I stay in the Scarisbrick Hotel, Southport owned by Britannia Hotels and it's the Tenth consecutive year that Britannia has come bottom of the pile in the annual survey by consumer group Which?

I'm from Southport and for years the Scarisbrick was regarded as one of the best in town. It was family owned and they took great pride in the place. I got married there in 2010 and everything was fantastic. We couldn't fault a thing. (By the way, the Churchtown Suite was the bridal suite 😁). Sadly the owner, Tony Cafferkey, had passed away the previous year and his family just wanted shot of the place. All was well until around 2011 when they sold it to Britannia Hotels. Unfortunately, the Scarisbrick (pronounced Scares-brick) underwent a huge decline, as do most hotels owned by Britannia. It's now a shadow of its former self and poor Mr Cafferkey must be turning in his grave.

Good as I thought and remembered. I was confused because it had a good reputation, it was supposed to be real good and there was always a wedding on. I know that 30 years ago Maloneys was heaving with revellers you could barely move. No one in Southport missed it off their crawl. That company you mention do all the deals with run down hotels. Went in Prince of Wales recently but not in a room. It didnt look much better. It looked in dire need of some upkeep too. Funny I never ever drank in there.

This room is small but has everything you need. Like: - Cobwebs - Light fittings without lights - A door that's clearly been opened with a crowbar - Electrical hazards - Bath with built in bum scratcher - Fresh air whether you want it or not Sounds like a solid deal to me

I'm stunned because I was in that hotel in the 90's and the celebrities used to stay there. It was an amazing hotel furnished to a very high standard and it was spotlessly clean. They had 24 hour roomservice and a fantastic full English breakfast with black pudding, hashbrowns, fried bread , tomatoes, beans, fried egg, bacon and sausages and there was no room on the plate. The woman who owned it must've retired and sold up because this is definitely not like it was 25 years ago. The car park was at the back of the hotel and it was underground and there was large gates at the back of the car park. Put it this way the radio 1 roadshow was on and all of the acts stayed at the Scarisbrick. Intact it was so good I always said if I stayed in Southport I'd stay at the Scarisbrick. I'm very disappointed.

It was ran by a gentleman called Tony Cafferkey who was the MD. The hotel was his pride and joy, and his standards of excellence were unrivalled. Back when I was growing up, the scarisbrick was the pride and joy of the town. Sadly Mr Cafferkey passed away from cancer in 2009 and the hotel was unfortunately sold to the Britannia group. The demise and deterioration of the hotel has been drastic and sad to see. Britannia group own the Prince of Wales hotel also in Southport, which is a beautiful building with a once impeccable reputation, unfortunately it too has been left to rack and ruin. Southport MP Damien Moore has written to Britannia group asking them to pump some much needed funds into the two sites or to sell up. As yet, I believe there has been no response.

This one makes me so sad. We spent my mums last holiday here when she was dying of cancer in 1995. It was such a beautiful hotel. I am so sorry its been let into disrepair.

One thing though Rob, it's a red tag earth clamp, so suitable for dry condintions only, which is evidenced by the ongoing corrosion process. Should be replaced with external blue asap, unless they've upgraded the consumer unit with RCDs/RCBOs for all circuits within the area and just left it there.

All these Victorian & Georgian hotels show the previous grandeur but the big issue I see is the cost of upkeep, which has become too much for the owners/operators. The same issue happens to stately homes which then fall into disrepair. These hotels are so interesting. For me a clean bed is the most important thing. Always interesting videos though.

I don't see how you can conclude that the cost of upkeep is the reason - why is it now but not previously? I think it's purely down to the business model of the owners. They wouldn't be operating if they didn't know what they were doing.

@@basylpeterjones I believe that the ingress of dampness due to the building's age is a major issue in these old hotels. The cost to rectify it is prohibitive due to the smaller revenues as the hotel ages. I maybe wrong but I'm glad it brings conversation to the issue.

When you see the Britannia Hotels logo you know you’re in for a rough time. Chains like Premier Inn and even Wetherspoons have been really good at modernising these grand hotels while keeping that retro opulence that gives them their character. Britannia just don’t care.

Personally if I'm going somewhere for the weekend I like to stay one night in the local Britannia Hotel as it is normally a beautiful old building and I can feel like I'm stepping back into a lost world. That being said I spend the second night somewhere that's actually comfortable.

My daughter worked on room service at a hotel during here student days, she told me that every horizontal surface in every room has had a used condom on it sometime or other. I have a ritual of cleaning all touchable surfaces with antiseptic wipes in any room I stay. That wire on the towel rail was perfectly safe, it's an earth bond, complies with the regulations.

I noticed that the curtains in your room were actually covering the headboard, makes me wonder if there was a different bed in there before because that's just weird. I was nervous that the window handle was going to fall off when you pushed the window open, couldn't believe how loose it was. You were brave to get into that lift, I wouldn't have trusted it to let me out again!

It was much grander than this 30 plus years ago when I stayed. They used to park your car for you, the staff wore the correct attire, unlike the guy on reception and the tables had table cloths on. Our room was really lovely. You can tell its gone down hill. Shame!

The ‘Brick’ used to be a fantastic hotel which has sadly been absolutely neglected by its owners - Britannia Hotels. Sadly they have also been allowed to purchase two other historic hotels in Southport - which have also been neglected. It’s hard for old seaside towns to get tourists now, with shops struggling etc, but this is not helped by incompetent ownership - Britannia hotels, ruining hotels all over the country.

@@buzx1313, I spent many a Saturday night in 'The 'Brick' when I used to frequent Southport town centre in my youth. Used to go downstairs to the Odyssey bar, which was closed down and changed into the closed down leisure club in this video. Heck I'm old enough to remember when it used to be Chicago's bar in the 1980's, and what is now Maloney's Bar used to be filled with pool tables.

I got my first job in this hotel in the early 80's, back then it was really beautiful and glamourous place, the family that ran the hotel were brilliant they really cared for the staff, working there was fun a real family atmosphere. Sad to see it so run down.

Not an electrician, but the wire coming from the radiator looks like it is just an earth bonding wire that grounds the metal surface of the radiator, should it in any case ever make contact with a live wire. It's quite common, but usually at least neatly tucked away, sometimes behind the wall.

@@WalkWithMeTim Yeah, it's just connected to the ground, to make sure that if somehow anything electric was to make a connection to the radiator, or the pipework behind it, the electricity would just be sent through that wire into the ground (path of least resistance), rather than through someone's body that could touch it, into the ground (path of least resistance if the wire wasn't there). Kind of a precaution, considering bathrooms are areas where water and electricity can come close.

I was an electrician years ago and this equipotential bonding was quite common, yes it should be a lot neater but there is nothing dangerous about it as it is, it just looks terrible. It used to be a PIA having to run supplementary heavy earth cables to all metal pipework, bath tubs AND light fittings etc... in a bathroom, of course many firms just didn't bother. I'd left by the time the 18th Edition I think (might have been 17th 2nd?) of the wiring regulations removed the requirement providing all circuits serving the room had RCD or RCBO protection. In any case if a house or business property had from new or has fitted mainly plastic pipes, there is then no reason to bond pipes at all.

@@WalkWithMeTim Yes. Its purpose is to ground any electricity that might possibly get on/into the radiator. It's like how your gas meter at home is bonded to ground, as are your copper water pipes. It provides an escape path for the electricty. Without it any electricity would instead use YOU to travel to ground when you touched the pipe, in which case your worries about the drafty window would be over! It's like how a lightning rod running down from a church would take to ground a bolt of lightning that struck the church spire - it gives the electricity somewhere to escape.

What a shame. I stayed there in the 1990’s and it was beautiful, classy and spotless. The staff were so lovely. The pool was stunning and also spotless. As soon as I read Britannia my heart sank. Terrible. Such a shame. The food in the restaurant was amazing. Some of the best meals I had ever had. This video is heartbreaking. The original owners/family must be mortified and so angry about the downturn.

Me and my partner and our dog stayed in the Tarleton suite on the top floor! It was actually an okay room. We had a double bedroom, seprate bathroom and a separate living room area. The bathroom was very clean but the rest very dated

Will def be interesting. I did one night here about 4 years ago and it was ok-ish. I think Prince of Wales hotel on Lord Street in Southport needs a visit, Tim. I asked to see a room before booking and was taken via service lift...ladders, paint pots and kitchen area all fully accessible in the way up-stopped at every floor. This was hotel manager taking us btw. It was a sess pit. Filthy. That was the room. God knows what other rooms are like if he thought that was going to make a sale!

I stayed at this hotel about 10 years ago. I remember that the springs were sticking right through my mattress and we had to take a numbered ticket for our turn in the breakfast room. We waited 45 minutes to go in. I had previously been to a meeting at the hotel around 25 years ago (pre-Britannia) and it was a good hotel in those days.

I have a theory about some of the larger pieces of furniture. I would speculate that these were once part of a larger suite.When these suites' were partitioned up into standard rooms the grand furniture was hauled to the landings and left there. Perhaps because they're too heavy to get down the stairs in one piece and disassembling them would require a skilled carpenter or furniture maker. The main reason therefore is cost.

The Scarisbrick, locally pronounced as Scaysbrick, has been shut for the past couple of weeks. Apparently its being refurbished and should be open in February. I'm wondering if this vlog had anything to do with this because there were reservations in place for January. Anyone arriving at the hotel gets redirected to the Prince of Wales just up the road. Britannia own a few hotels in the Southport area plus Stalag Pontins which you've already had the pleasure of.

Top Tip! My son lives in New Zealand so from the UK it is a lot of travelling for me and staying in different places. I ALWAYS pack a Turkish towel. No matter where I stay I always lay it over my pillows for hygiene and it is also good for putting over your shoulders if the evenings get cooler and you can also use it as an actual towel and it dries really quick and also a beach towel!

I stayed there once, work booked it for me for a course years ago. My room had no windows, just a sky light which was very random and they weren't doing breakfast, I was offered breakfast at a hotel up the road at another hotel but opted for the Sainsbury's down the road. It was fine for what it was but wouldn't choose to stay there again

As a Southport resident I've spent many a good night in the Scarisbrick's bars, though they're not as busy as they were 10 years ago. Good to see round the rest of the hotel as I've never needed to stay in it. Shame it looks so tired. I've just found out from an old Southport promotional video from 1985 that the Scarisbrick was built in 1821 and later in 1845 had horse drawn carriage to Ormskirk so people could catch the train. I didn't realise it was that old!

I am really enjoying the best & worst hotels. I keep hoping you will do the Blackpool Metropole, which we renamed the Metrohole after spending a night there. They might even give you a room on the lower ground floor, aka sprout corridor due to the stench 😝

This place is certainly not on my bucket list to stay overnight. I agree with you about the bed right next to a cold draughty window like that. The whole place has a creepy vibe to it especially that rotten lift. Not one for me but Southport is blessed with the second longest pier in the UK after Southend. Nice vlog nevertheless 😉👍

Thanks for doing this one. I felt a bit sad watching this as I stayed there a few times when I was younger over the years in the 80s. I stayed once over Christmas and New Year and it was fabulous. As a college student we used to go to the Knights Bar and the atmosphere was great. Stayed in rooms 301 and immediately surrounding rooms so got to see a few of them and they were a world away from this even though I think it was a 3 star. Incidentally, the lifts were different back then but got stuck in them a couple of times even then haha. The Derby room back then was all more formal dining room for evening meals. There was another dining room for breakfast and high teas which I can’t recall the name of. There were cloths on the tables, it was spotlessly clean and the staff were dressed more formally yet weren’t stuffy. They made you feel part of the family and we had some great times there. Very sad to see its deterioration really.

Shame, we used to go there for conference regularly around 10 years plus ago. It used to be at least 'Adequate' back then and I think we used to park around the back? The beds were comfortable, the food was reasonable and the 'Barons Bar' was actually good. It was OK back then but not the worst, that was the Britannia in Wolverhampton. Now that really was dreadful. Just looked and it's also owed by Britannia group, need I say more?

The original lift was the type with manual doors and a sliding gate.. someone did fall down the shaft from the first floor, apparently drunk opened the outer doors and stepped in but no lift was there...they survived.. the 4th floor off memory was staff bedrooms..

Stayed here for a couple of nights last March, shabby but room was spotless, night club was closed so it was quiet. Food OK but loved the free tea/coffee station outside the restaurant, it became a meeting point. Booked to come again for a couple of nights to a tribute weekend with a few friends this March, but have noticed it's closed for a re furbished, so do t know where we will be staying. Had to come back for a second visit, because we couldn't belive it the first time, bit like faulty towers. Lovebit.

I was unfortunate enough to have to stay at this hotel probably 6 or 7 years ago, when I worked as a tour driver for National Holidays, it was a Saturday night, and the passengers I had were on a weekend theatre show tour, having returned to the hotel late on the Saturday, I discovered that downstairs the bar / nightclub was playing loud music with loud bass, that reverberated up into the rooms, and it wasn't until after 4am before I managed to get any sleep, before having to be back up at 7am, and drive the coach. The company were made aware of this problem, by myself and majority of the passengers, but I would NEVER stay at that hotel again!

😂 I used to go in malpneys every night, it used to get absolutely packed. We would all go use the toilets up the hotel stairs 😂. Used the toilet in the wedding suit once, from what I remember that room wasn't as bad as the room you stayed in.

I won a competition 30 years ago and the prize was a weekend at the Scarisbrick. I was introduced to Mrs C the owner and the whole place was gorgeous - I had a wonderful time. So sad to see it in such a sad state 😢

Southport is lovely, use to go every sunday with my nan and grandad as a kid, there are some lovely hotels in southport but i remember my dad telling me he and my mum went to the scarisbrick hotel and they ate there and got sick

That window is amazingly dangerous. If you have a small child (or drink charged party goer still in party mode) in that room jumping on the bed and the fall or lean against that thing, they're going for unwanted journey to outside be it a fall to the fall or roof of the building bellow. The Prince is also owned by Britannia now, as is the Royal Clifton I worked in the brick on the bars a few years ago. There was a joke between staff... if anyone said it was a shithole we'd say 'yeah, but it's OUR shithole' It was actually goof fun on the bars. Good staff who did what they could with the little amount they were given

What a great review, I live not far from the hotel, originally owned by a family who knew how to run hotels, and it was the place to be seen. The second bar you went in to was the highlight of my Saturday night, it was jam packed, so how sad to see just 2 people in there. The hotel was sold to the Brittania group... need say no more about them and not so long ago the hotel was full of asylum seekers. Its so sad to see, but yes, a great review 👍

In the 1970s there used to be a bar with a couple of pool tables on one side of the hotel that was open to the public. I don't know if it was accessible from the hotel itself as I never had the pleasure of staying there. The bar was accessed from the lane which runs up the left side of the hotel. There was also a disco / dance floor down a further flight of stairs from said bar, so they may have been reconfigured into what you saw as that absolutely appalling-looking bar with the green telephone box. I seem to remember that back then the hotel did not have a good reputation, but I never stayed there, only worked opposite one summer. You could have complained about the window or asked for a discount on the price (did you say how much you paid?), but it's an absolute cheek to expect someone to stay in a room with a window that won't open and a dodgy door.

One tip I learnt from my experiences working in hotels and travelling is bring a door stop when travelling, cheap and will help secure doors for a little longer. Seen hotel rooms and apartments getting broken into more than is reported. I love staying in older hotels that have a history but when these grand hotels that had such success decline to where no one wants to stay!
