Excellent job! One trick you might want to experiment with (maybe try this on scrap pieces first) is instead of filling in gaps with wood glue and saw dust, instead lay down a coat of polyurethane on the gaps, and while the poly is still wet, sand it. The poly and saw dust will fill in the gaps really precisely, and then you can sand the poly off and finish as you would otherwise. I prefer this to using glue because finish can leave splotches with glue.

Awesome suggestion! I’d never thought of using the poly to help with the gaps but that makes sense as it hardens just like the glue.

That IS a great tip! also, you might try using Titebond III with walnut. It’s darker than TBII when it dries. Great project!
@alvagoldbook22 жыл бұрын
@@michaelkeymont501 I really like Titebond 3 just for the longer cure time. I've been meaning to try hide glue. I heard you can just wash it off the seams with water after it dries. That might come in handy on some projects.

If you’re not making mistakes you’re not trying. My dad always told me to stop pointing out the mistakes to people as most folks would not notice them. One of my favorite quotes from a woodworker who had built a beautiful queen ann secretary, with ball and claw feet. When I asked if all the legs were the same he said no, but you can only look at one at a time. Keep up the great work and enjoy the hobby. On a sidenote, I live in Raleigh not far from Raleigh Reclaimed and I have not been there yet. I’ll have to go check them out.

Really nice job. I know all about making mistakes. My issue at times is that I want to be done and forget to enjoy the process. 1 year on YT - congrats. I'll be joining you soon!

For a first go this was very good result. So nice job! With regards to changes, as always, hindsight is always a wonderful thing, but personally, I wouldn’t have glued in the top lid and bottom pieces in the groove. If anything, a small amount of glue in the middle of the long sides (long grain) would suffice and reduce the chances of it rattling. Also, positioning the splines to be equal would have looked a little better; the central one could have been a little higher, so it was the same distance from the top of the bottom half (if that makes sense), set at the same distance from the bottom spline to the bottom of the box. It’s also a shame there’s sapwood on the sides too. Lastly, with regards to the maple interior, I wouldn’t have glued it in at all; I would have piston fitted the pieces into place and mitred the corners. Either way, as you say, it was your first one, and mistakes are all part of the learning process. Keep up the good work.

Just a tip: you can easily make splines without the jig on a small box like this, and even bigger pieces. You just have to set the appropriate blade height so the lenght of the cut is equal on both faces of the spline. And obviously you put a bump stop where the box needs to stop when you run it through. Great video 👌

Very nice built. Can you link the trays and handle ?
How does the lid open and close without catching on the maple insert? Especially on the front side.
@mombowoodworks2 жыл бұрын
Well… that was ANOTHER mistake I made… that front edge was in the way. Turns out a sh*t load of sanding did the trick. Sanded both that edge and the upper-inner edge of the lid. Can’t see it with the naked eye unless you’re looking, but I can assure you it was an oversight and a late period fix.

Thanks Curtis! From some mom and pop shop called Amazon.com ;-). Typed in wooden drawer handles and looked for one with walnut. There was a great selection actually.
