Awesome and spooky video. The wind going through the demolished steel and rubble made some type of wierd music. Glad you got to go back one more time and, even more, preserve the history. I spent many a time there as a kid when it was Hill's. I believe before it was Hill's it was either Grant's or Kresge's. Northern Lights was once a great shopping center.

New subbie, binge watching your videos tonight. I think it's cool to see younger people get nostalgic over Hill's and Ames. I was a young married woman in my early twenties when Ohio got those stores and I loved them both. But being 50-something now, I get nostalgic over IGA, Super Duper, Gold Circle, Rink's stores and like that. 60's and 70's shops and malls. If I could pass on some wisdom to younger folks like you, I would say hang onto those old store memories for all they're worth; there'll come a time when only a few will remember them.

My town used to have an Ames and they closed and it is not abandoned. The building has a Dunham's, Dollar General, and an Alternative School. Kroger rebuilt in 2001 and they took out part of the Ames to make the store bigger. Now added to the abandoned buildings is now a Bob Evans that closed a few days ago.

I hate to see another abandoned store and them tearing it down. But it’s better for them to tear it down instead of building a million new things I guess. But it’s good that you and other people are trying to preserve history because eventually it won’t even be a thing!

A store that has a presence in upstate New York and New England called Ocean State Job Lot (it's a close out kind of store, honestly it's a lower end Big Lots) uses (at least the one closest to me, unsure of other locations and I cannot remember how the ones I went to in Connecticut when my grandmother lived there looked) those Ames check out counters- the little "A+ Service" signs are even still in tact. A lot of Ocean State job Lots often occupy former spaces, I'm sure some are former Ames. My local one used to be a Grand Union supermarket

I actually learned how to drive in that parking lot before the Walm over there opened. Hard to believe that was 4 years ago. Not that 4 years is a long time, but I am only 20. Northern Lights has been dead for a long, long time, even when I was a kid, although Napoli Pizza there is still great.

i remember there was two Ames in Butler one in Butler Mall which was Murphy's Mart before that. and Montgomery Ward the other end. when they closed the mall was dead then half the mall got tore out as Wards got demolished ans its now Target. and its now Butler Commons which is now a very busy area now. the other Ames was in Clearview mall before that it was Hills. they closed and one half today is a sporting goods store and TJ Maxx not connected to the mall as that mall could be dying too with empty spaces.

Agreed. I felt sad filming it. However with the state most of the property is in, it needed to come down. Still, I was pretty sad to be inside Ames for the last time. That was the first real exploration of an abandoned store I ever had. Being able to get inside on that first visit and video is what really excited me about urban exploration.... that is besides the abandoned PA Turnpike tunnels I filmed back in 2013.

Watching these Ames videos makes me start to think that the Ames building in my town was the only one that the building was repurposed 🤔

The Ames just outside my hometown was vacant from 2002 to like 2016ish, tractor supply moved into a part of it after that and about a year after that a dollar tree took up most of the rest of it. There is a small section that is for lease now. It was built as a stand-alone building in 1987 and a Giant Eagle was built beside it with a few small shops connecting the two making it a small plaza in late 1988. The plaza enjoyed full occupancy (three businesses altogether) for most of its run and is doing well now. The second closest Ames to me was barely vacant at all. Half of it almost immediately became a Save A Lot Grovery store, then a tobacco shop, and the main part became a big lots and the plaza it’s in is also fully occupied the last time I was there.

Barry Lee There's a few ideas floating around of what may move in there. One was a park, another was Sam's Club (I severely doubt that one), rebuilding for new stores to move into. But like I said, those are just some of the ideas I've heard.

You could ask people who are tearing down the Hill/Ames building to let you keep the Ames sign inside Hills/Ames building but I'm not sure if they let you keep it but it doesn't hurt to try though.

The shape of things to come⚠In the quickly emerging age of Amazon and Wal-Mart's recent purchase of Jet.com you'll be seeing much more of this.However online shopping can't be fully blamed for this.Retail spaces~restaurants have been overbuilt since the 80s.Frankly I feel these long empty spots being pulled down is good even if the land goes back to being a cornfield🌽@ least its productive again.Besides most of the rubble is going to be recycled to @ least help in recovery of some of the expenses of clearing this mess the bankrupt companies left behind for us to deal with and I'm just fine with that.As David Bowie sang🎼Cha~Cha~Cha~Cha~Changes🎶BTW:All that steel will wind up in an electric furnace to be melted down🏭hopefully @ Lorain's US Steel works or Cleveland's Arcelor~Mittal steel for seamless pipe,structural steel or coil steel for Chevy's & Ford's made here.And for rebuilding rusting,crumbling infrastructure here.🇺🇸
