Making a nice looking tool cabinet tool chest for my babies (hand tools), cause hand tools deserve better than just something thrown together!
I went full send with this cabinet, I don’t like the stuffy looking cabinets so I added my own little touches along the way with some dovetails/lap and through cut by hand.

What a fantastic build! Well done ! I made mine with storage on the exterior of the front as well. I recessed magnetic strips so that I have infinite possibilities and several more square feet of hand tool storage as well as nothing clanking around when opening and closing.I have my most commonly used tools on the front. I can't afford to waste any wall space in my tiny shop.

Thank you, the whole idea was kinda on the same point as my shop tour and using drawers - I really hate having to clean up tools that are kinda out in the open as it were to the workshop and getting covered in dust. I did used to have walls of tools and was such a pain in the arse to clean. So I made this so I can close the doors, and guess what, I never close the doors! C'est la vie 😄

@HewAndAwe
@HewAndAwe Жыл бұрын
Thank you Nico, I did consider different ideas, with the toggle latches if they were underneath gravity would make them a two handed affair to close them how they are now is kind one fluid motion closing them. The other reason for the toggle latches is the amount of weight in those doors. Remember though it’s your own cabinet you’re making and you can make it how you like 😊

Ben, I have to laugh, I'm watching this video again and specifically for your panel dadoed dovetail end to the case frame or body. I'm close to finishing up two projects here and will begin my own (long-awaited) wall hung tool cabinet for my little garage woodworking shop and I'm going to include this method of jointing my intermediate panels both vertical and horizontal with this type of dado joint of yours design. But as I said I had to laugh because it just occurred to me why you had to cancel your subscription to that source of music you used. YOU SPENT ALL YOUR CASH ON FESTOOL Equipment!!! lol lol lol lol lol. The shop I worked for in France for over 12 years we had all kinds of Festool power tools and back then I didn't know how prestigious Festool was because we never knew the cost of them the company just gave them to us to use. But to this day I still can't stand the Festool drill motor and screw-guns. They are WAY TOO HEAVY. Still, this video has got to be the best Tool Cab video out there. Chow buddy

I got really fed up with constantly having to aline tools, re-set them every cut, I had some propper shite tools to start with - we all did. If a tool can help make things happen faster and not have the worry/cost of it being out i'm all for it, Covid has really taken it's toll too, I'm not sure what the future holds for me and what I like doing, good tools or not they were about before things went covid buddy. I hope you don't mind me saying this but of all your videos this one is the one I have seen (like I am now) over and over again and again. I love watching you work while all the time knowing that this woodworking is not your day job and yet you are so good at it. I am finally starting my own Wall Hung Tool Cabinet some 6 years in the waiting and I'm going to use one of your joinery methods the butt-end dovetail Dado but mine will both be the proper length. lol lol lol lol. I have to say that the most pleasing part of your videos is the GREAT MUSIC. and of course, your skill at day job of commercial video and music talents show up big time in your shop videos. I still can't find the good music but I'm still looking for it, royalty-free of course.
@HewAndAwe
@HewAndAwe 2 жыл бұрын
I think I'll take that as a complement LOL Is actually my day job bud, the reason I ddint use a full DT housing joint is cause it binds so much, more so when you add glue - its one of those very temperamental joints shall we say. I used the best of both worlds for looks as well as ease and strength. Theres losts of sites you have to sub to for music, youtube have free royalty free music but its pretty crap! Its a bit more complicated music to when it comes to editing, you need to be able to download all stems to make a good edit.

For the hand planes, strips of oak ripped on the table saw then the thicknesser to final dimensions 👍

PUT A GUARD ON THAT JOINTER/ PLANER!!!!
@HewAndAwe
@HewAndAwe 3 жыл бұрын
NO! 😂 There's good reasons why its not on there, mainly the design type and size would cause me more issues if something did happen getting to the emergency off button in my small workshop.

@@HewAndAwe its an axminster planer is it not, the guards are small in comparison and surely if you have a guard your less likely to need an emergency stop as there is no way you can get your fingers in with the blade, take it from me who has had their fingertips removed by a planer, it bloody hurt

Yes and it’s the 12” planer. I appreciate your concern, and boy do I know what that feels like! I’ve had three fingers sewn back on some twenty years ago - the docs said the pain was the equivalent to giving birth. 3 ops, Six months of physio/rehab and I can still bash the bishop but can’t flip anyone the middle finger cause I can’t move the ends of my fingers. So I don’t take this decision lightly bud. With that guard on in the size of my shop I wouldn’t be able to get out of the workshop with out doing a full lap of the shop cause it’s damn long, with the guard on makes the whole machine near 1,2m wide, if it were the pork chop design it would be on!

Wow, amazing work! And the video is excellent.... but think it might be even better without the music soundtrack which takes away from enjoyment of just watching you working listening to the sounds in the shop. Unlike the other commenter, not suggesting that you speak at all... simply let us hear the sounds of the tools and the work you're doing without the music. There's so much going on in the visuals and with your excellent editing, it wouldn't be at all boring. Hey, it's just one guy's opinion but take a look at another channel, Hand Tool Rescue, to see what I mean. Maybe try posting one of your videos with the music soundtrack and the same video without and ask for comments which people like better. Good luck.

Thank you Ol, music is an issue, some like some dont, but then what do you do when you forget to turn the sound recorder on, or the gain turned itself down in my camera equipment bag 🤦🏻‍♂️ The end music was just a bit of fun 70's porn music, kinda worked for what was being shown I thought.

Sorry for the late reply, I’ve been giving what you’ve said some proper thought... but I keep coming to the same thought, what’s been shown visually is that not enough information as it is, do people really need it spelling out for them? What is it more you’d actually like to hear me say? I’m not trying to be rude or anything don’t get me wrong - just trying to understand what’s on your mind. 👍

Different styles suit different peeps. I can't stand non-stop talking. Ugh. Music not my choice but not bad. There's always the volume button and your helpful captions...of course/coarse ;) I want to make one of these. Thanks for taking the time and sharing it.
