Walter has returned to Hedgehog's Hollow after four weeks. Thank you to everyone who sent good wishes for his speedy recovery and asked about his condition. He clearly has not just made a big impression here in the garden.

It definitely has brought the life back to the bottom of the garden - and he has settled right back in to his house and routine.

Recently released a hog back into the garden that I had to rescue after appearing deformed on camera, similar to pop off syndrome except his condition was caused by trauma, he'd been caught by something, possible fox or dog. Sadly he didn't chose to stick around & disappeared, came back for some food & water t following night but then left the garden again. Got two excellent hog houses by Riverside Woodcraft in the garden, they've had the odd occupant but never for long, they're huge with plenty of room inside so hoping for more occupants soon but I'm going many nights with no visitors at all which is sad as I absolutely love having them in the garden.

It is so difficult to build the emotional connection with the wild hedgehogs and all you want is for them to choose to stay in your garden and use the home you create for them, and for whatever reason they choose not to and move on (possibly to live under a hedgehog somewhere that is less comfortable) I know the feeling of having visitors but they just move on and don't stay longer. But you're doing something wonderful for them and the fact they continue to visit is a sign they do appreciate what you're doing.

yeayyy Walter! Welcome back! He does look quite healthy and well fed :) Do you think he will still hibernate? Many greetings from your fan in Germany!
@HedgehogsHollow4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle, no, it doesn't look like he has any thoughts of hibernation - he has spent the last few nights out and about in the neighbourhood rather than sleeping for any period of time. That said, we are about to go in to a spell of quite cold nights, so it might be interesting to see what he does over the next week or so.

@@HedgehogsHollow yes, that will be interesting to see. We (here in Germany) have had a relatively cold winter, so all the hedgehogs are hibernating (I have two on my balcony and Ignatz is at our local hedgehog rescue's hibernating)... curious what Walter will do!

Great to see Walter back big and healthy! Was the swelling caused by the urine infection? (or maybe ringworm? I don't think lungworm causes swelling)
@HedgehogsHollow4 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, it was the infection. The vet that works with the rescue saw him on the day he was admitted and diagnosed the infection and he went straight on to antibiotics. But I think it was the infection.
