The Walther WMP is a full sized pistol with a 15+1 mag capacity that is chambered in 22 Magnum. It's light recoil and easy to rack slide make it a great handgun for those who are recoil sensitive but it's also a blast to shoot. The fireball coming out the end of the barrel is spectacular!

I've a 6 inch Auto Mag. Keep it clean and it will shoot anything! And it's the coolest looking gun ever, super accurate and fun to shoot. Got it used at a local shop for under $300. Because the guy thought something was wrong with it , i new it just needed cleaning and good ammo. It's a keeper. Good show thanks.

If I remember right, the kinetic energy of a .22 mag is similar to a .38 special. In a modern JHP load, I would imagine this is a serious self-defense round, especially with the large magazine size and quick followup shot time. a .22 mag double-tap is probably a lot more effective than a single .38 special. And you have 16 shots instead of 5 or 6.

I mean, in terms of energy foot pounds, .38 has alot more. And greater diameter. But as heavy as this gun is, my j frame is 22oz and holds 5 .357 mag rounds. So 22 mag might be great. However that fact it's a rimfire, semiauto means it has alot more chances for malfunctions

That comparison is a .22 Magnum rifle versus a .38 Special revolver or 9mm pistol, but the WMP is still a great pistol. It's comparable with .22 LR out of a 16" rifle. I love my suppressed 14" .22 WMR rifles.

Another choice for semi-auto 22 mag is the Grendel Inc. P30. The grandfather to the Keltec PMR30. The P30 was designed by George Kellgren, the owner of Keltec, while working at Grendel Inc. I have both PMR30 and the P30 both use a 30 round mag. I really enjoy shooting both firearms but, parts for the P30 are hard to find so I don't shoot it as much as I do the PMR30. Great review of the Walther WMP. I might have to look into getting me one as I love shooting the .22 magnum more than I do any of the other calibers I have. I also own a 22 magnum semi auto rifle and a bolt action rifle. Would love to see Walther bring out a semi-auto rifle using these mags also in it.

About three years ago I started getting into 22WMR and wanted to have the full suite with a lever action rifle, a semi automatic rifle, a bolt action rifle, a revolver, and a semi automatic pistol. For the lever action I bought a Henry; smooth as silk and no problems whatsoever. So far so good and then I bought a Ruger Talo bolt action rifle: beautiful stainless steel and accurate as all hell. The first semi automatic 22WMR rifle I bought was the Savage A22 which couldn't get through a full magazine without a jam; I sent it back to the factory and to their credit they fixed it but by then I became disenchanted with it. Call me picky but I expect a brand new firearm to function flawlessly and have found that altogether too many do not. I then bought a CZ 512; hallelujah, it cycled flawlessly. For the revolver I got a RIA/ALFA. Th came the choice of a semi automatic pistol which got a bit more frustrating. The first 22WMR pistol I bought was the RIA XT which turned out to be one of the worst jam-o-matics I've ever owned. I sent it back to the factory in Pahrump, Nevada twice to no avail so I brokered a deal with them to simply trade for the ALFA revolver. I then bought a PMR 30 which out of the box would jam even with premium ammo but after some tinkering and a few replacement parts from M.Carbo I was able to get it to cycle well; it shot very accurately but wound up trading it out for something else. When the WMP became available the siren's call of a 22 Magnum pistol hit me again and I bought one. Of all the 22WMR pistols that I owned the Walther was by far the best right out of the box. The multiple mag releases are really cool and after a thousand or so rounds I have yet to have any FTF or FTE's. Way to go Walther!

Fun post to read. I grew up learning how to shoot with 22 wmr bolts and revolvers. Dad was a huge fan and left me many hundreds of rounds that joined my own stash. Like you, I'm collecting a suite of 22 wmr. I'm most enamored with my Ruger combo of stainless 18" American bolt and 3" LCR. I had the A22 but became quicky soured on it. But I love my Savage 42 model in wmr, paired with a PMR30. Next purchase, S&W's new M&P in 22 wmr.

@daryleman5325

That's not the problem. It's the shape of the cartridge and rimfire design that makes it difficult. With a center fire the edges of the cartridge takes the pressure of loading the round. To much pressure pressing on a rimfire while loading the round could be a major problem.

Walther WMP came from the Walther PPX/Creed. There may not be anything officially from Walther confirming this, but having owned a Walther Creed, the frame internals are almost identical, and the slide design is conceptually the same. The Walther Creed disproves the bore axis myth. It has a very high bore axis but it shot unbelievably flat because of how light the slide was. I always said it felt like you were shooting a sofa. Because it is a hammer fired pistol, it does not require striker springs which lessens weight towards the rear of the slide, making it a flatter shooting pistol.

I am going to be using it for pest control on the golf course where I work. I have been using a 22 rifle, but I want something more compact that I can also carry all day. I am using 22s because of the sound level. We have people that live around the course and we prefer not top wake them up at 3am when we shoot an armadillo. I have both, a WMP and a PMR30. PMR 30 is lighter, nicer trigger, 30 rd capacity (not easy to load to 30), fairly reliable but picky on ammo. WMP is bigger and heavier, optics ready 👍, 15 rd capacity (super easy to load), more reliable and handles broader range of ammo. I like both, but I trust the WMP more. The PMR30 has been good shooting Hornady Critical Defense 45 gr, but not 100%, I've had a handful of malfunctions in the 500+ I've put thru it. The WMP has been 100% reliable so far. I was able to get 500 rds of Federal Premium Speer TNT's, 30 gr, for under $10/box of 50. Super price, but was worried about the light bullet, they've been 100% in the WMP, but I have less than 100 rds of them thru it. IMO, both fun range guns, personally I wouldn't trust a rimfire for self defense, again, my opinion only, so either would be fine for plinking and varmits. I prefer the WMP, less issues and I like the ease of loading the mags, plus optics ready is a big deal to me!

My mom got one of these a few weeks ago. She hasn't shot it a lot, but likes it so far. I wish they could get a few more rounds in it. I have a psa rock on the way, we will have to shoot them side by side.

A 6.5" barrel .22 Magnum is supposed to have a muzzle velocity of 1480 fps. This pistol should exhibit a muzzle velocity of Approximately 1250 - 1300 fps. The velocity given by the author is for a rifle length barrel.

I caught that too, I was told today 1400 to 1600 with 22 mag depending on bullet. And the 5.7 being at 2000fps from the pistols.

@elmo1639 Жыл бұрын
Not many 5.7 comparisons here in the comments. With a few brands now making pistols in 5.7 I figured Walther made this magnum 22 in response. One thing that's already visible, the grip isn't over bloated like the 5.7 models.

Great review! With follow-up shots, 22 mag simply outperforms every other caliber . You’ll be back on target quicker, be more accurate, and maintain higher accuracy throughout the mag. Add super capacity and lightweight ammo to that and no center fire sidearm will come close to keeping up with the 22 mag.

As much as I love my WMP, I can't figure why Walther made it so honkin' HUGE given the caliber it's firing. The WMP is even larger than the full-sized 4" Walther PDP! Finding holsters to fit this thing has been darn near impossible, leaving your choices with either a semi-universal holster (even then, options are limited) or getting a custom-made holster (usually very expensive).

I bought a 1791 Gunleather paddle holster for my WMP and it fits perfectly. Around $60. It even accomodates the pistol with a red dot mounted on it.

I took mine out today and noticed an issue maybe you guys could help with. I was firing CCI Maxi Mag 1875 fps FMJ rounds. The first 2 magazine loads were just fine, no issues. Then...after every single round, it would dry fire on the next round. If I racked the slide again it would fire. Perhaps it wasn't seating the round properly? I cleaned it when I first got it and again after this range trip. Other than that, I love the gun. It's extremely accurate and fun to shoot.

Great review. I’m still debating if I’m gonna pull the trigger on a 22 mag for plinking. It’s more expensive than 22Lr little cheaper than 9 in some places it’s more than 9. Trying to justify the cost for something that will be a range toy. If I do decide to go with a 22 mag it will definitely be the Walther WMP

*So smart to give the old dogs their button mag release, and us new school ergo advantageous guys, their dynamically effective paddle release.* *Now implement that dynamic in all Walther pistols, that should make everyone happy.* *I wish they would have shaved off that back bottom corner of the grip, to match the PPQ M1, so as to give less ability of printing while concealed.* *And also wish they would offer a more trimmed down slide version, for all of us who are not part of the Red Dot Fad.* (call the Red Dot capable one "Target", and the one without "Defense".* *Thanks for the cool review, ya, it's definitely a Walther EZ, I like it.
