Wanderings

After surviving 30 years of war and being refugees for 15 years, 380 000 Cambodians were repatriated in 1992 to their homeland from the Thai borders refugee camps. Some of them were resettled in villages built for them by the United Nations.
How can a society rebuild itself after such a traumatic scattering ? Those who never left were suspicious and saw the massive arrival of these exiled families as a threat to their land and equilibrium. The villagers gave to these former refugees a nickname still used today: The wanderers.
In a world of 26 millions of displaced people, the Wanderers try in their own way - slowly but surely - to survive and to reintegrate while fighting for their children’s future. This film is a tribute to their resiliency.

As a Cambodian's refugee, watching this documentary reminded me how lucky I am to have the opportunity to come to live in the U.S. and our family didn't have to go back to Cambodia like these people. I couldn't imagine the suffering, having escaped to the refugee camps in Thailand and had to go back to the native country to find out that they don't have homes and not accepted by our own people.

It’s the same with my late mom, whom passed away 2 years ago. She was the only surviving members out of her 9 siblings and she was the 5th child. When I asked about what happened, she weeps in sorrow with painful memory and wouldn’t say anything. It broke my heart that I never asked her again. I wish and I truly hope I was able heard her story so I can pass on this event that she lived through to my own family and future generation what had happened. Now it’s just a faded memory.

First, I like to say thank you for sharing. This is an amazing documentary. I lived through Pol Pot regime and know what hell feel like. Also, I lived in Khao I Dang, Sakeo II and other camps in Thailand as well. Luckily, our family moved to Philippines for 9 months before a finally destination to the US. It is very sad to see Khmer people suffered, tortured, died injustice, poor and so on. These will be always in my mind and questioning myself, why Cambodia? what happen? Can we make lives better and be good to each? What's the cause? and so on.... Once again thanks for sharing these amazing videos.

As a former K. I .D refugee, after watching this documentary, I feel blessed that I didn’t have to return to Cambodia. We probably were last family to leave the camp for the third Country, just in nixed of time, because we had no sponsor and we didn’t know how to apply for asylum to the third country, I could have easily be one of them. These people are the one who find peace for Cambodia today, not Hun Sen! Without them, there were no Paris’s Peace Agreement and without Paris’s Peace Agreement, there are no peace in Cambodia. Because of them, the United Nations had to forced a peace settlement in Cambodia, hinted the Paris’s Peace Agreement! The United Nations dump them there with inadequate support so West could wash their hands clean and walked away. And instead of the Local Cambodians saying thank you to them, they’re looked down upon. I could feel their pains. it’s a tragedy!

Powerful documentary indeed. This is like my wife and her families journey. Only difference is.....they make it to the states. I feel so sorry for these people that got left behind. Zero You , lack of education of a so called leader in our nation isn’t doing anything to better the nation either. The current regime is the same as the previous because what most of Khmer doesn’t realize is that Hun Sen is the Number Three man in charge the Khmer Rouge he made a deal with Youn that if Youn wants Khmer that won’t be an issue. Hun Sen wanted to be Prime Minister of Khmer he switched from Number three man of Khmer Rouge to the liberator for Khmer because Youn allowed him to be. Hun Sen’s wife is Youn and served in the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) part of Viet Cong. His so called so Hun Manet is not his biological son, his wife was married to a NVA soldier. He’s was a captain who was killed during the war with Americans. The reason why Youn invaded Khmer was because under Hun Sen’s plans. Hunsen lead a company of Khmer Rouge into So called Vietnam but hind site it was Khmer Krom. He ordered his men to kill Khmer Krom that gave a good reason for Youn to invade Khmer. Youn didn’t do out of kindness. They did it for their own benefits. They knew Hun Sen is power hunger so that how the whole “Youn liberated Khmer” which is why most Youn says that they saved Khmer from Khmer Rouge. Under Geneva Conventions, this looks great because Youn justifies the costs of why they invaded Khmer. Now Khmer is completely under Youn controls. It’s the same goes with Laos, Youn has its grip on Laos as well. Hun Sen is Youn’s puppet. This is not taught in Khmer history books. I found these out when I was serving in the US Army and read the US military transcriptions about Southeast Asian Indoctrination. The same goes with why The US invaded Youn, they didn’t go there to try to save South Vietnam, The US got bought with lies by The Australians who were drilling for oil in the Gulf of Tonkin which now China is drilling that area at this very moment. The Australians told the Americans they could drill for oil off the Gulf of Tonkin. It was the Australians who invaded Youn first not the US. But the Australians knew that the US desperately needed oil for its gas guzzler automobiles during the 60s. Which is how the Japanese were able to gain ground on the US automotive industries,because the Japanese vehicles were smaller more reliable and consumes less gas.

There another language of village people speak the language of the mountain or village people only know what type of language is that l don't know for certain but it's not Cambodian for sure. Video was taken just 2 years ago. It is sad to see that people are still living in the slum. But I have to admit that lives are better today than Khmer Rough. Khmer Rough killed about 1.5 to 2 millions Cambodian between 1975-1978. Thanks Vietnamese who liberated Cambodian in 1979. Some people in comments section might disagree with me. But kind of stop and think about it for a moment. If Vietnamese didn't liberated Cambodians in 1979, how many more Cambodians would have been killed by Pol Pot and Khmer Rough? Some people complain about Vietnamese taking Cambodian lands and living in Cambodia. But we should let them live in Cambodia just to show our gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifices. We don't know how many Vietnamese soldiers died in 1979 war. Vietnamese withdrew their troops from Cambodia in 1989. Pol Pot and Khmer Rough soldiers were still hiding between Cambodian-Thailand border. There were still fighting Vietnamese and Hun Sen soldiers in 1989-1995. Pol Pot died in 1997 at the age of 73 years old. Some people said Pol Pot died of heart attack, some said he was poisoned by his soldiers. I don't care however he died, Cambodians are living a better life without him. I don't know why some people still live at the refugees camp in 2015 to 2018?. They should not be divided. They are all Cambodians. In 2020 economy is growing at approximately 9-10% annually. Peace to my fellow countrymen! I wish I could visit Cambodia one day.

Good document. I love it. I can speak Khmer too. Cambodian is peaceful now. Economy is growing at about 9-10% annually. Cambodian need a better health care. People still die of Malaria. They need better water treatment. They have poor sanitation. Peace to my fellow countrymen. I want to visit my home land one day. Peace!

I am vietnamese, and I am here to see more perspectives of Viet-Khmer Rouge war. Since my father served for Vienamese troops during 1980-1984 in Siemriep and Kompong Thom battlefield. He almost died many time when facing the Polpot. I am so haunted by his story and wanna know how Cambodian survivors think about Vietnam. @SeUn Your thought warms my heart when I know there are some people still have gratitude for what my father Sacrifices. Myself did my Volunteer Work as an Englsh teacher 2 year in the outskirt of Phnompenh to teach English for children there until Pandemic so I went back to Vietnam last year. @@themekonglife899 I’m Cambodian citizen with Chinese, khmer and Vietnamese descent. I think most of Cambodians have mixed feeling about Vietnam-Cambodia war in the 1979. Some thinks that it was a war of Vietnamese trying to invade Cambodia so the Vietnamese government would have more control/influence over Cambodia. In the history of Cambodians back in 17th and 18th century, we lost so much land to Vietnam and Thailand. So there are always people that think of Vietnamese as an enemy, invader and not ally. Some were relief and appreciate the fact that Vietnamese troops helped Cambodians out of pol pot. I personally think that if the Vietnamese didn’t invade Cambodia at the time, Khmer Rouge would go longer and more people would die because of overwork, illness and starvation. Although I only understand a bit of Vietnamese just enough to travel around. I still feel deep connection with Vietnam. My mom was born in Saigon though :) my mom’s family was the survivors of the Vietnam war. My dad’s family was the survivor of the Khmer Rouge.

america uk and france where in the large part responsible for this and a lot of the following years of torment for these people. yet today this and these lovely people are largely forgotten by the so called civilised west. im ashamed to be british at times and would much rather be a part of these hard working peoples lives.
