I think you could still do it for $5 if you didn’t have to buy it all at once. What I mean is buying 30 days of food for $50 would go further than 3 days of food for $5, just because you could take advantage of the lower per meal cost of a bag of dry beans, a dozen eggs, etc. I’m sure you know that already, but it does make it interesting to see you put it together with such small amounts.

Michelle, you did it again. I would frankly never thought of carrot fritters! But, I do think you could use Almond flour for added protein and it could be better for me as I try to watch my carbs. Also, the idea of cinnamon and raisins added made my mouth water.

We shred up carrot and add to tuna salad. Can use a small amount of pasta . Also have found buying frozen chopped peppers to keep on hand to mix with scrambled eggs or other things way cheaper than buying a single fresh pepper

I have never tried a bagel. I just looked online and a 4 pack is $5.49, specialty item hence the price. Yours looked wonderful, will definitely try making these in the next few days! Have visions of pulling one from the freezer as required, how frugal would that be!❤
@ambreewilliams658510 ай бұрын
When I make the 2 ingredient bagels, I always make them round and poke a hole in the middle. I tried making blueberry bagels once and used frozen blueberries. Don't ever do that lol! The next batch I'm going to make will be made with vanilla whole milk yogurt with cinnamon and (maybe) dried cranberries. I also made a tortilla/flatbread with the same recipe and it was really nice making breakfast tacos with them! 👍🏾👍🏾 So much you can do with that dough. Some also made cinnamon buns with it.

Michelle. I think you did a brilliant job getting the most out of $5 ish for three days of meals. Not only are the nine meals frugal, they are extremely appetizing - and that is quite a feat! If a person needed to continue along these budget restrictions indefinitely, how do you think they should add the needed calories? I’m thinking that a trip to a food pantry often nets a jar of peanut butter…could that be used for a spicy sauce/topping for some of these meals? I’m trying to think of ways to get additional calories, but other than adding peanut butter or more oil, I am stumped. Adding some sugar would add (empty) calories - would that even be worth it? Again, I think you are doing a wonderful service to many who live on a tight food budget. Your videos are also educational for those who have more wiggle room in the grocery budget, because you show such interesting ways to add healthy flavor to food.
@ArdentMichelle10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much 😁 I like the idea of adding peanut butter, nuts, and also avocado. One avocado where I live is only .68 but may not be affordable in some areas. I'm kind of having the same issue. I'm eating whole foods and laying off of dairy (cheese is a big one for me) and trying to make sure I'm getting enough calories. The rice is calorie rich and so is oil. I like to use olive oil and sesame oil because they are good for you, but some people can't afford those oils. I would say that bread is another cheap way to get in some additional calories.

I commented earlier without having seen the whole video. This is one of your best ever! So many great ideas. The bagels on a tight budget are inspiring, and along with the thwarted congee plan go a long way toward lending that sensation of abundance. Your gorgeous plating adds to this as well, as do the little things like crispy chickpeas (which I will make probably tomorrow!). Those carrot fritters look so yummy! I’m actually regretting being super organised with my baking this morning as I’m wanting bagels now. Sadly they’ll have to wait until tomorrow as I used up all my flour and the other half is picking more up on the way home from work. A tip if you’ve got access to a stand mixer or food processor, you can ‘knead’ dough with these appliances and it makes bread making a lot easier! I bake several batches of yeasted bread each week and a decent stand mixer takes all the work out of it.

Combine about a cup of protein eg, mince, chicken or tofu cut up small (1/4 inch) , combine with 1 cup chickpea flour, 1 teaspoon each bicarbonate soda, 1 cup milk, baking powder, 1 egg, 1/2 cup frozen mix veg, p & s & any herb . Combine all and fry in non stick pan on med. heat for 7 min each side. Cut into 1/4’s serve with sauce, delicious! Love your channel, keep up the great work, cheers Denise ( Australia)

Awesome video! I'm sad egg prices are increasing! Personally (in the San Diego area), I am still seeing dozens for under $2.50, but probably not for long. I was cracking up watching you make bagels - for all the bread baking I do, I have yet to attempt bagels! They are intimidating to me, though your recipe is very accessible. Baking breads and bagels has a fairly steep learning curve for sure! When I first started baking sourdough, I followed a lot of no knead recipes and would just dump the dough into a Dutch oven. I eventually learned how to work with dough and what it is supposed to look like, but I did bake nearly every day for 6 months before it started to click! I am inspired to try making bagels now!

Gluten free is such a challenge! I get $52 in food stamps & $65 on my insurance otc/healthy foods card so $117..I get social security but have rent & other bills...I like your videos! Small crockpot meals would be good to see

I've been eating some gluten free foods. It's definitely more expensive. I made a short with one of my meals. I've discovered that I could easily go gluten free though.

another option to replace the carrot fritters is chive/green onion pancakes. Maangchi has a really good recipe that I've made loads of times. :)

Hello Michelle, I often hear you say that you are responding to various challenges. I have a challenge for you that I am trying myself because I am having surgery this summer and will be unable to work for 4 months whilst I recover so my food budget has to be dropped to 10 dollars per week. I am not counting my teas, lemonade, nor waters in this budget as I will have those prestocked in my pantry and freezer. I have tons of herbs and spices and oils etc. I only have Dollar Tree and Walmart as national chains near me. I need not only three smallish meals per day but two snacks, one a.m. one p.m. I need high protien, mid carb. I am not a fan of Indian spices--no offence to anyone, but they are not my personal preference, and I do not have the mobility nor manual dexterity to make my own noodles, breads, tortillas, etc. So this is my challenge to you if you choose to accept it: shopping at only Walmart or Dollar Tree for the week, $10, 21 meals, 14 snacks, high protien, mid carb, variety of meals if possible, no Indian inspired dishes, and no hand made carbs. Do you accept my challenge?

Rustyrosey… I found your challenge very interesting. I think I’ll try it for myself. Thanks for the idea

what are you thinking of when you say Indian spices? Also what is a mid carb count to you?

Very nice video, Michelle! I love your ideas. I'm on a low-spend budget this month so this video was appreciated I'd like to try making fritters with carrots and maybe other veggies like zucchini, spaghetti squash, peppers, or butternut squash. And my son wants take a stab at baking some rye bread this week. Hmmm, rye bagels sound interesting. So, we'll be trying some new things in our house. Thanks for all your hard work. 😁❤️

Michelle, don't feel bad about your baking skills. My bisquits always come out like hockey pucks, but I can do excellent casseroles!

I enjoy watching your videos and I’m amazed at the prices you have. Just to compare, I went on Walmart Canada website and put everything that you bought in my cart. I had to do some fancy figuring because it seems we can’t buy just 6 eggs or anything less than a 2lb bag of carrots in my area of western Canada. I managed to get a fairly close comparison though. It came to $10.91 Cdn which converts to $8.16 US. Quite the difference!

Another innovative video. Making pasta would be a great budget stretcher. I've used just flour & water before and still it tasted better than store bought. My tip is to knead it for a long time. Ive done it in a bowl watching TV for 20 minutes . And than let it rest. You can add egg which i prefer or a bit of pureed veg. And than whatever spice, fat , sauce etc.

I meant egg in your flour for for egg noodles/ pasta or veg to flour for say spinach pasta. Possibilities are endless.

agreed...pasta is on the bucket list.

Hi Michelle, This all looked very good to me. That bagel recipe really interested me, I am going to try that, maybe even today. I did laugh when you were trying to form them but to me they looked professional. I love to bake and do it often, my waistline shows it . 🤣I wish I lived next door to you, I would give you lessons and you could show me the things you do that I don't do. Yeah, eggs went back down and now are rising again, but still nutrition wise its a great value. Thanks for recipes. Charlotte

Hi Charlotte 😁 I would love to bake with you 🥰 that would be so fun. We would always be running each other food if we lived next door to each other! 😂 Hope you do try these, because they were very good. I'm definitely going to make these again, but I also want to try making them with bread flour.
