because so far china has built 1400 railroad and highway tunnels (not just thousands of bridges) in guizhou alone. the HSR from guizhou capital to guangzhou is about near 900km. more than half of this 900km are running inside of the tunnels. for the whole china, so far china has built 35000 tunnels. people see those fantastic bridges in china, but don't see tunnels but those tunnels are critical pieces for the infrastructure of today's china.

The most common issue for people who tries to speak Chinese for the first time is that they do not know what is considered as tone and what is not. So they will imitate whatever they heard and consider that the correct way to say it, despite some "tone" are from their teacher's own accent/dialect/habit or most commonly their attitude/emotion when saying that. Like you don't have to sound so angry/surprised/hyped (or other emotions) to speak Chinese, it's just your teacher's (waitress/janitor/worker/dancing grandma etc.) attitude/emotion when they are saying it.
