I have only been to the S of L one time and that was around 1951 - 1952 when I was 6 or 7. The perspective is so different looking at it as an adult because I was a very short kid then and the walls around the stairs were close to my height as I remember. We could walk right up to the windows of the crown to look out and they had special booster boxes that kids could stand on so they were high enough to look out. Thanks so much for the excellent video.

I went to the Statue of Liberty in 1983, during a third grade class trip. I remember a girl in my class started to cry after taking her first few steps up the stairs; she got scared but was still able to turn around in time (she had just started up). I think our teacher might be to blame, though. Our teacher warned us before going up, saying something like, 'The stairs are very narrow and steep, and it's kind of dark. If you are scared, I need to know right now, because you won't be able to turn back'. Those words probably rattled that little girl. My friends and I thought the steps were fun. However, we didn't have much time to look out the windows in the crown; we had to keep moving once we reached the top.

The New Colossus BY EMMA LAZARUS Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. “Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

What always bothered me was how dimly lit the torch has always been, in the dedication, the sonnet suggests the light is restrained lightning, A beacon for the entire world to see. From when it was built until now, it has never been illuminated properly. In the darkness of night of a springtime storm, the brilliant flash of light from a bolt of lightning, will leave a lasting impression on you. The lame dull color of illumination from the torch has always left a lot to be imagined. With the improvements of technology, the torch could easily be converted to shine like a star even in daylight, and be quite memorable should it be seen at night.
