Great vid for anyone wanting to learn how to cut masons mitres in kitchen Worktop, right up until the point where he uses general purpose silicone that's a big no no. Silicone is for sanitary ware or tiles not for chipboard, put a bead of silicone on a tile and a bead of silicone on bare chipboard and see which one you can peel off! Good products to use are 'top seal' or 'bb complete', colourfil is OK but it goes off fast and doesn't give you much working time, use pva glue to seal up your hob and sink cut outs. I personally use Balcotan waterproof glue [used on yachts but not expensive] between the joints [it seeps into the top] which provides a waterproof almost unbreakable join. A bit messy, but a super join [wear surgeons gloves so as not to get the glue on your skin].

I had to have my worktops replaced on a new build as silicone was used on the joint and expanded the wood lifting the laminate, the kitchen supplier said it should of been glued

Colour fill is the best way, especially if the joint is not perfect. You will see the joint on dark w/tops using silicone. And then you can't put the colour fill in. I seal mine with wood glue, let it dry, Then colour fill. Just before fixing. He is a pro, and can get away with his method. Diy'ers may struggle to get an " invisible" joint.

Came across this video looking for info regarding a similar install. Very skillfully done and helpfully presented! I do have a question: After the female piece is cut using the jig, instead of measuring and using the jig again, why not instead use the prepared piece as pattern with a flush cut router bit or a router bit with a bushing guide? Sort of like a large scale bit of intarsia work. It seems like it would be quicker and perhaps even a bit more accurate due the very real possibility of human measuring errors. One could even cut creative shapes at the joint that might be attractive. Perhaps others have insights into this that would be helpful for me to understand. Thanks!

Because of the size and weight of the benchtop. Jig is easily clamped and re positioned to get it exact.

I would not risk with that silicone, thats just makes you keep tightening and tightening. Please use proper wood glue. Other than that brilliant)

How did you clean the silicone off? I can imagine on a satin or matt worktop that silicon would shine and leave a residue? Video was a bit geezer'ish but I learned some stuff watching it so Kudos.

Nice job......but we're the edges of the work top sealed to prevent the work top rotting ? I had a new worktop fitted by a kitchen fitter 6 years ago,now all starting to rot around sink area.The reason being the edging not sealed

I don't usually seal the sink area as it shouldn't get wet! The sink should be sealed to the worktop so no water should get anywhere near it. You could always mix some pva with water and crawl under the sink and brush it on? Usually only protect underside of worktop which is directly above dishwasher

Seal the sink edge with the same stuff he used to joint the mitres, that edge shouldn't get wet but why take the chance, it can get cold under there and condensation can form, once its blown there ain't no going back.

China graph pens/Grease pens, they are waxy and good for dark surfaces and glass, more importantly they are easy to clean off.

I tried that technique with a decent Trend router and a brand new Eurbaour cutting blade and a Magnet template but the result was not a perfect match.....very close ...but I thought it was supposed to not need any other attention. I managed to get a result with a manual plane but this should not be needed, should it?

Very old comment, but I'll reply anyway! I did the same thing - first time attempt with a trend template and like you it wasn't perfect but I couldn't really figure out why. What I realised is that despite having a 30mm bush and a decent DeWalt router with decent bits, the template isn't actually a perfect 30mm. For me it was almost imperceptible but there's a little bit of sideways play. What I did was very very very carefully put the template back on the male (This took me ages, but I'd already cut it to length so had zero room for error) and went over the cut again ensuring I pushed right against the template. It barely seemed to do anything, but sure enough it fitted the second time and looks outstanding. I think it just altered the curve slightly and got everything perfect So that's my tip - ensure you get right into the template when cutting

Those cut edges need to be sealed with pva, over the years they are going to rot unless they are sealed.

Job was good but could have been better if you had not kept talking to him as I am also a Chippy and its not as easy as it looks but thumbs up to the bold fella for putting up with you and also at the same time getting that joint over the line mind you he chipped a bit of the worktop at the end by the grove of the male joint if he was working for me and done that I would have totally made him buy a new one and also I would not allow that much banging on top of the worktop as it's only laminate and the hammer he was using was very unsuitable for that much force being applied on that worktop

Well I wouldn't use a jigsaw in my worktop jig, also when he cuts the male joint he's only using one location bush and relying solely on the clamps to hold the jig. What's with spraying his power tools with green paint?? Buy an engraver!!

Philip Hazleton or just Spray it green? I sprayed all my batteries with yellow line marking paint because it's not necessarily to identify the tools if stolen but also a quick way to tell if someone is using your tools or to see where they are without awkwardly inspecting someone else's kit

Philip Hazleton you can only use one loc pin for the male cut unless the kitchen walls are a perfect 90. Also cutting away the waste with the jigsaw is a good idea as the router is then only doing half the work.
