I'm Korean, and I live near that place. Let me explain.. this place is not actually a slum, and there are not much people who actually even live there. That is why it is so silent and clean. So what is this place? After Korean war, some people illegally settled down there. Land owners or government didn't look into them cuz it was a shit land by then. But when redevelopment started, this place became gold, because at that time Gangnam already became one of the most expensive place in Korea. Even though those people settled down illegally, Korea has a law that with years of living in certain place, nobody can just kick out the residents from the place. So during rapid redevelopment of Gangnam, rich people bought those houses there from wartime settlers thinking that place is going to get developed soon, like all other areas around the town. By the way when a place is redeveloped, as the residents has to leave the place, governments pay certain amount of money for them. So the home owners want the new going-to-built apartment for compensation while gov been trying to convince them for paying equivalent amount of money.(But everyone knows getting the apartment is much more beneficial) Deal has been stuck since then, so that is why the place is still look like it is in 60s If you wanna see the real slum, better find real ones.(Of course there are slums in every country, including Korea) But nah this one ain't.

Everything about the media constantly talks about this place being a "US Ally" with no problems and all about K-pop. This is the FIRST TIME i ever expected to know and understand that there is a "slum" in SEOUL, KOREA.

Mass media is biased. It always has been. Did you know there are also slums in Madrid, Paris, and Milan? The divide between developed and developing countries is non existent anymore. It’s all just media hype or cropping that determines which countries are “rich” from those who are “poor”. In reality, poverty stats and the wealth gap are consistent for most developing and developed countries, mostly hovering around 10-20% for all but the poorest countries.

My company is near that area. Because long-term residents receive almost the same compensation as owners. Not only the land owners but also the people who live there are extremely wealthy. Most of the local people do not live there. However, in order to maintain the title of long-term resident, the living environment is maintained. They visit periodically and stay there for a few days. Just take a look at the fact that a small apartment near that area costs at least $1.2 million. Development is not taking place for a long time due to the conflict between land owners, long-term residents, and Seoul Metropolitan Government.

2 things impressed me 1 the absolute silence. obviously it has to do with the culture of the people. anywhere else in the world, I think if you found such a small society, it would be noisy at least with the voices of small children. and 2 of the nice cars you saw parked around. a big contradiction with the state of the settlements where people live. in the past I tried to visit this village with google earth but there was no access to its streets.very very very good video

@@sawajiri100 It's not a defense, it's the truth. There is already a lot of coverage of this neighborhood on KZbin, but I haven't seen any channels that provide background. Everyone knows this place as the last slum in Seoul, but in fact, it is not that kind of place. This is a small corner land just below Gangnam, the most expensive land in Seoul, so there are complex redevelopment interests. So the landowners have been negotiating with the Seoul Metropolitan Government for over several decades, and the few real residents are staying to have their rights recognized. If the residents there are refugees, what are the cars and tax bills in front of their houses? lol

Actually, people live in this slumped area they are not poor people. They are waiting for fair redevelopment compensation from government. They have been disputed unfair government compensation over decades and they are refusing to accept government offer. Land market value is much higher than buying apartment this area. Purchase land in this area is limited most people cannot afford purchase properties in here.

Yep, this is what Korea looks like. Nobody mentions in their cute travel vlogs that literally 8ft behind a skyscraper is a home or community built out of sheets of metal. It’s everywhere, not just in seoul, it’s the entire country of korea. And when you get out of the larger cities and into rural areas, it’s all like this. But all you see online is the neon lights of gangnam. I will add that the type of people who live in these places are hard workers, usually farmers, restaurant workers, people who work with their hands.

Korean rural people are wealthier than most urban people. They just can't enjoy the amenities of big cities. The prices of agricultural and livestock products in Korea are among the highest in the world. That's why so many urban people want to move to rural areas. If you've been to any rural area in Korea, you wouldn't be able to write such a stupid comment.

The low wage earners live here. Every city in every country in the world has slums where low wage earners live because they work long hours at jobs that don’t pay them a decent wage so they can afford to live in safe, clean decent housing. This doesn't feel like a slum at all. Have you seen the slums in India? This village is cleaner than most of the cities in India. Negative criticisms aside, honestly, this is the kind of place I dream of living in-far away from the chaos of the city. The peaceful environment, the simplicity of life in this village, and the quiet surroundings make it so appealing. It's such a beautiful and serene spot; and also very clean in my opinion when you compare to the slums of other places. The city here is as peaceful as the village-no extreme loud noises, no constant honking, and no unnecessary disturbances. It's almost like a hidden paradise amidst the modern world. I'm absolutely in love with this part of the country. Thank you, Walking On, for sharing such a breathtaking view of South Korea. It opened my eyes to a whole new perspective, and I truly enjoyed it.

as a korean... i have learned this while websurfing. so in 1988, korean olympic started. however the korean government was so obssesed with making other country feel good about korea. so they crushed all the slums with bulldozer and than the people in there were lost. and this is where they are living now.
