I have noticed on all Walther reviews, none of you guys have ever talked about the heart of the gun. So here ya go. I'm one of the guys that make this step barrel in the Fort Smith Plant. There is a lot of detail that goes into this barrel and it is unnoticed to the public. It has over a 105 tight dimensions that has to be checked 100% every 5 parts on a CMM machine. The chamber machine work has to be checked 100% on every part. I don't know about other gun manufactures, but I can tell you from hands on this is the best barrel you can get in a gun.

I've watched a ton of reviews on the PDP over 6 months ago before I bought my pistol and I've watched a bunch since and you're right. I have not heard anything about the barrel. Good to know man thanks. I love my pdp. It's my first pistol and since then I've shot a whole bunch of them and none of them feel so good.

@@JimmyLuffjr Well then perhaps a question you can answer; what do you think of the folks changing the weight of the recoil spring? Good idea or better not to mess with it because of something I may not yet understand? Thinking for competition rounds, not hollows. Also my barrel is noticeably awesome, thanks for your hard work.

Thank you! I am older (70) and have only recently (in the last two years - can you guess why?) become a firearm owner. Upon a recommendation (and without trying it first) I purchased a polymer PDP Compact 4". I love it! I have taken a concealed carry course and a basic shooting course at my local gun shop/range where I purchased my Walther. The instructor there is very experienced and knowledgeable but, he is a total Glock fan boy and spends as much time trying to sell you on the virtues of Glock (EVERY police department in world and maybe other planets use Glocks). No doubt they are fine firearms and are worthy of their reputation but, they are not perfect (no handgun is). I don't engage with him due to my inexperience but, I have watched SO many reviews of the PDP and every single one of them (like YOURS) has only raved about the trigger and ergonomics! Always reinforces my feeling that I made the right choice. Now, I am not a big guy (other than around the waist! lol!) so the PDP was going to be an awkward carry gun, so I purchased a Shield9 Plus OR to carry and am happy with that choice. Since then I have purchased a Walther PPQ M2 22lr for range plinking and working on my technique. I have a long way to go in this journey but, find that people like you and your videos (and I am now following you on Rumble!) provide a lot of great information. Thank you for your service. I too am a veteran. US Navy submarine vet 73-79.

Glocks are the MOPAR cars of handguns. I EDC my Walther PDP but my home defense is based around Glock's compatibility. If you've ever seen what it's like in a city 5-6days after a storm, no power and minimal cell signal, you'd understand wanting to stage a firearm in various locations of your home. Extar's EP9, PSA's Dagger and my G19 allow me to run a single platform with no stress about remembering what magazine goes with which firearm at 3am That being said, I much prefer the feel of my PDP. It's a better grip, excellent trigger and a better magwell out of the box. The PDP is not necessarily the "better" gun but it's alot more comfortable to shoot.

@@dougt5357 EP9 is a blast to shoot but there's a roller delayed option coming to the States in 2H 2024 for the same price that also runs Glock mags. I saw it at IWA, middle-eastern company... @@clorofenol the 4inch shoots shockingly flat and you barely feel the recoil. They both shoot very similar to high end equal barrel length 2011’s. Of course the 5” match shouts slightly better but the 4” shoots better than any Glock or other striker fired pistol I’ve shot.

Great review. To add... Pdp like the ppq come with the stepped chamber. The guard around the magazine release is great. Keeps you from accidently palming the magazine out or driving the magazine release into your opposite hand ,keeping the magazine from releasing. I'd never heard of the PDP, walked in a gun shop I go to all the time down the street 3? years ago, saw the Walther PDP and bought it because It's James Bond's brand and it looked pretty cool. Love it, shoot it all the time, and it's accurate as hell even for my average abilities. Wife just got me the long slide PDP for my birthday. Looking forward to that one. Have lots of cool pistols, cheap ones, way more expensive ones, but I shoot my PDP 70% and the CZ 75 SP-01 20% and the rest I shoot off and on. PDP shoots great with optic, without optic, cheap ammo, more expensive ammo, just shoots nice.

I’ll say it. These triggers are the best trigger on a striker fired pistol hands down. I’m a Glock guy and have used Glocks for over 20 years in duty and a competitive capacity. Walther has always been up there near the top. The PPQ was The First Striker Fired Pistol to have a Fully Cocked firing pin. But they got it down right so you dont have to worry about them going off in holster or when dropped. The glock and alot of others have a partially cocked firing pin so when you pull the trigger you finish cocking it. They replaced the PPQ cause it was not OR. The PDP improves on everything, OR, grip, texture, etc., but no more 45acp.

I have an M&P and a Glock 45 MOS. I love the M&P, but as a leftie I hate the slide release. Also, that trigger is awful and my job doesn't let us modify triggers. I used to hate Glocks but that 45 is so nice, especially with the dot. One of my supervisors picked up the PDP after they told him he couldn't use his P320 and after he let me handle it, my next pistol will definitely be a PDP.

Correction (23:49) The Dynamic Performance Trigger ($179.00) is not available for the PDP F models. They also now have a PDP Pro-E model which is the same as the PDP Pro SD model except for the threaded barrel. The Pro-E has the mag well and Dynamic Performance Trigger but not a threaded barrel. Also, the Pro SD models (both Compact and Full Size) use the 18 round mags. The regular PDP models use different mags. The PDP compact uses a 15 round mag and will not take the 18 round mags. Use of the 18 rd mags in the compact models will damage the extractor. The PDP Full size use the 18 rd mags. The lips on the top of the 15 & 18 rd mags are slightly different on each mag.

They have polymer line for that but IMO none of the PDP line is really a ccw centric handgun. They’re fine, like any full size/compact for OWB but like every double stack, it’s not gonna carry comfortably IWB. So if you’re going OWB and you’re concerned with weight, go with a compact 3.5 or 4” polymer. There’s no advantage of aluminum over polymer. The fight difference isnt enough to matter and there’s no other advantage of an aluminum gun. If you’re going with steel, you want the weight and mitigating recoil is the primary goal.

My biggest gripe is my 5 inch has the 1.0 optic cut that really sucks. No matter what I do my optic comes loose even with blue lock tight. The PDPs are nice, now adopted from the german special forces KSK, the battle divers and the military police. Of course the polymer version in all FDE color with SD 5.1 barrel (4.5 slide) and Acro P2 Aimpoint, also in FDE. There is also a compact version in all grey without SD barrel with grey aimpoint. Here's a weird PDP fact I figured out last night. I mess with my pistols when wife and kids go to bed because I'm old and I don't know how to work on cars or do any woodwork at all. I like Canik pistols quite a bit as well. I can take the Canik TP9-SFX slide and put it on the Walther PDP 5" grip and vice versa. Also Canik Mags work in the PDP and vice versa. Recoil springs largely identical. Not sure why anyone would swap the slides other than for fun or to see which barrel shoots better all things being equal but it's kind of interesting. I think it works with the Rival but I don't have one of those so who knows. Doesn't work on the Mete.

Love the PDP. It is my EDC. Only issue is absolutely ZERO distribution when it comes to OEM parts. Why are OEM parts hard to find and out of stock? I like to source parts to stock. It took 3 months for walther to stock up on 4 inch barrel which i was looking for sometime last year. I cant find their trigger return spring anywhere. Their slide lock is out of stock and ive been checking for 2 months now. I've heard of aome guy named Earls but only way you find him is word of mouth bevause when you type in the part you're looking for on google, he doesn't show up as a search result. This is the only reason i might go back to my M&P 2.0.

I'm not trying to be critical (I have a 4" Compact) but, have you put 15k rounds through your Walther that you are already looking for replacement parts (slide lock?)? I hear you about the 'stocking' issue. I get e-mails from Walther all the time and when I go to look for some item I might want it is 'out of stock' (normally spare magazines).

Late to the video but i noticed online the specs for the 4.5 steel and 5.0 steel are the same but the pictures look vastly different (looking at the trigger mostly), any idea if the 4.5 carrys the same trigger as the 5.0 or if its closer to how the 4.0 is? If so 5.0 is where my moneys going, thanks ahead of time

I got one when they first came out I had no designated range target pistol and I have 4 other walther pistols my pdp is a full size at the time the longest barrel was the 4.5 so there was one available I never had such good groupings as close as and inch apart the trigger was the curved one right out of the box I saw no reason to replace it I eventually got a threaded barrel I have a 45acp can that fires everything from that down the barrel was factory so it set me back a few bucks I haven't made the jump to red dots yet so I purchased a set of suppressor height iton sights to see over my can they work great they even have a large tritium insert in the front 2 smaller in back brightest I've ever bought I wish sometimes I waited fot the pro with 🎉all the mods on it for the price of my threaded barrel I could of gotten all of this stuff for what my pistol cost but I had know idea they would be comming out with these upgrades and it's stupid at this point to sell one and buy another plus I'm quite happy with mine it works well with all types of ammo.

So of course, Safariland doesn’t make a duty holster for the 5” match full steel frame.. My question is, can you put the magwell from this one to the 4.5 frame?? Can you get this part separately? Also, can you build one of these into the configuration like a Glock 19X? Shorter slide-full sized grip without the overhang of the dust cover

Gonna throw my two cents in I bought the PDP full size 4 1/2 inch after watching reviews and everybody ranting and raving about it. Was anxious to get it home and throw my optic of choice on it and start shooting but turns out I have to wait to get an adapter plate mailed to me. And to be honest my Springfield Echelon is better in every way minus the trigger although even though the walther is a little better trigger I like that the Echelon is a trigger pack and modular so I can swap frames and such. I like the slide serrations on the Echelon better the grip texture is better and it will take just about every optic made with no plate out of the box! I’m not saying the PDP is not a really nice gun it’s just a little over hyped. Was very disappointed with having to mail away for a plate the reviews I watched said it came with plates and to top it off when ordering I screwed up on the form and ordered the wrong totally on me but I immediately called customer service to see if I could get them to change the order and sat on hold for 40 minutes only to get transferred to a survey asking if my problem was solved without ever talking to a person! Tried calling back next day this time left my number to get a call back and still waiting. So yea I’m gonna say customer service and support is a big negative.

Honestly your comments indicate more of a personal preference and subjective measures. Those are very real and are important but impossible to objectively assess. With every gear review I try very hard to maintain objectivity and not focus on personal preferences as it’s not fair to the product nor is it fair to project my preferences onto other people. That is a formula for disaster and a loss of credibility. I personally hate the ergos of Glocks, the way they look and several other characteristics/features like their sites. That said, it’s a quality gun that probably has the best reliability and hard use track record around. They have the most simple mechanics and are the AK47 of the handgun world. There’s also a LOT of what I would consider fair and honest negative reviews of the Echelon (I haven’t tested or even shot one)… Point being, don’t conflate objective performance and features with personal preference. Thanks for sharing and watching! -Gary

And buy the way I ended up getting the holosun scs and I don’t know what you were seeing but mine works great and the auto brightness works great. If the battery lasts like they say it will then I would say it’s a great optic.

Funny. They're amazing. Fact Glock, out the box, you call an 8.5 I really need to see that slide rule in your pocket. I have probably 30 of them. The best, a Gen2 31 I carried 20 years, I'd give a 7 vs a 9 for the P229 Elite I carried as a backup. M&P, even 2.0, is maybe a 7.25. And yes, Canik beats them both, right outta the box

Sure, I guess those numbers make sense if you factor out a long track record of hard use and reliability, countless aftermarket accessories. I think there’s always going to a gap in opinion of those that have experience with firearms operationally in extreme conditions and those that just carry them around all the time with an occasional qualification. It’s all subjective. I worked for an agency that the 229 was the issued duty weapon. Nothing but problems. Incessant malfunctions, guns breaking etc… and when that agency switched to Glocks their qualification pass rate on the first attempt increased by something like 28%. 🤷‍♂️

Any recommendations on a mid-height BUIS for lower 1/3 co-witness or lower on a full size PDP with a factory RMR/SRO plate? The problem is that while the optic-cut is very low and deep into the slide (nice) the factory irons are way too low (disappointing) and are not visible with any red dot optic at all, except for SCS, which is the only direct mount without an adapter plate. I don’t like the ones on Walther’s website (due to being blacked out) and they don’t give the specs/dimensions for HEIGHT, only width on the website. I called Walther, they don’t know their own specs for height because they said the taller sights they sell are 3rd party made in Germany. 🤷‍♂️ Hoping for AmeriGlo’s. TIA🙏🏻

Co-witness iron sights. For 90% of optics, by the time you add the adapter plate it makes the irons useless. You need to buy suppressor height sights for them to co-witness. Fix that, and it’d be a 10.

That depends. For a gun I’m primarily using for self defense or CCW, I think an enclosed emitter is critical. An enclosed emitter is a significant upgrade in durability, reliability, and will prevent rain, mud, blood, or other things from blocking your emitter or sight picture. For a range gun, competition… etc. it’s a really good optic. I’d also look at the Holosun 507Comp for a comparable optic with a lot more features and significantly cheaper. It’s what I’m running on my PDP 5 Steel Frame now.

Manual safeties for defensive pistols are a terrible idea. Just because you “grew up” on something doesn’t mean it’s right and you shouldn’t evolve or adapt based on better data and lessons learned. If the lack of a manual safety concerns you, you need more training and more exposure to professionals that don’t promote antiquated ideas.
