Back in the day there was not many opportunities for Jamaican footballers to shine, so we would not see the true pptentials of our players. We had a player like Paul (Pablo) Willians who represented Jamaica on numerable occassions, scored lots of goals for our country and is hidden in history. Devon ( Roots) Lewis and many more was more skillful than that of the great Walter Blacka Pearl Boyd. Whom I highly rate as a Jamaican footballer. But Jamaicans been have many hidden greats. "PRACTICE makes PERFECT"...Arguably one of Jamaica's MOST Skilful Footballer. Unfortunately, and like many, Walter Boyd displayed an attitude grounded in the belief that his SKILL was All that was necessary to maintain and to elevate his standing and craft. I attended North Street Excelsior and witnessed Mr. Boyd skipping laps(warm-up). He went and hid himself rather than doing like everyone else on the Excelsior High School Manning Cup Squad did. "Life is one big road with a lot of signs"...It is all about CHOICES. His immense potential combined with diligent effort would have elevated himself and our country to such great heights...!!!

My favourite Jamaican football player ever. The goal against Mexico in the Azteca was great, where he silenced 120,000 people in the stadium and million more that were watching. However, his greatest goal wasn't caught on camera. It was during a World Cup qualifier away to Barbados. It was coming towards the end of the match, the game was 0-0. The camera thought the game was over and turned off his camera. Suddenly Walter Blacka Pearl Boyd control the ball in his chest near the half way line. According to the radio commentary, he turn, spun and volleyed the ball straight pass the goal keeper. Jamaica won the match 1 nil and we progress to the next round of the 1998 qualifiers. This is one of the reason the fans blocked the road to the airport when Boyd wasn't initially included in the 22 man squad for the 1998 World Cup. They said if it wasn't for that brilliant goal Jamaica wouldn't have had the chance to qualify for the World Cup. It is sad that such great potential wasn't maximise. Some of the contributing factors were; lack of discipline, laziness combined with over confidence (hence Boyd didn't see the need to train hard), being surrounded by the wrong company and lack of proper mentoring.

Walter had the confidence, skills and buzz around him that made the team confident that they can win because at any moment he can do something special to put the game in our favor. All Jamaican teams at all levels is built around a Star player or two and the current is lacking that, which is why we are not performing. Bailey has achieved more but lacks the buzz and confidence of the team. I saw Alan Cole in two games and he had that buzz and talent but unfortunately suffered the same fate as Walter, indiscipline. We who saw Walter on the ball at his best is longing to see another player like him. Those who never saw him just cannot imagine how awesome he was. But as you said under achieved. When Boyd went to Swansea. He scored 2 goals on debut. He was that good.

@OralTraceyMaverick: I saw Skill Cole played a couple of times after he came back from Brazil, and a few times playing for 'House Of Dread,' and some passes that he made I am yet to see any footballer including the great Zico who had a similar style of passing the ball with the outside of the foot make. Skill Cole control was like Marcelo who can use any part of his body and trap the ball dead. Player like Skill use to carry the ball on defender and told them 'Watch yuh salad' and still salad them and the sideline would be rolling on the ground. That era brought to light some of the most vicious defender like Billy Perkins and Carl Brown who would break a guy foot before taking a mash up or salad. I saw Walter Boyd play through most of his career, and he was skillful and fast, and could take on a defender and turn him over, and as you say had great potential. But Skill Cole level of football is what you called the Magician level; he was that good. But like Blaka, players like that won't be putting in a lot of running on the field. However, I have not seen his level of ball wizardry replicated. The only person who comes near to that is Marcelo from Brazil. Also of note is that Skill Cole was invited to play in Brazil after he played against a Brazil team who came on a tour in Jamaica and signed a professional contract.
