I am loving this novel and enjoyed your take on it. So wish it had been shortlisted as the author's voice is one we all need to hear right now, not mention that he is a talented author.

This was my experience with this book. I also have never read There There. But i felt it's weight. Thanks for shouting out The Bee Sting.

Given what you said about the structure, I kind of wish I left There There until after. It’s such an abrupt change, and although it was useful to have the context of There There, it did mean I started that second part being like ‘oh right, we’re after the powwow now.’ Nailed it again as always, king.

Also, this book feels like a more mature piece of writing, I think. I found There There a little bit like a series of writing exercises.

without a "huge book" on the Longlist this year, i decided to read There There before this book. i kinda wish i didnt after listening to your thoughts -- i feel like this book isn't as good as There There, which is so funny because you found power in not knowing what happens. to see my immediate surroundings (sf bay/oakland) so vividly portrayed on the Booker Longlist is wild. the bit about "the mormon temple that looks like disneyland" was an inside joke between me and my bf, or so i thought lmao

Wish I’d seen this before reading There, There which I found slightly better than average 🙈 Looking forward to this all the same, especially after your review.

Hmm, I've pretty much given up on the long list, but I still have Wandering Stars in My stack of library books. Maybe I'll give it a go before it's due.

Good review. I’ve gotten through about half of the list, but not to this one yet. I remember enjoying There, There, but it’s been so long ago that I don’t really remember it in excruciating detail. Thank you for unintentionally answering my question about whether I should reread There, There first though. I look forward to breaking up the list a bit as so far the ones I’ve read have been a bit of a slog (with the exception of James which I read prior to the Longlist).

I'm about 50 pages from the end of Wandering Stars. I actually like the contemporary part better but I agree with you about the strength of the structure.

I'm going to read him because I saw that he gave a blurb for Leave Society by Tao Lin

I started There There but couldn't get too far. It seemed that Orange was writing the type of prose he learned to write at a writers' retreat. He writes for other writers. Read Morgan Talty instead.
