To be frank I don't think Wally can blame the Pistols for his bad fortune. They wouldn't have become the band we know them as if he had stayed. It's a sad story but it's a merciless business.

True..He probably would have become heroin addicted a lot sooner and heavier if he`d been getting royalties any sooner.

Yes he didn't look the part granted, but they could have given him a job as a roadie or something, he would have probably been happy to still be apart of it, to sack him off completely was well out of order.

The first time I heard "Did you no wrong" I immediately thought "Status Quo". The song had/has a far lesser Sex Pistols type song/punk construct and was imo far more mainstream Top 20 single/LP 'conventional/traditional' rock. A surprise it to hear it first time around as a B side. I always thought that Submission had a lesser aggresive punk melody and vibe also.

Did you no wrong reminds me of Down Down by Status Quo.

The riff for Submission is much the same as The Doors` song "Hello I Love You".

Well done Johnny. I never heard about this, cool Ron put Wally's story in a book too. Sad to hear some of this, but proper his music contribution gets known. I hope this story gets told more. Glad of the ones that do quit the drug and do their music like Pete Doherty.

A couple of years ago I went to Dublin for my birthday from the new John Lennon Airport and inside are murals of the Fab four leering down at you and to my amazement who should be queueing up with me but Pete Best! I wondered what must be going through his mind seeing his replacement, Ringo up there While he was getting the same cheap ass Ryanair flight that I was getting… The truth is there are many many Wally Nightingales out there -TOO MANY! It’s a very cutthroat business, rock ‘n’ roll…

Fantastic interview on a very interesting period of the pistols history. I’m going to have to get the book !! It’s a shame that wally being sacked hit him so hard and that he couldn’t recover and move on from it. From reading between the lines and after hearing this interview, it looks like Mr Jones’ “I started playing 3 months before the first gig” story is BS & looks like Wally taught and set him on his way with guitar a lot longer than those ‘3 months’ 😉

Great video. I got into the Pistols in 1987 after I shoplifted one of their live albums from a used bookstore. It was almost impossible for me to find anything other than the movie Sid and Nancy back then. Around 1990, I borrowed someone's copy of The Punk Rock Movie, and then I got the book ... And I Don't Want to live this Life for Xmas. Then the Great Rock and Roll Swindle was officially released in 92, and I was waiting at the doors at the record store open for a vhs copy of that. When John's book Rotten came out, it was a Bible. And then I read Noel's book, 12 Days on The Road (I'd later become online buddies with Noel for about 5 years before he died, He loved Sid. I don't think he liked the other band members? He would always reply with swear words when I'd ask. We were messaging, and I could tell if they were aimed at me or if he was answering my question. When the Filth and the Fury came out at Blockbuster, I was there at store open and had two vcrs ready to copy it. Luckily, It had no Macrovision and I made a beautiful illegal copy of it. Don't worry, I bought the DVD as soon as I could. What an incredible experience. After nearly 15 years of being fascinated with the Sex Pistols and their history, that was really the first time all of the members were there to tell the story. And Julien Temples adding all that great archival footage just made me feel like I was transported to that time and place with the band. The marijuana probably helped :^) Anyway, I tried to find a little info on Wally but only saw some kinda sad looking pictures and learned that he died in 96. So this video is fantastic! He really sounded like a great guitarist. Did he teach Steve anything on playing. They look very similar in their moves and the type of guitars. I know someone had to teach Steve how to play those leads? I know I had to seek out people in 92 when a friend gave me my first guitar and amp. I never got good but it's great to pick up after a few drinks sometime. I hook my phone up to the aux input on my amp, play a drum loop off KZbin and I have an instant drummer. If only I had the speed those guys were doing back then 😆. Any thanks for the video. Sorry for the long winded comment, but I love the history of the Pistols. Kinda played out Bollocks but now I love that shifty live at Burton On Trent cassette. Sounded horrible on my Walkman in 87. But sounds much better on Bose and Klipsche with my Yamaha amp and Onkyo cassette deck. Rest in Peace Wally. It's a shame he died. Would have been great to hear from him these days. I believe he would have found some solace or whatever the word is knowing that he is someone people now know was a big part of the bands history
