I would have recommended staying in The Witchery By The Castle....FAR more luxurious than the Balmoral Tim :) I've stayed in both several times....and hands down, the Witchery (for me) is the best in Edinburgh. Has a fab restaurant too....you might want to take Gabby with you though! It's a romantic gothic hideaway....feels very exclusive. They have about a dozen suites (My favourite so far has been the Semple Suite) you choose when you're booking on the website.

This hotel shows how nice a place can be when management and staff care about the hotel and their guests. It's impressive because they get everything people care about right. The touches they focus on to make the room and stay feel welcome and inviting, the care for cleanliness and keeping things well maintained... it's refreshing to see a place that is quality all the way through, and not just if you don't look too closely. This is a hotel where paying for anything feels justified.

Very luxurious Scottish hospitality. Whilst I have visited Edinburgh a few times I have not unfortunately stayed at The Balmoral! I did note, of which I was not aware, that it is a Rocco Forte hotel. He now has a small number of luxury hotels. The only other one in the UK (having checked!) is Brown's in London. (Somewhere again I have only ever had lunch!) So, The Balmoral (with a pillow menu - a first for me to see one) in Scotland and The Dorchester in London, what more could you ask for?! Great to have been able to see inside another iconic hotel. Room rate based on two persons is, I feel, justified.

😬😬A 5 star luxury hotel should not be ‘advising’ their customers to tip the staff…never mind how much. That’s just tacky. Presumably the staff are already being paid a good wage, so why stoop to begging tourists to top up their pay? It’s not the USA where staff are paid peanuts and have to rely on tips to avoid being homeless!

A most enjoyable video as always. As a Scottish ex-pat, I’m delighted to see that we can still get some things right in the “Old Country”. FYI, if fish is baked under salt you’re not expected to eat the crust, it’s there for decoration, and what you ate as a side dish was purée, not mashed potatoes which is what we eat with haggis. It’s odd that a former Michelin-starred restaurant got the amount of salt wrong, could there have been cheese mixed in with the potatoes? Here in Italy they add Parmesan along with the milk and cream. Keep up the good work…

We visited Scottland in '98 just about 6 months after Princess Dianas death. We traveled all through Scottland, visited many of the castles. Made our way up to Inverness. Saw Dunrobin Castle and took a tour, also swung by Balmoral Castle where people were still leaving bouquets of flowers at the gate there for the late Princess. I was so impressed by the history saved, stored and on display throughout. Loved our journey through the beautiful countryside. The people of Scottland were warm, friendly and inviting. We did take a tour of Edinburg Castle. I was in charge of the 8 MM Sony video camera but when we got home it appears I forgot to take the lens cap off during my recording. Pretty bummed about that. lol Thanks for your wonderful videos. Safe travels friend.

You use the water at the end - to wash the residue of the whisky out - so you don’t miss a drop.

They will probably describe the music in the foyer as coming from a Clarsach rather than a harp. Far more relaxing than bagpipes! When my dad was a student in the 1970s, it (as the NB/North British Hotel) was still railway-owned. It was possible to access it from the station and use the bath/shower rooms (back then, some rooms were not ensuite).

I really liked this one Tim. Love the decor - - furniture, fabrics, books and colors. Cozy. The grand staircase and harp - - terrific. The castle next door, even better. This place ties with the Wynn in Vegas. Kudos.

Can you imagine staying here on Hogmany and seeing the firework display, over the nearby Edinburgh Castle?

In about 1985 I viewed and photographed the Hogmanay fireworks from the top of the clock tower. I’ve definitely lost my head for heights since then.

I love Edinburgh. My maternal GreatGrandfather came from outside Edinburgh and he ended up in Ireland! I still have cousins there as a lot of the family moved back. We must have a weaknesses for rainy weather! However, Scotland is beautiful. I would love to stay in the Balmoral. Thanks for showing it.

Love this video ❤ was excited to see this one after seeing your FB post. It's a shame Gabby and Casper didn't join you on this trip! Stayed here once before for my husband's birthday, it was the best hotel experience for us. Glad you had a good stay. You'll need to visit Scotland again soon 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃❤

As someone who has lived in and just outside of Edinburgh all my 40 odd years, I've always thought that whilst it would be a nice hotel, it would be a bit generic. Oh how i'm delighted to be wrong. It's stunning! Fantastic video, you have a new sub. BTW Edinburgh is immensely older than 1700 ;)

For me when staying in a designer boutique to a luxury hotel, I would make sure the property has a good lap pool and spa facility like a sauna and steam room.

But also that was the room the Queen Mother stayed in when she came to stay! Like the JK Rowling one she locked herself in there for 6 months to write i think the last book or one of then lasts ones.

When I was growing up in the 70’s my Grandmother really disliked her, apparently she pushed George to be King(so she would be Queen) and insisted in been called Queen Mother after his death to keep herself in public view.
