On any given motorhome tour, you're going to have issues. Some are silly niggles, some are frustrating and some are huge problems (try to avoid those!)
Whilst we didn't have a huge problem (thankfully!), getting kicked out of a campsite on the NC500 (after being told I could stay) and forced to drive the motorhome in storm-force winds was definitely a challenge for my confidence! I was pretty scared as I headed out, especially as this stretch of the North Coast 500 is quite exposed and the roads are pretty small, especially if you're driving a motorhome!
Thankfully, it ended with me finding one of my favourite motorhome park-ups of the entire NC500 route! Such a great stopover- would definitely use it again.
If you'd like to see the places mentioned along the NC500 route, and the campsite I stayed with my motorhome, you can see it here: www.wandering-...

ABOUT WANDERING BIRD
In 2018, I quit my job as an air traffic controller to travel in a van. That's adulting, right?
Since then, I've spent most of my time living in a motorhome, touring the UK and Europe, sometimes with my husband, sometimes with my daughter and sometimes enjoying solo female vanlife (well, with my dog, Mac!)
Wandering Bird was created to help motorhomers and campervanners make the most of their time on the road.
We share weekly tips, tricks and reviews to encourage and inspire your next adventure, whether you're a complete motorhoming beginner, or a more experienced owner looking for new ideas or places to visit.

We stopped at Sango Sands for one night in June and had no problems at all. Staff were helpful too. Would not hesitate to revisit again when we're return.

That campsite is in a great location, but the facilities are basic for the price they charge. They’ve put in more pitches but have not upgraded the shower block despite the extra revenues. I’d recommend people avoid staying there

How rude of them in the site, they could have maybe offered you to drive somewhere else on the site to pack your van away. No wonder it left a sour taste real shame 😢 loved the salmon jumping and that site with the electric and waste empty was brill !! Brave lady driving in all that bad weather, I hate the high winds they scare me!! Mark’s always calm as a cucumber but not me !! 😅😂 great scenery and great Vlog xxx

Book campsites in advance - it gets very busy especially on the west coast section... If you have time take the ferry to the Orkney Islands - far more interesting than the NC500 actually!!

In my opinion, if you're doing the complete NC500 route I would do it anti-clockwise as the east side is a bit disappointing compared to the west. Only my opinion of course.

2-3 day drive from Portsmouth (Waterlooville). My advice is leave around 2:30 am and get the bulk of the miles out of the way. I think it's 1600 miles in all. We did 1800 with a bit of running around and Skye. Strangest thing, bumped into a lad in Thurso campsite who lives in my road! As others say, book in advance. It's well crowded with people not knowing what they are doing too.

They definitely broke their contract at that place! It looks great out there, he said, on oxygen, waiting for the blood thinners to kick in. I would love to be there, thanks for taking me!

That campsite has a reputation for bad customer service. They know they have a great location with good facilities and seem to think that as they are always booked up, they don't need to put any effort in. I would never use them again.

We stayed there later in the year than you and the guy has complete lack of PR skills! Wasn't a good vibe I got either which is a shame because the site location is stunning. There must be other folk they treat this way, it's just not seen by loads of folk on KZbin! They've totally shot themselves in the foot there...! (But thanks for being honest and having the balls to call them out!) Unfortunately, I think the demand outstrips supply up there since the NC500 has been promoted, so it will be packed most of the summer, but absolutely no need for rudeness!! We will also be looking for an alternative next time!!! They seem to have made recent upgrades to the site but we still had to wait 20 mins for 5 other vans to do greywater disposal and get water on board...we went during low season, I imagine high season is absolutely MENTAL and I can see how the locals would get TOTALLY cheesed off with so many visitors and single track roads. Xx

We went to Sango Sands two summers ago and got a very rude response from receptionist - "no we are fully booked, can't you read the sign?" OK so there was a sign but I just thought I'd check. I will never go there again. NC500 is great until you hit the west coast and then it is awful. Much better to 'stay north' - wish we had extended our stay on Orkney Islands instead - far nicer and friendlier than the west.

Very bad of that campsite to shove you off like that, expecting you to go immediately as well, no people skills or patience! Great second stop and free as well, good to know. I’d of been rubbish as the hoop game as well, without holding a camera. Hope Mr WB is ok, will you always be travelling on your own now.

Completely out of order on a number of counts: a contract is a contract, written or otherwise and they simply broke it, - so any and all of their claims are invalid, and secondly they required you to do something that is unsafe - driving a van onto the road when it is not suitably prepared, and thirdly they required you to drive into unsafe conditions that were the reason for the original contract. We do all need to know where this place is so that we are not put into such an unsafe situation..... not everyone has the (personal and other) resources that you have.
