This is another video in my series “ Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I take a walk in and around the pretty village of East Meon in the South Downs National Park - located about 4.5 miles West of Petersfield.
I park my car in the village car park (free parking) on the Western side of the village and start my 4 mile circular walk with a wander through East Meon itself.
It is such a beautiful village full of delightful thatched cottages & buildings with interesting history attached to them. I get to explore the All Saints Church which has a magnificent black “marble” baptismal font that originated from Belgium - one of only 4 such fonts in Hampshire.
My route then takes me North along the sides of fields towards Drayton Farm & Drayton Cottages at which point I head South, over the River Meon and along Halnaker Lane (a byway with woods on one side & open fields on the other).
After meeting up with the South Downs Way, I head East but instead of immediately heading back to East Meon, I take a detour to visit the source of the River Meon - one of the great chalk streams of Hampshire.
My final destination is Ye Old George Inn, back in the village, for some light refreshment.
A super walk in glorious Winter sunshine however I should point out that there were a couple of “muddy” sections -approaching Drayton Farm & along part of Halnaker Lane (not impassable though) - so it would probably be best attempted during the Summer months for maximum enjoyment!
