Making coffee is intended to provide young people with work experience and transferable skills that they can use in real jobs, jobs that are actual careers. If a person intends to spent the next 30-years working at Starbucks, he has no ambition and has thrown in the towel on life. You would have to work a certain amount of hours in a given period of time. The problem with that is that hours can easily be manipulated (cut in this case) on a mere whim. Even the benefits of insurance isn't guaranteed at that point either.
