Walks in Derbyshire: Exploring The Hermitage, Dale Abbey

Today I am up in Derbyshire in search of a hermit. Philip Naylor has agreed to show me the old hermitage in Dale Abbey, cut into the stand stone and tell me a little of the legend.
Dale Abbey is a village and civil parish in the borough of Erewash in Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England, 6 miles north east of Derby. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 1,351. Formerly known as Depedale or Deepdale, the village contains the remains of an abbey founded in the 12th or 13th century.

What an amazing semi-detached church! I looked it up and apparently the farm house was once a pub attached to the church and the priests used to change into their vestments there! Lovely to see a part of the country I don’t know very well!

Young Vobert, the high holes at circa 9:50 are holes for beams. There is a corresponding one on the wall opposite between the arches. The same arrangement is repeated next arch down. It would appear that at some stage the cave was sub-divided.

Sad to see how access to the cave has been diverted (formerly passing through the ancient farmyard) and sanitized , and many ancient trees have clearly been removed from beside the church and within the wood. Likely health and safety signs are now splattered all around? It's only a matter of time before the cave is fenced off / enclosed behind a plastic shield, with access barred. I was lucky to live very close to the cave ('White Cottage') for the duration of the 1950s and was likely one of the last to see the area as God intended. For that I am grateful. Having written that the monk may well have appreciated the steps and possibly even had some of his own, whilst possibly declaring the convoluted new access 'half baked.'

should have gone through Stanton village as well - loads of history - I think that church cum house is the place where Alan-a-Dale was supposed to have married. the arch of the abbey down below is all that is left after the disastrous depredations of Henry the eighth's Reformation. Ended all of the religious persecutions though, thankfully.

Dale Abbey-manor house obviously used to be the abbey. Village built from stones robbed from the abbey and dispossessed monks.
