Thanks so much for accepting my invite and coming back for a second look! I hope I didn't get any of my history wrong. Sorry to people who know better, if I did. It's been a long time (clearly) since GCSE History for me. Seeing you recognised on more than one occasion was a real buzz, this series clearly means a lot to people. Grew up in Derbyshire, and Derby was 'the city' we went to. As an adult, I always think Derby squandered every opportunity to be another Nottingham/York. A flat, historic city, surrounded by gods country on all sides. It has the bones for it. It's already a transport hub, basically every train ever goes through Derby station - but all for naught, because its all charity shops, barbers and shitty chain bars. Living in Nottingham, I can go to 10 bars and not have been in a single chain pub/green king etc. In derby, that might be impossible. I don't know what the Derby city council are smoking but it's some bad shit for the last 30 years. Then the racists.... My god. Nottingham is a beautiful bohemian city that reeks of history and culture, and whilst so much of it has fallen into decline, I've always been surprised by the resiliance of high street small businesses. Viccy centers market is the only living remnant of the 1000 year old market that gave the market square its name, and the nut salesman you met is one of the only remaining traders of that tradition left. A living legend! I spent my childhood eating mushy peas in that market with my mum, that you filmed being so completely desolate, which gave me a lump in my throat. Cracking revisit of the city I've called home for 15 years. That guy Rob did a top job of showing you around and explaining some of the city's history.

Thank you so much for revisiting my city and restoring my faith! I left 20 years ago and have never been back, and when I saw your last video, well, you broke my heart! But I am so grateful you went back, and your guide could not have been better. I hope everyone who watches this can get the idea of how lovely Nottingham can be.

I have always thought Nottingham would be a rather drab city. This video changed that impression totally. It is bright and well kept, with many impressive and charming buildings. It just shows how ignorant I was. As an erstwhile Londoner I also enjoyed the soft Northern accents. A great video!

Brilliant. I really enjoyed that and Rob did us all proud. I live the other side of Mansfield but me and my brother have both played in bands and have gigged many of the venues ( my brother playing many times at The Pitcher & Piano, The Hippo, Peggy's Skylight ( plus many more ) and I have played the Salutation a few times ) The high street shops were excellent, especially the fashion shops back in the late 70's / early 80's with Bird Cage, Lido, Roxy Threads, Paul Smith's and Robin Kerr's G-Force. The Trip is a fabulous old pub. ...... SUBSCRIBED ! Keep up the great work brother 👍🙏

Just watched both the videos of Nottingham and was great to see your part 2 address the missing bits of part 1. Nice to see some local history being told by a very informative guide. I used to work in the Broadmarsh for Intu and it's sad to see how it ended up despite all the promises.

Hats off to Rob, he really did a fantastic job with the tour. I actually didn't know Lace Market was more show rooms and finery as opposed to the heavy duty induatrial work. Which on reflection makes loads of sense. Always learning. Nottingham is very rich and interesting in its history.

Wild seeing my Landlord giving you a tour of Nottingham, on the first of your videos I've ever seen :D Rob is a sound bloke, and it's great getting to see him in this context. We moved to Nottingham in December, and have been really enjoying it. Having moved from Milton Keynes, where the shopping experience these days feels sterile and boring, Nottingham offers a lot of character! If you want a real treat, come at Christmas when the Christmas Market is up at the Old Market Square. It was one of my first experiences when we visited Nottingham ahead of moving here, and makes for a great afternoon out.

Loved watching this and thankful to Rob …for the return invitation …he was a good tour guide with good knowledge of Nottm which has been my home town all my life..almost into my 7th decade and seen a lot of change ..not all for the good …one of my nearest towns outside of Nottm is the birthplace of D.H.Lawrence in Eastwood …used to be a thriving shopping high street …not anymore lots of shops closed !!! The death knell of the high street is certainly being rung out !!!

Amazing two videos and fair play to coming back. Love your push in regards to advertising and vision for the site, your very likeable and lovely personality. Nottingham is in real trouble. 1997 to 2007 was probably a peak, night life was good and strong retail. As an x doorman who worked Pryzm it was a typical mainstream club however the R&B night was challenging on a Saturday night. The club closed due to lack of students. The cost of living is so high for them that students are very selective on where they go. In addition to this there is a lot of migration at the weekends. People are choosing to save money and go elsewhere Leeds, Manchester etc. Organised crime has grown and sadly they recruit kids to deal, this has caused a tremendous amount of knife crime amongst under 25s and there are serious police shortages. Anyone working response in the police would say shifts are very challenging. The designer street going under would say even the middle class have been hit in Nottingham. The council has been underfunded from central government hence effecting all councils but Nottingham has been hit really hard. It doesn’t help that it has also lacked vision and a tremendous amount of wastage in public spending. So when you put lack of central funding, local funding, poor management and changing marketing dynamics in retail Nottingham. Rob’s conclusions is spot on in regards to boundaries and funding. What I’d love to see if Turnip can do it, is arrange interviews with councillors along the way. What are these people going to do?! Nottingham people are lovely, big hearts and have tried to be entrepreneurial but given a bad hand when it comes to support. I’d think to be honest the Midlands has missed out on major funding. Great work Turnip!! Thank you

Thanks for doing this, I initially dismissed some of the recommended vids of yours because it sounds bleak in a world that is full of bleak news. However I thought I'd watch. I moved to Notts Sept 2020 and used to come up to visit friends from 2008 onwards, loved the altnerative/rock community up there. I've completely fallen in love with this city and the wider districts (Beeston, Wollaton etc) Glad you've done this vid and hats off to your chaperone who knows his stuff and educated me on things like Upper Parliament Street and the whole Debenham/Primark thing.
@stephenharness46448 ай бұрын
Lived in Nottingham most of my life. Never knew why Upper Parliament Street and Standard Hill were called that. Educational as well as entertaining.
@darrenwilliams38828 ай бұрын
Thanks for both videos. They’re a great illustration of the tale of two halves playing out in Nottingham. I live on the outskirts and rarely venture into the city, so I guess I’m a contributing factor in the retail decline we’ve seen there. Bringing life back to such spaces in a way that will last, given how we all work, shop and live these days, is one hell of a conundrum.
