His point about smoking is a quick & effective. Any idea that erodes personal liberty, no matter how well intentioned or popular, invites tyranny.

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Same goes for people. You can offer them a job but you can't make them work if they don't want to.

After listening to this, I feel like re-reading Atlas Shrugged. The encroachment of government has been slow and treacherous.

Look up Stephan Consella, he has spent years talking about the economic damage of IP and patents.

Are you kidding me. there's a lot of issues with Copyrights and Patents. For exemple patents is made to protect Innovation, today we have things like Patent trolls, vague patent (did you know that presenting information in a list is patented ?).... When big coorporation owned the most important patent in a field, they can forbid new competitor to come in.

I never thought about it like that.. But smoking analogy... coupled with current events... It made me feel bad for smokers. It was just a health policy. But I always assumed smoking was a good thing to get rid of. But truth is, if it was rly fair... we would have let the market decide the fate of smoking places... not the government...?...makes me thing...

Tori Ellise, Dr. Williams has the ability to simplify complex issues. Your enlightenment on the smoking issue is a process I wish other people opened their minds too in other areas.

How do we get back to a free, fair, and open market?
@Kabodanki8 жыл бұрын
Never, Once you give people things, it's nearly impossible to get it back.
@maddin95k18 жыл бұрын
Sad but true. Giving people something and taking it away is worse than not giviging them something in the first place.

Assuming we would get the chance of a hard reset. Shouldn´t we seperate state and economics like we seperated state and church in the past? Just to prevent repeating this cycle of ever growing goverment and crony capitalism.
@pepepineda958 жыл бұрын
easy. lower regulations and government spending

The flat tax rate concept does not fix the problem because companies receive tax exemptions from the IRS
@maddin95k18 жыл бұрын
But doesn´t the concept of a flat tax imply that there are no exemptions?
@MrsBStacyBattleBorn8 жыл бұрын
No. non-profit corporations, foundations, associations, etc...are tax exempt entities that the wealthy use to avoid paying income tax now. Those type of entities will continue to exist. There are also real estate holding companies and other investment companies that receive deferments so long as they continue to roll over their profits into other assets..which they do.
@EDTHEWATERGUY8 жыл бұрын
Yes we could easily change to a flat tax without exemptions but it should only be a flat sales tax. The income tax needs to go.

I second that emotion. What is the sense in taxing production anyway? Tax consumption. And, let's stop reporting every detail of our lives to big daddy government. Get rid of the income tax! Just pay at the register.
@ROGER20958 жыл бұрын
Tax income? Tax production? Tax consumption? It wouldn't make a difference to anyone if the tax collected was low. For example, if the tax was 5% of GDP, you wouldn't care if you paid it when you earned it or when you spent it. The same is true if the tax collect was very high. If the rate was 95%, you'd be no better off if it was collected on your earnings or your spending. Lowlife politicians like to dangle carrots to taxpayers, suggesting that their tax plans will force someone else to pay the bulk of the taxes, but not you. It never works out that way. Tax the big corporations! Sure! They make billions! They can afford it! Well, taxes paid by businesses are treated the same as any other expense. That is, they are paid out of revenue, not out of profits. The money to pay the taxes (and the employees, and the insurance, and the electric bills, and every other expense) comes from their customers. The issue should not be how the tax is collected. The issue should be the amount collected. And we in America are paying far too much.

I wonder what would happen if say a big US city, for the sake of experiment, picked a lower income street (or any street) of small businesses, and said "this street is an experimental special economic zone, where there is no minimum wage, absolute bare minimal health and safety standards in the rule books, no liscensing requirements for almost anything, and the legal paperwork required to start a business is ultra minimal, easy to do, and fast." I THINK I am not just talking about special economic zones here.

While we should take intentions into account in measuring how much to damn or praise *a person* for an action --- no such provision should be given for non-intentional objects or artifacts ... such as laws.

I disagree! It depends on what kind of work you're talking about. I do agree that unskilled workers should start small until they prove their worth given with a contract. Not everyone in the world can or are academically inclined. Work with us here, William!MUD😘
