They are "just wild animals, but caring for them when they're in your garden has an emotional element to it. Have you had to take a hedgehog into a rescue from your own garden before?

Aw, get well soon Walter! So glad you were observing him, Mike, and got him help.

Thanks, Michelle. It definitely was a good thing to still have had the camera on the little fellow.

Get well soon Walter! It’s a good job that you were there and keeping an eye on him Mike 👍

Thanks Tony. Yes, having the cameras out certainly helped, though I think there were a couple of signs I missed myself that I have learnt more about now. But he is being well taken care of and hopefully will be fully recovered soon

Oh, poor Walter! Do please keep us updated. We have a youngster from this year who is still visiting some nights, we make sure there is always food and water for him. Our local rescue told us it was ok for him not to hibernate so long as we kept feeding him. We are always relieved when we see him, we worry!!!

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, Pauline. There definitely is a connection that forms with the little visitors, and when they don't appear for a period of time, it definitely does cause the heart to skip a beat or three...! I'm glad your youngster is well looked after

Get well soon Walter! That was quite an epic swelling, looked like he had an egg in there! Hope the Hollow won’t be too quiet without its hedgehog 🦔

It will be a little odd to have a quiet garden once more after months of constant activity. Hopefully Walter recovers in a few weeks, and will be back in the Hollow and his house soon.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery Walter 🦔! Thank goodness he's got you keeping an eye on his welfare and he's getting the best care. Our little Harry hasn't been out for 3 nights now so it's looking like he's finally hibernating! 🙂🦔❤

Thank you. I am glad to hear that Harry may have finally decided to hibernate. Now it's the big wait until they wake up closer to Spring.

Fingers crossed for poor Walter! Quite odd that it appeared so quickly :o I have taken a few poorly hogs to our local sanctuary and yes they do an amazing job and deserve full support. I always donate when I take one, the food and medication isn't cheap I'm sure.

The appearance of that swelling in such a short time was really amazing and quite alarming,. But yes, the sanctuaries and rescues do amazing work and deserve all the support we can offer.

Oh what a shock to hear Walter is not well .It just goes to show how wonderful it is when you have such an interest plus a camera all things are possible and Walter will make a terrific recovery of this I'm sure .You have saved his life and with your swift action got the right people involved .That was a very nasty swelling .caring for wild animals requires a real human being .You qualify Mike ,Get well wishes across the miles to Walter in the care centre and to you who must be missing him ..Greetings from Berlin :)

Thank you for your kind words, Helena. It does show how keeping the camera out is very helpful to being able to keep an eye out, whilst not physically interfering. Only needing to actually get involved when it's absolutely necessary. I have been fortunate so far that Walter is the first hedgehog to become poorly in the garden, but at least he is now receiving good care and will be on the mend. Greetings to you in Berlin

I also have a hedgehog who won't hibernate. It comes at different times each night for its dried cat food but I worry now that it's so cold. I don't know where its nest is but it's not using the hog house under the hedge. I Hope to hear good news of Walter.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment Janice. I once had a hedgehog who completely ignored the houses I had available, and chose to hibernate under a hebe bush, covering itself in a layer of ultimate wet and cold fallen leaves - but it made it through the Winter and hibernation. Sometimes they simply choose the more rustic lifestyle I think. Walter is recovering and looking well. He has the most excellent of care, so if the weather warms, we might have him back soon.

How’s Walter?
@HedgehogsHollow4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gezzy, thanks for taking the time to check in on Walter. He is well, and is being well cared for at Brockworth Hedgehog Rescue. He has a urine infection, as well as round worm and lungworm infections, so is on antibiotics right now. Vicki posted a video of him eating on the rescue's Facebook page and whilst you can hear his breathing is affected by the lungworm, he looks well. Hopefully if the weather warms slightly and he recovers, he might be back with us again soon.
