Two things, at the risk of seeming like the biggest nerd alive 1. The plotline from Heroes to Shadow 05 where there's the big shadow Android reveal and then they're like nevermind at the end of Shadow 05 pretty neatly fits the 'identity fakout' question. 2. In the IDW comics, which have been confirmed to be the same Canon as the games, Eggman gets his memory erased after Forces and becomes the kindly Mr Tinker before being brainwashed into his old personality and infecting the entire planet except for Silver into liquid metal zombies, which pretty exactly fits the last question

Numerous times in the games and in Sonic X Eggman has pretended to be reformed only to be doing some *wild* plot behind the scenes. For the "character almost dies but it gets brushed off" I said Sonic lore, but I was thinking more about that point in Sonic Boom, _the game,_ where it starts with Sonic getting executed via firing squad at some point in the future, and then when the story catches up to that point it turns out he was fine all along Edit: In Team Sonic Racing, there's a character named Dodonpa who's supposed to be this shady character who comments stuff like "yes let's see who survives this race", but in the end it turns out he secretly was just the owner of like a car parts company, so technically, he was a character who wasn't who we thought he was, but it was a ruse...

actually that's not the plot of sonic adventure. eggman doesn't collect the full 7 chaos emeralds, he only collects 6, it's chaos himself steals the full 7 off of knuckles in the final story, and only then does a city get destroyed, which was likely way way more expensive than that.

Calling the god of distruction a pet is inaccurate. Also Perfect Chaos wiped out an entire major metropolitan area, which is much more than hundreds.
