Mr. Sorrels’ videos got me interested in knife making when I was about 11-12 ish. I watched ALL of them back then, loved the simple and informative format to the videos. I built myself a workshop from nothing over a few years and developed a passion for the craft. I ended up moving more towards the forging side of making knives and tools and then focused on small ornamental ironworks and made less knives. I’m in college now and don’t have much time to work there anymore, but I’ll always remember and love those years of adventuring and learning in blacksmithing. When I saw this video pop up, I had to watch. That little intro song brought me back. Thank you, sir.

I built a whole knife shop on small budget. It took me a few years and is always evolving. I learned something, the best tool is the one you have (or can afford). Sad but true, like in life we have to work with what we got, not with what we don't. Keep knife making y'all.Thank you Walter. I learned a lot from your vids. Your are in my top 3 YT knife makers.

I have both types of calipers & have migrated to the electronic calipers for dusty environments. It is difficult to shield the dust & grit from the gear sets in real dial calipers. It's best to turn them face down you are in a dusty environment. The cheap harbor freight calipers are more dust resistant, but also have their limits in terms of dust. The electronic calipers can easily be disassembled & cleaned. The battery doors fall off in time, wrap those areas with tape to secure the doors.

The low cost digital calipers typically only turn off the display, not the electronics. The batteries are cheap when you buy them by the sheet, but having them die every few months is a real pain. Some folks take the battery out when they aren't using them, but that just seems to be a pain in the butt. If there is no need to hop back and forth between metric and imperial dial calipers work very well, even the moderately priced ones are nice and smooth. The low end dial calipers tend to come out of the box a bit crunchy, but they can usually be made to work smoothly with a wee bit of time.

Guys if you want some calipers hit estate sales. I went to one and got a almost perfect brown and sharp caliber for like 10 bucks. Maybe it was 12. Point being it had a little bitty bit of scratches on the face but nothing that kept you from reading it, and it was absolutely dead on still and had the box and everything. Most of the people selling at those estate sales, they either don't know what it is or they don't really care to go to the trouble to try to put it on eBay and get top dollar, so you can really score there..

I've got some rough cut walnut that has been sitting in my basement for about 3 years now. It should make some really nice scales and scabbards.

Yeah, I figured out the battery calipers were a bad deal years back and looked for mechanical options. You should also consider vernier calipers for more rugged use than the dial calipers. Just match the tick lines up and there's the reading.

Vernier calipers are good but they're not as accurate as the digital or dial calipers. I like to read down to .001 of an inch that's pretty hard to do with a vernier caliper, and my eyes accuratly. That being said, my eyes aren't as good as it used to be and it's easier to let the caliper do the measuring to a read out that i can see in an insant. Other than that you're.

I like dial calipers because I can stick a piece of clear tape on the face, and mark my target thickness right there, so I don't actually have to read - just match. Very useful, as the work I do never needs precision to the tenth. BTW, I think I have been watching this channel since you were the "Japanese sword guy" . What, maybe 2010?

That fixed blade pocket knife is illegal in Maryland. It's a stupid law, but I've seen it enforced. I wonder if other states have this law. It's considered a concealed weapon for some reason. It doesn't make sense, but it's there.
