In this episode of my series “Walks in Wiltshire, I take a 5 mile circular walk (with a detour) from Great Wishford to Grovely Wood. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car in Great Wishford and after a quick look at the River Wylye (at Stoford Bridge to the East), I had a wander around the village. A visit to the church of St Giles (which has an 18th century fire engine inside!), I headed South passing by the old Almshouses, the school & the Royal Oak pub.
Before heading out into the countryside, I made a quick detour down Station Road to see Oak Apple Field. The village has an annual fete & celebration to commemorate the ancient rights of villagers to collect wood in the nearby forest. I left the village, heading West , uphill, along a bridleway towards Ebsbury Copse and continued until I reached a ridge and a section of the Monarch's Way. At this point, I made a detour to the West along an old Roman Road to find & then explore a WW2 bunker!
Retracing my steps, I then headed East - still along the old Roman Road, past an ancient earthwork known as Grim's Ditch until I came across the three Witches' trees! There were originally 4 of these amazing beech trees (one has blown over) & the legend / folk tale is that they have a connection with the murder of 4 sisters back in the 18th century (full details of the story in the video!).
My homeward leg took me along a bridleway back to the village.
