Walmart used to be active in Germany. They cut tails when they realized that the legal framework for how to deal with employees is substantially different in Germany and will be enforced, and to boot, customers cared how they treated their employees....
@TrangleC5 жыл бұрын
The main reason for why they retreated from the German market was that they couldn't do business the way they wanted to. Walmarts strategy is to lure in customers and undercut the competition by selling some stuff at a loss. That is prohibited by law in Germany. You are not allowed to sell stuff for a lower price than you bought it yourself, at least not when you're a big business. The mystery is whether and why Walmart didn't know that before they came to Germany. They generally aren't good at expanding into foreign markets though. Some business analyst once said: "Walmart fails everywhere it can't drive a truck to." They aren't the only such big retailer that doesn't operate in Germany though. The second biggest worldwide is Carrefour, a French super market chain that operates giant mega marts too, like Walmart. They operate worldwide, but not in Germany, which is amusing, considering France and Germany are neighbors. I was born and raised in Germany too, only about a 1 hour car ride away from the French border and I never even heard of Carrefour before I went to China as a student in my early 20s. I did a internship in the city of Qingdao in 2003 and they had 2 giant Carrefour mega marts there, even though it is a relatively small city, by Chinese standards. It is kind of ironic that someone who grew up near France had to fly half way around the world to China to encounter a French super market for the first time. I assume Carrefour stays out of Germany because of that law I mentioned too. I don't know though. Actually, knowing how socialist France is and how incredibly powerful the farmers there are, I would be surprised if France wouldn't have laws against price dumping for groceries too.

Also German customers do not really like those huge markets, who provide everything. That’s what I learned in my economy classes. I agree. I dislike their business practices, and buy very little there now. Only an occasional item. I dislike that once they have driven everybody else out of the market, they then stop carrying anything that doesn't make enough money for them. And the quality keeps getting worse and worse. To keep their price-point down, each year, the sweatshirts and sweatpants get thinner and thinner. Are we supposed to wear two pair or sweatpants then at once? To me, Walmart and Amazon represent the worst in modern business practices/cultural results. I prefer to spend my money at Mom and Pop stores, or smaller places.
@Koko-lr5bc5 жыл бұрын
@@CuriousEarthMan I agree, but I think Amazon is more of the culprit for the mom and pop stores closings! And it's sad. The malls are closing I mean most of the stores inside are closing.
@CuriousEarthMan5 жыл бұрын
@@Koko-lr5bc I think now, Amazon has moved to the front of the line. In years past, when Walmart was eating up rural America, they would put one Walmart somewhere between three or so towns, and it would devastate small town "main street" businesses, causing their main streets to become basically shut down. Then, Amazon came along and worked on retail itself....yes, more stores closed, and the malls were hit really hard too! Amazon destroyed countless brick and mortar stores, only to come in after, and open a number of brick and mortars of their own.....like bookstores and now supermarket(s). I don't do any business on Amazon. I use eBay. For Amazon, it no longer seems that brick and mortar retail is bad, it's only bad it if it isn't THEIR store. I take your point, though!

Honestly, there will never be a time when humans don't kill other humans. The American second amendment was meant to deny government a complete *monopoly* *of* *the* *tools* *of* *death* "For Better *OR* worse!" You dump them in a Cookie Jar (with a sealant ring) or snack basket, and then eat them over a period of time at your own discretion. The concept of large capacity packaging is so that you don't have to go back to the store every day to get your fix for any consumable item. Shopping in a country where they only sell single serving packaging would drive me nuts. If Walmart sized packaging blows your mind, go check out Sam's Club...Walmart's Members Only store where you buy in Bulk.

All of our Meijer stores were 24hr before the pandemic and as far as I know had no plans to change that. @@lollypop2414 my local Meijer stores were 24 hours before covid. Only 3 Walmart stores were 24 hours before covid, across 2 counties. One dropped being 24 hours, due to lack of people in the store after 10pm, but closed by midnight. One location tried going 24 hours, after relocating from a D1 store, to a Superstore, only to go to being open from 6am to 1am in 6 months. But I don't expect Walmart to go back to 24 hours in my area, once covid is under control. It's hard to say with Meijer. As it stands, not all Meijer stores were 24 hours even before covid. Most Chicagoland locations weren't 24 hours before covid. I'm thinking maybe because a few communities they're in don't allow for 24 hour stores. In the case of the Wauwatosa Wisconsin store, theft was why they can't have that store 24 hours. I heard that Meijer has regretted opening there, due to crime going up in that city.

If you really want to hear Phil complain about prices of food items you should take him to Publix. How about going to one of the wholesale warehouse places like Costco, Sam's Club, or BJ's? Phil would love all the taste-test samples you get. Love your videos!!

It was fun seeing how excited he was shopping around. It's also interesting to see him talk about how expensive things are when in the states I feel we're told Germany is expensive; especially considering you all were in Walmart, a store that is supposed to be inexpensive (although it isn't).

For smaller portions look around the checkout stands, smaller portions are an impulse buy for Americans. The "crooked prices" represents the "Wal-Mart roll back" if you go to another store you will usually find the price is 3.99 instead of 3.56. (+tax.)

When he was surprised they sell guns at Walmart, that was me just a couple months ago when I moved from California to Arizona. All my life I've lived in California and I never once remember seeing guns for sale at Walmart, at Arizona they are everywhere! Fun fact: I once went out to a small town diner to have lunch and a customer brought a SHOTGUN with him and left it on the table as he ate his lunch at the restaurant!
@hopeless444 жыл бұрын
Krythix Felt this! I’m a US military brat and just moved from Germany to AZ (lived in AZ before moving to Germany) and the guns are literally everywhere where I live. Someone came into Subway and had three knives strapped in his leg, one in his boot, and a gun in his waistband... I got a little nervous ngl. Crazy!

It's so weird for me to add the tax to the price. I hope you can understand my English. I enjoyed the video

I'm American, I abhor Walmart and dread having to go! It's 5 minutes away and I go maybe 3 times a year. Walmart grocery prices are frequently higher then a grocery store. Most Americans buy groceries when there's a sale. If boneless chicken breast goes on sale, I buy enough for 6 months! I have a freezer.

Great video Walmart is the one stop shopping if that is to your liking. The real Juggernaut is Costco you have to have a membership to shop there. I have shopped in some of the stores in Germany I remember having to pay a mark (it was before the Euro so it was a while ago) to get a shopping cart that I could use. You got your mark back when you returned the cart.
