About two years ago, I made a decision to remove anything from my life that made me feel less than my best-starting with my wardrobe. Gone were the worn-out "slum around the house" pieces and anything that didn’t fit well. I either had items tailored, donated, sold, or gifted them to friends. In the process, I let go of more than half my closet. For the pieces I struggled to part with, I placed them in a clear storage bin labeled with its contents and a date. If I don’t use anything from the bin by that date, it gets donated-no wasting time revisiting it or overanalyzing my decision. It’s been so freeing to remove the clutter (shoes, clothes, and more), and I genuinely feel better all around. Now, my wardrobe is easy to mix and match, adding new pieces feels intentional, and I actually wear everything I own. ✨

The remainder of the items stay in my closet. I don’t feel pressure to get rid of things i truly like but didn’t wear just then and i also don’t have the get rid of regrets when I do move on from something. There's one time jeggings are still useful -- and it's not a situation you're going to see in Florida. They're evergreen in cold-winter places up north where you need pants that tuck into winter boots. Where winters are long and decent-looking warm clothing options are few, a sleek leg with a jegging, fleece legging, or slim ski-type pant tucked into a thick sock and/or a wide boot is a perennial classic. (Also prevents your pant cuffs getting wet, as happens if you wear a straight or wide leg pant over the boot in stormy weather.) If you're wondering who's still buying jeggings, it's us ladies up north who are just trying to get through the winter without dying of either frostbite or terminal fashion boredom.

Put them away in a labeled box for a few years...then take them out when they're BACK IN STYLE. So glad I ignored people who said 1- "Bootcut jeans are out" -- I kept mine, they look Good on me! and 2- "Throw out your skinny jeans" -- why? so I have to spend twice as much when they come back into fashion? Nope, I put them away for only maybe a year as I was tired of them. Now I find I want to wear them, and I Don't Have to buy them AGAIN. Yay me! Also, I did lose weight, so I use a BELT - great invention. Or I could just take them in. And if I gain some weight later, I can let them out. We have to watch our $$$ now. Things are only gonna get much, much worse
@kj7045Ай бұрын
@SandyCheeks63564 Best comment ever. You are so correct. Just box them up and wait until the come back in style. Clothes go in and out of style so fast. Then you’re just paying much more for the same clothing item.

Losing weight is one great way to push yourself to declutter and update your wardrobe. I lost 22 pounds in 2023 and have kept it off by taking the time to really enjoy my new clothes.😊 I gave away all my size 8s and bought new sizes 4s and 6s. If that waist band starts feeling even a tiny bit tight, I get busy and lose the extra pound. I love my new style, and thanks to Anna for giving me some ideas.

Perfect timing! I need to follow a one-in-one-out rule, but with the "one-ins" coming from the clean laundry. I don't "need" to buy anything. I want all my clothes and outerwear to fit in all my clothes to fit easily in my closets. I am washing some items that I wore to give them "one last chance" and as they come out of the dryer, they're going into the donation bag. I also have too many different colors of jean jackets and blazers and not enough moderate weather days to wear them. This week's Tuesday was too hot to wear a jacket and by Thursday we had 4" of snow. I have too many structured jackets that are too uncomfortable to wear inside a winter coat. This is a struggle. I did donate all trousers with less than a 29" inseam. I am over ankle pants. And it was so easy to take all my trousers out and let the tape measure do the final cut. Another criteria I am using is to let go of first layers that are too bulky. Turtlenecks must be thin and able to slide and move around under sweaters and blazers. A lot of my cotton pieces don't hang right when they're layered. And if there's too much fabric bunching up inside a blazer arm it's gotta go. This winter I will "audition" coats as a last chance. I bought two trench style (long and short) replacement coats and I need to cull some old puffy jackets. I will keep 1 or 2 waterproof puffers for those cold and rainy days. And I feel ready to get rid of nostalgia pieces like old, heavy 100% cotton jeans that don't feel good. Finally deciding to get rid of my 1981 Gloria Jeans cream colored flares (that I bought in 1981). Thanks for your Prada skirt story.

As a retiree, I have 45 years of clothing experience. There are some items you will always wear, and they do not go out of style. At the top of the list are straight-leg Levi jeans. There’s a reason Levi has been making jeans for over 100 years. Along the same line, keep your jean jacket. I have worn mine for 40 years, and it has never been out of style. If a blazer is a traditional look, and doesn’t have an ‘extra’ like big shoulder pads, pleats, fancy buttons, etc., it won’t go out of style. The colors might go n and out of style, but black, navy, brown, and camel will always be stylish. I have worn he same ‘moto’ or ‘bike’r leather jacket for 30+ years. Belts will wear out before they go out of style. Scarves go in and out of style. I keep mine knowing they are not taking up much space and it’s too expensive to replace them many times. Winter outerwear in a classic cut like a pea coat, a double-breasted long or knee length are always stylish, as are gloves, knit hats, and winter wool scarves. Formal wear will typically go in and out of style, so if you like something and it is a higher quality piece, keep it and you will find it is back in fashion, so you will save money. Amazingly, the prom dress my granddaughter wore recently is the same style I wore in the late 1970’s. Fashion is cyclical and a smart woman keeps quality pieces. An older friend who was in her 90’s in 2003 was always impeccably dressed. I would compliment her clothes or jewelry, and she would tell me the piece was 40 years old, or whisper that she had purchased it in the 1940’s. I loved her style, and her spunk.

When I change my seasons, I get rid of pieces I haven't worn or didn't feel good in..... clothing and shoes. When bringing out the current season I only bring out what will work with my current "mood." I also assess what I need new and check all shoes for damage that occurs from sitting in storage.

I use sock clips I got on Amazon. When I take my socks off, I clip them together and put them in the laundry basket. They wash and dry with the clip on, so I tend not to lose socks.

Can you have the waistband on the Gucci skirt replaced so you can tuck in a top or wear it with a body suit? It seems a bit frumpy without something fitted (like "body con" fitted) on top. If you can't bring yourself to alter it, and you're not going to wear it, maybe frame it as a piece of art and hang it somewhere. It's a really cool piece.

The "Expensive but never wear it" is a hard one for sure. I had two sweaters that I bought that I struggled with getting rid of because they just weren't working for me. Finally I took them to my local consignment store, hoping someone loved them as much as I did that actually wears them!

I never had issues with faux leather breaking down when I lived in Washington or Colorado, but it all fell apart within a couple years of moving to Florida.

Designer does not always equate with "tasteful".....that Gucci skirt was hideous.

I love your style and that skirt looks NOTHIING like you. Its time to send it out into the world.

I agree with getting rid of clothes that don’t fit right now. After I gave birth to my first born, I held onto all of my pre-baby clothes for way too long and now looking at it five years later, everything is completely outdated. I should’ve just sold or donated everything back then because even though I’ve lost most of the weight, I feel like I should get more updated items now anyway. So I love your recommendation of getting rid of it within a few months instead of waiting years.

I will say this, I have been getting rid of almost ALL of my polyester clothing since I can no longer wear synthetic materials. Even if I loved it, it had to go.

I love shopping vintage and consignment, but I have to be careful, as everyone clearing out their closet of out of style items puts a lot of them in resell shops.

Hi Anna, great tips. That Gucci skirt, if you really like, see if you can alter take off that waist. If you have good alteration lady, it can work. Well that’s how stubborn I am , to make it fit. I create projects quite needing designer skills for my alteration lady. Especially when I switched from Chanel to Old Celine. She did the most amazing job, on all of my pieces, as long as I get fabric part, if needs some inserts. I find just the right not cheap, looks like it supposed to be… only 2 pieces I left for her, and one is ah I can’t fix it’s just not good,it’s those famous Celine written waist pants😂 if you alter your Gucci , I would wear over pants, and sheer dress or skirt . But it’s too big project… you have to really love it 😜😂😝 Have a blessed day🙏❤️

Yes. Ditch the Gucci skirt. Glad I joined your channel. Love your personality and style ideas. What would you suggest I do with bridal gowns and mother of the bride gowns? They take up so much space.
