This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about the Pentatonic Scale. Technically, a Pentatonic Scale is any scale with 5 notes. However, when people use the term ‘Pentatonic scale’ they are generally referring to the Major Pentatonic Scale.
The Major Pentatonic Scale is a very consonant & pleasant sounding scale. Pentatonics are a good way of avoiding ‘Avoid Notes’ or ‘Unavailable Tensions’. And, just like any other pre-existing scale, you can create modes out of the Major Pentatonic Scale by starting and ending the scale on a different note (i.e. selecting a different root note).

Thanks you gave lovely insight of how to use the pentatonic scale with each particular chord , and also explaining that is an avoid note you are a good teacher . There are a lot of guys that can play very good , but when it comes to teaching it is a different kettle of fish

Hi. Is this why McCoy tyner and associates obsessively used pentatonics over modal harmony, esp. quartal harmony? Because it doesn’t have the tritone that strongly implies dominant - tonic cadence?

i think there is an error toward the end of the video - you have the F Maj Penta over C Melodic Min as FABDE, shouldn't it be FGACD? the E is definitely not in the C Melodic Minor. either way this is a great explanation, thanks.

how are you making modes of a major pentatonic scales i mean going diatonically the second mode of a c major pentatonic should be D E G A B C PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW DID YOU MADE IT A Bb major
@jcTorres813

Hi Samyak Jain, the second mode of C Major Pentatonic is D, E, G, A, C. If you transpose it to start from C as the root (for teaching purposes) then you get C, D, F, G, Bb :)

Thanks for the great video!! I have a question: is there any formulaic way to find out that the Bb major pentatonic scale can be used over Dm7b5 in the ii-V-I progression of C melodic minor? Thanks a lot!

I have the same doubt. I think that he used the diatonic mode from b6 degree. Because Bb is the flat sixth of D minor.

Also that Db Maj pent over G7b9 comes from diminished fifth of G7b9 and the F Maj pent over CmMaj7 comes from the Major Fourth of CmMaj7. None of them are stable chord-tones. The pentatonics should come from the first, the third, the fifth and the seventh of each chord.

The consonance isn't about the 5ths, it's because there are no half steps.

Correct, but that's really just two sides of the same coin. Five fifths stacked on top of one another by definition cannot be within a semitone of each other because of the way that we derive notes from frequency ratios. It's just a matter of semantics.
