Maverick, Walter Boyd is without a doubt the most skilful player Jamaica have produced. The skill set he had put him alongside Ronaldinho and Jay-Jay Okocha in the modern game. His mindset is what held him back. Leon Bailey on the other hand had proper guidance and backing which enable him to make it to where he is presently .

I will just say this about the great Blacka Pearl: when Captain Horace Burrel was asked on Talking Sports as to why the tickets were so expensive in an upcoming match, his exact response was “we have to admit that Walter Boyd’s quality is on par with the greatest in the world currently so we can’t just charge any and any fee to see him play”. He was the best I saw when he had a god game. Very balanced view Sir Maverick.

Back in the day there was not many opportunities for Jamaican footballers to shine, so we would not see the true pptentials of our players. We had a player like Paul (Pablo) Willians who represented Jamaica on numerable occassions, scored lots of goals for our country and is hidden in history. Devon ( Roots) Lewis and many more was more skillful than that of the great Walter Blacka Pearl Boyd. Whom I highly rate as a Jamaican footballer. But Jamaicans been have many hidden greats. He is just one that came at the right time, when its much easier to even make the world Cup. Big up the great Blacka Boyd. Allan played professionally at 17yrs old.

"PRACTICE makes PERFECT"...Arguably one of Jamaica's MOST Skilful Footballer. Unfortunately, and like many, Walter Boyd displayed an attitude grounded in the belief that his SKILL was All that was necessary to maintain and to elevate his standing and craft. I attended North Street Excelsior and witnessed Mr. Boyd skipping laps(warm-up). He went and hid himself rather than doing like everyone else on the Excelsior High School Manning Cup Squad did. "Life is one big road with a lot of signs"...It is all about CHOICES. His immense potential combined with diligent effort would have elevated himself and our country to such great heights...!!!

My favourite Jamaican football player ever. The goal against Mexico in the Azteca was great, where he silenced 120,000 people in the stadium and million more that were watching. However, his greatest goal wasn't caught on camera. It was during a World Cup qualifier away to Barbados. It was coming towards the end of the match, the game was 0-0. The camera thought the game was over and turned off his camera. Suddenly Walter Blacka Pearl Boyd control the ball in his chest near the half way line. According to the radio commentary, he turn, spun and volleyed the ball straight pass the goal keeper. Jamaica won the match 1 nil and we progress to the next round of the 1998 qualifiers. This is one of the reason the fans blocked the road to the airport when Boyd wasn't initially included in the 22 man squad for the 1998 World Cup. They said if it wasn't for that brilliant goal Jamaica wouldn't have had the chance to qualify for the World Cup. It is sad that such great potential wasn't maximise. Some of the contributing factors were; lack of discipline, laziness combined with over confidence (hence Boyd didn't see the need to train hard), being surrounded by the wrong company and lack of proper mentoring.

Maverick. You spot on but I would also like to add that what Walter possess is lacking from the current team. Walter had the confidence, skills and buzz around him that made the team confident that they can win because at any moment he can do something special to put the game in our favor. All Jamaican teams at all levels is built around a Star player or two and the current is lacking that, which is why we are not performing. Bailey has achieved more but lacks the buzz and confidence of the team. I saw Alan Cole in two games and he had that buzz and talent but unfortunately suffered the same fate as Walter, indiscipline. We who saw Walter on the ball at his best is longing to see another player like him. Those who never saw him just cannot imagine how awesome he was. But as you said under achieved. When Boyd went to Swansea. He scored 2 goals on debut. He was that good.

As the Jamaican fans sit in the stadium during that dull and boring 0-0 draw with Honduras, many would have given their right hand for just a few minutes of the GOD ENERGY that the Pearl possessed. One of the greatest we have ever seen hands down. I never bought into the "DISCIPLINARY" argument because as I predicted there was no Youth Development program put in place to ensure that we groom the youths in the right direction. The outcry was really about this remnant from our enslavement where we forgot how to love and nurture each other. Obama perfectly encapsulate that colonial mindset of scolding or talking down to instead of teaching and building up...Oracle

It was the quality he showed on the ball like he was better trained than anything else from Jamaica. How deadly and powerful his shots were off either foot. how precise and slick the passes were how the ball stopped anyway and anyhow he told it to stop and… the very ignorant part… when him shif’ yu yu stay “shiffed”. When Boyd was in high school playing premier league he was so spectacular a lot of people lied about seeing him play and what they saw him do… that also added to his legend.

@OralTraceyMaverick: I saw Skill Cole played a couple of times after he came back from Brazil, and a few times playing for 'House Of Dread,' and some passes that he made I am yet to see any footballer including the great Zico who had a similar style of passing the ball with the outside of the foot make. Skill Cole control was like Marcelo who can use any part of his body and trap the ball dead. Player like Skill use to carry the ball on defender and told them 'Watch yuh salad' and still salad them and the sideline would be rolling on the ground. That era brought to light some of the most vicious defender like Billy Perkins and Carl Brown who would break a guy foot before taking a mash up or salad. I saw Walter Boyd play through most of his career, and he was skillful and fast, and could take on a defender and turn him over, and as you say had great potential. But Skill Cole level of football is what you called the Magician level; he was that good. But like Blaka, players like that won't be putting in a lot of running on the field. However, I have not seen his level of ball wizardry replicated. The only person who comes near to that is Marcelo from Brazil. Also of note is that Skill Cole was invited to play in Brazil after he played against a Brazil team who came on a tour in Jamaica and signed a professional contract.

@@georgesmith1155 I guess that is why people say "best they have ever seen." If you never saw Skill Cole, you wouldn't know any better. The man was magic and I saw him later in life. His son Alli was someone I played with and was also a chip off his daddy block.

Blacka Pearl had the entire nation in the palm of his hands in that era....but a total waste of talent through poor work ethic....I will have to agree with you on this one, Mr. Tracy.

Yes, he is an underachiever. Very good skills, I know him personally, we use to attend school together. Even Alan Cole jr attended the same school and was very talented as well, however, "Pearl" was "light year" ahead of him. He was very indiscipline, I guess because of the community where he lived and the persons who were guiding him. Fast forward in the future, he is a great person and realized the mistakes he had made.

Walter Boyd was much more effective in a Jamaican jersey than Leon Bailey has been to date.
