In 2006, Walt Disney World Resort was a vibrant destination offering magical experiences across its four theme parks, two water parks, numerous hotels, and the Downtown Disney entertainment district (now Disney Springs). Magic Kingdom continued to enchant visitors with classic attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean, which debuted updates inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean film series and Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and The Haunted Mansion. Evening entertainment featured the beloved Wishes fireworks show. At Epcot, guests flocked to new attractions like Soarin’, alongside favorites such as Test Track, Mission: SPACE, and Spaceship Earth, while enjoying cultural experiences in the World Showcase. Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios) highlighted its filmmaking roots with hits like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, and the recent addition of Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show.
Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Expedition Everest, which opened in April 2006, became a marquee attraction, thrilling guests with its backward sections and encounter with the yeti, while Kilimanjaro Safaris and Dinosaur remained popular. Guests could stay at various resorts catering to different budgets, from value accommodations like Disney’s Pop Century Resort to deluxe options like Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Downtown Disney provided entertainment with DisneyQuest, an indoor interactive theme park, and the Cirque du Soleil show La Nouba.
Seasonal events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party added festive cheer. At the same time, the Year of a Million Dreams campaign, launched in October 2006, surprised guests with free FastPasses, exclusive experiences, and stays in the Cinderella Castle Suite. Paper tickets and the early physical FastPass system were still in use, as smartphone apps like My Disney Experience had yet to be introduced. Walt Disney World in 2006 seamlessly blended classic Disney magic with thrilling new experiences and evolving storytelling.
