I got bussed into a posh high school where everyone else was old money. In my experience people with old money are thrifty; buy high quality, *classic* pieces; take impeccable care of them, and wear them forever. No one I grew up with had cheap/trendy pieces and/or bought multiple new pieces every season. One of my best friend's Mum had 20+ year old suits and cashmere sweaters that looked almost new and she turned heads at all the parents' events. As for Lilysilk - had to have one altered slightly and the seamstress said it was very good silk and made by someone skilled at working with silk, in her opinion.

Silk is a pain to sew. I just took three new silk items to the tailor for shortening yesterday because I hate working with silk, it takes a lot of experience to do a professional job. I do my own alterations on other fabrics.🙂

Old money in a public school?
@sparklie962 Жыл бұрын
@@susanfudge1737 haha in Canada? For sure. Loads of thrifty wealthy, old-money people don't see any reason to pay for private school when the public schools are excellent, well-funded and follow the exact same curriculum. Though to be honest, the ones in the posh neighbourhoods are greatly enhanced by having wealthy parent-advisory committees fund-raising for the latest equipment, team uniforms, extracurricular ski/travel trips etc etc. So I'm not going to try to claim that they are exactly "equal" to schools in less financially privileged areas.

I shop at thrift stores. You can find amazing pieces. Often others don’t even realize the quality is there to find. It’s a lot of fun, but you’ve gotta have a good eye and know what to look for. This video helps with that!
@drummerlovesbookworm9738 Жыл бұрын
We actually go to the thrift stores in the pricey zip codes because obviously they get the donations from the area. We find more stuff and better stuff there. A lot of the big thrift chains like Goodwill now cull their really nice things and designer pieces to sell online only, which is a shame for a nonprofit. So we prefer smaller independent charity shops. In my area, the best shop in the expensive zip code is a pet rescue thrift shop because the rich people love their dogs and horses, so the neighborhood likes to donate to them. ☺

You're bang on that the old money yacht crowd aren't wearing flowy dresses or heels like in photo shoots on board. Those items are a genuine hazard. These folks are all over the docks with massive sailing yachts where I summer (on a much smaller boat personally, lol) and the only thing that separates them from the rest of us is the size of their boat. It's a lot of Sperry boat shoes, shorts, polos, henley pullover sweatshirts, and baseball caps. One notable thing is I see ZERO holes. No intentionally distressed or ripped clothing, no tie-dye, all just very clean and classic. I also never see tank tops. Ever. My biggest tip-off, though, is if they have staff on board. You know you're probably old money when you don't even sail your own yacht.

Old money "style" cannot really be forced : you are or you are not old money. They have the right posture, the right attitude, a way to interact with other people. A few more "physical" points about being old money: always neutral or pastel colors in expensive fabrics (can wear red for an evening outfit) their clothes always look new or like new usually no short dresses or skirts (only for tennis) except for the very young but shorts are ok in the summer a lot of loafers and ballet flats (only heels to events) mostly gold jewelry but always expensive looking (18 carats gold or more) shiny hair, simple haircuts, "no make up" make up look natural looking nails or variations of red (only) nail polish. I can "smell" old money by looking at a woman even if she is dressed only in a pair of jeans and a white shirt.

I think when we're talking about "coastal grandma", "old money", "quiet luxury" or "rich mom". we're always talking about women who want to dress more quietly (dare I say modestly?), more sustainably, get off the roundabout of having to buy constantly; to actually enjoy building a wardrobe instead of behaving (and dressing) like a hyperactive teenager with more money than sense. Though that's just my opinion. 😃 Of course, the class associations these labels are a problem, but money doesn't buy class, and people who dress well don't necessarily have money, just good taste and a clear idea of their own aesthetic.

Very accurately described. I had a supervisor who’s married to a foreigner with old money. She’s always classy, not dressy; wore the same high quality shoes and handbag 5 days a week until they needed to be replaced. It is mostly her aura and posture that I noticed. She is a life long daily swimmer therefore she stands tall and lean, no slouch or bad posture ever. She is quietly smart, doesn’t say much but when she does, it’s bullseye. Trends and fast fashion she never follows; only pieces that fit her body well in quality fabric (lots of silk, wool, cotton, and linen).

When I was young. I went to school with a lot of old money. I was just a poor girl from a big family. So I didn’t try to compete with any of them. I learned to just be myself and they accepted me. I live in a small house, and was raised by a working mom. Most of the old money friends mom’s didn’t work. Their husband’s made all the money. I saw some really beautiful houses by staying with them. And they were all nice. We didn’t belong to a country club. I can tell people from old money. Then the people who are new money. They want to wear labels from designers. They want to show they have money. Old money people are more discreet. I just dress like myself. I’m not trying to impress anyone. I’m one of the no money. Because I like to buy clothes, shoes and bags. I own two designer bags. And I carry one as an everyday bag. Not because I want everyone to see it. But I just like it. It’s a crossbody and I can still fit a lot of what I need in it.

I agree, many of these so-called “Old Money” outfits are costumes. “Blair Waldorf”, whoever she was, is the inspiration always quoted. Real Old Money style is about the best-quality, timeless and restrained items. Rich people don’t want to draw a lot of attention to what they wear. These girls are getting the look all wrong, Old Money adults don’t wear schoolgirl uniforms, for one thing. For the Old Money style, focus on: 1. top-quality materials and construction; 2. classic, understated, timeless and simple styles, and 3. neutrals and basic colors like navy and khaki, no trendy 2023 neon tangerine or lime. It is essentially a very quiet look, not in your face or standing out. I live in one of the wealthiest counties in the world, so I know what this look really is.

Everybody should wear colors. Why? Just look at nature like trees, plants, flowers, fruits, veggies, northern sky for Aurora borealis. The problem with most people is lack of self esteem and awareness. So they dress desperately and cheaply to attract other people, men or women and look for praises and compliments from others. I have every color imaginable in my wardrobe. I do oil painting, knitting, love gardening, cooking and display fruits and veggies. Its a sight to behold! We are part of nature. One should wear structured and well fitted clothing, have some casual clothing and with the right attitude, one and anyone can pull off any dress in any color. BTW, this paper money is recent in the 20th century. Before that, people would use gold and silver coins(yellow), different gems in trade or even to buy things!!! So, let's not disrespect colors and enjoy life in all myriad forms and colors😂

The old money vibe is most evident in modest dress, "buttoned-up" being more than just an expression, with the crew neckline most reliable, long sleeves, midi skirt lengths, and the omnipresent pearls, single strand, fine gold clasp. Nouveau riche, or newly rich money, tends to be the lower neckline, midriffs, wherever the exposed skin exposes the financial standing. This is my observation.

Old Money Style is definitely an aesthetic, but ultimately the key to being accepted as “old money” rather than nouveau riche is. . . having old money. Growing up in this ethos is (IMO) essential to its ultimate believability. I am definitely not of that group but have had the dubious “honor” of seeing some exemplars up close, and-making a huge generalization, as there are always exceptions-I found that world the opposite of aspirational in every way except the fact of having no financial worries. Love the video, ideas and clothes ! Agree with all and many comments, with the exception of the cute peuple / lavender dress. Don’t give the old money vibe, though you look fabulous in it

I guess I’m just really “middle class.” At this point in my life, I’m good with that.

Old money makes sure that every piece they wear is clean and mended. Ah yes, mending...I am from UK and there is no problem in patching or repairing clothes - or even remodelling good clothes. There are two big giveaways you are not 'old money' - not having clean and polished (or brushed) shoes and not have clean manicured short fingernails.

Especially short nails, clean and polish-free.

Im from Boston and we mend also; I can’t understand why someone wouldn’t re-heel their leather shoes or darn a moth hole in a cashmere sweater.

@@sarahterry2140 Totally agree, Sarah, there is nothing wrong with mending/repairing. The mindset of 'old money' is to buy quality and look after what you have, rather than buy cheap and 'fashionable' clothes.
