Every time I watch one of these Videos I wonder why these Hotels aren't bought by Investors who could turn them into 4/5 star Hotels. Why does Brittannia, which clearly aims to a budget traveller to an extent, why do they buy and hold these massive, heritage listed, former luxuary Hotels. What is their Plan, because some of these buildings will need major renovation and modernisation in the next years and I don't see how that makes financial sense for them. In germany for example many of the 19th century seaside architecture is now beautifully restored and upmarket holiday lets and Hotels. Honestly this flabbergasts me.

I was hoping you’d do the country house hotel in Manchester as well. However I’ve read they’re housing certain people and aren’t open to the public . Someone tried to film outside to prove it and was asked to leave by security . So I guess that one’s off the list. Which is a shame I was wanting to see if it was still semi decent

I like the entrance / atrium, the chandelier and the weird furniture. It's a bit like walking through an old antiques market / museum. It's all somewhat anachronistic. Look at the riff-raff walking around in their cheap trainers!!! It looks like it would once have been very majestic and prestigious but has fallen into decline. I don't think I would ever stay at any Britannia hotels / holiday parks. The ethics of that company are dreadful. I wonder how they treat their staff? I would rather stay at Premier Inn or Travelodge.

@@davidburrows4801 these sort of hotels will likely go bust in the coming months unless they've negotiated a good fixed energy deal. Massive buildings like this are extraordinarily expensive to run and maintain, so this is why they often end up run down unless they're already in a good state and are regularly frequented by rich visitors like some of the grander London hotels.

@@littlemy1773 I expect they were fabulous fifty years or so ago, but the reality is that unless you have a hotel like this in central London frequented by the rich and famous you just aren't going to have the money to keep it to a high standard. Even Premier Inn wouldn't buy it, as they know that it's just not worth working with buildings that are deteriorating. This hotel will continue to be patched up and to exist until it's unsustainable, then it will probably sit and rot until a developer takes interest in either the building or the site. I've heard that the Adelphi in Liverpool is also a bit of a dive now.

I worked for the Britannia Group as an apprentice electrician from 1985-1990. I first worked on the transformation of Sachas Hotel then when that finished I was moved over to The Britannia Hotel as a maintenance electrician. One of my duties was to walk the entire hotel in the morning to check for any bulbs out, so it's nice to see that someone is still on top of that. I used to hate changing bulbs in that huge chandelier. There used to be a concierge at reception and a doorman in top hat and tails. The head housekeeper would never have let old furniture be left out on the landing, she used to walk around like a dictator making sure the place was spotless. Great times.

We often stayed for champagne weekends in the 1980s. Our split floor suite was often in the round window suites at the top. It was great back then. I stayed in the mid-90s, and it was fine. We visited again in the early 00's , and it was then that we noticed a serious decline. You're right, the stairwells are astounding. Thanks for showing this old beauty again.

When I studied at Uni in the 90’s the Britannia Hotel was part of our course on Design History. The building was originally constructed as a showroom for Manchester in its heyday when it was nicknamed Cottonopolis. If you look at the frontage the first floor windows are the most elaborate. These were the display halls were the various fabrics made in the local factories were laid out for the buyers. That lobby looks like part of the original structure. Look at the light flooding in. I wonder if those fabulous chandeliers are original too? I remember going into the lobby back in the nineties and it was a lot darker then. The all white and gold interior does look amazing. So the bare bones of the original building are still in place. Even some of the odd furniture looks original. What a shame such a magnificent building has been reduced to such a hideous hotel.

I have stayed in this very hotel multiple times over the years and honestly for the price I think its pretty good! For a single room its £30 a night and is smack bang in the middle of Manchester city centre. For quick overnight trips to the city it has been a bit of a lifer saver ,saving me a lot of money. Yes the rooms aren't anything special and there are signs of aging and wear & tear across the hotel, however I have personally never had any bad experiences with my rooms. Always clean and have everything I need. For the price and the location personally its my go to choice!

Can you just imagine how beautiful that hotel was in it's prime. As a construction engineer I am fascinated by the design and iron works that had men with skills lost to time working thousands of hours to complete. The brass fittings and joinery are of such quality it breaks my heart to know that when the hotel is modernised they will be ripped out and skipped ( where me and others will fight over to reclaim them 😇). I am so judgemental when we stay at hotels, but I look at that old beauty and dread to think of the running costs and upkeep of it, so fully appreciate the cost cutting that is slowly adding to it's death as a classic building. The 21st century will catch up to it sooner or later and rip it's heart out 🥺.

@@excession3076 I understand what your implying, but the reality of refurbishment works that involve grade 2 listed buildings is far far removed from the understanding you have. Investors will not incur endless costs because some iron works or covings are from a particular era or factory, and local authority's understand this and become quite flexible if it means the loss of investment in the local area. You may cite certain organisations who are guardian's of our heritage, but rest assured with enough brown envelopes and pressure they drop their morals quicker that a thai hooker will drop her drawers. I recently watched Dolphin Square in London be transformed from a oak clad brass encased art deco fitment rich marvel of British ingenuity turned into a cheap travel lodge looking monstrosity. The are 32 MP's living in Dolphin Square. Not one of them could do a thing to stop the modern refurbishment.

After watching many of your videos about the worst hotels you can definitely see a pattern emerging. A former Grand Hotel that no longer can afford the staff to keep it up to its once-great standard. It's a shame that these buildings are falling apart due to neglect. But what is the alternative? If another hotel chain took it over and did the proper maintenance and hired the staff to keep it up the prices would probably triple at least.

I've stayed and worked at the Brit some years ago. The stay was for my wedding night where I had booked the Four Poster room but on arrival was given an upgrade to the Royal Suite. The suite was really nice and couldn't be faulted. The only negative was it took quite a while for our luggage to be located, which I had dropped off the previous day. During my time working there I hated every day for the few weeks I was there. To reach the staff entrance at the back of the hotel, I had to walk along a back alley which was OK in the day, but at night wasn't the best place to be. The hotel does look much, much better than during my time there when it wasn't the nicest place.

First priority for the hotel should be upgrading the door security to a card system where you have to use the card to use the lift. The cost can be evened out by floor to floor over time. If I choose to stay there, i would use a plastic wedge for the door for peace of mind during my stay.

I always find the furniture in the middle of the corridors in Britannia hotels so funny - it's like they keep spares floating about and make decor pieces of them. That main atrium - wow!

Stayed at that hotel a couple of times, it was as expected and the bar staff were very friendly. If you just need a place to get your head down it's fine, but there are better hotels in the area. As for the stairs, I will walk instead of taking the lift just because it does look awesome and I need the exercise..

I stayed here in 2018 while on a work conference - it gave me AHS vibes and even them I did notice the chandeliers were begging for a clean. My room was lovely and clean however I had a very creepy experience, when coming back after dinner I went to my floor and could hear a lot of noise, multiple people talking excitedly and laughing however as soon as I opened the door to the corridor I was sleeping on (my room was the last one) everything went eerily silent which really freaked me out. I slept with the bathroom light on all night 🙈

The hotel has great architecture both outside and inside, but it looks like it wants sprucing up quite a bit, and where some of the furniture requires replacement. I've seen this building many times in the past, and that room you were staying in with the circular window, I always thought that those were like in a loft and were storage rooms. The view from the top of the stairs is very impressive, looking down, and with the chandelier, too. It must have been dreadful in that top room in the heat, and with no air conditioning, either. A good video, Tim.

I've stayed there a couple of times, the last was in 2018. Whilst it's not the best hotel and furnishings are a bit dated and could use updating or a good clean the one main thing ive always taken from this place is that the floors (mainly in reception) are very spongy when walking on them, almost like the floorboards have rotted away underneath. When I was there last I was placed in the 6th floor which you have to access via a very narrow staircase at the end of the 5th floor, which you walked past at 4:02 those rooms have the full circular turret windows and suprisingly my room had a double bed even though they are single rooms.

I stopped here a few years ago as part of a coach trip package. I was really impressed with the entrance and the bar area was very posh. It had a nightclub next door which was a bonus as well. Only cost me £69 for the 2 day coach trip, 1 night stop and dinner included and I live 200 miles away, Bargain 😁😁

The Britannia Hotel was developed in the early 80's in what had been the S&J Watts warehouse, it had a gold and blue decor that was spectacular, it was the hotel of choice for all the actors, bands and artists visiting Manchester at the time, it's sad to see the awful decor and lack of care but that is now the hallmark of Britannia Hotels.

Wow, beautiful hotel, love all the antiques! I would love to see you stay in a bigger suite! It was quite small & stuffy. Do any of the larger rooms have a window or room or 14:38 overhead air conditioning? Sad to see so many negative reviews of such a beautiful hotel. Once they replace that carpet throughout, they will be good to go!

I used to stay there several times a year (last time about 8 years ago, though). I loved the building (especially that central staircase area & the location - easy walk to the station, at the centre of everything, & really close to Chinatown. It was reasonably priced too. The rooms could be hit & miss, but all were OK except for the attic room (one of those up the stairs from the one you stayed in). It was TINY. Hardly room for my hand luggage to fit between the bed & the wardrobe. It did have some natural light though. Definitely never a hint of bed bugs! I also never actually ate there - I usually went out for Chinese.

I worked right near the Britannia for many years on Charlotte St and never did go in. The grand atrium is quite spectacular considering it was built as a warehouse. The building is ripe for a sympathetic makeover. We stayed in the Principal hotel York and that was quite grand too and very nicely done. Hopefully a chain like them will acquire it at some point. It does look like they are currently woefully underfunded and trying to make the most of it. Such a shame, its a lovely building.
