The youngsters that only saw Silva compete when he was waaay past his prime and almost retired have no idea how bad ass Wanderlei was….

I remember Wanderlei from his bare knuckle days, well before he started juicing. Hell of a fighter, and that pre fight stare was about as scary as any I've seen.

From watching his earlier fights, his physique changed considerably after his loss to Vitor Belfort. He became bulkier and more explosive. He probably knew Vitor was on the juice so he needed to get more stronger and explosive. Hence a few years later, his dominance in Pride. But I'm sure everyone was using it by then.

Vitor dropped off the juice for that fight,he was way lighter than his previous bulked up state which made him gas against couture.

Pride didn't test for steroids and it said so in everyone's contract. So there's no doubt that Silva hopped on the juice.

Brazilian fighters r the best from the begining of Pride and the Ufc. Shugon , wonderly , Rixon Gracy ,Renzo Gracy , know we have this crazy deadly kick boxer whose going to fight Izrael And the Brilliant Bjj fighter who suprised every one .

Wanderlei, and Pride, single-handedly got me into the sport after the nonsense that was the early, no-holds-barred UFC tournaments. Sadly, present day UFC is probably going to kill my enthusiasm for MMA, bringing it full circle.

@@lovenlightman Nate does not belong in that list at all. He's good at boxing and submissions from his back; end of list. Present day UFC is boring compared to Pride and UFC from 2000-2010. I don't recognize 95% of the names on any give card and champs fight, what, once or twice a year?

Sakuraba was destroying all the brazilians in front of him , all best Gracie fighters got beat by him , then came Silva who destroyed Sakuraba not once , not twice but three times and destroyed Rampage aswell in his prime ...a straight killer Wand was !

Marcelo Barbosa didn't "fall out of the ring", he was trying to get away from Silva, using his legs and feet to guard as he wriggled out through the ropes.

Possibly the reason for The IVC to install that memorable netting on the bottom ring rope to the canvas. Read Chuck Liddles book. There’s a chapter about his time in Vale Tudo and working inside that net(death trap) vs Jose ‘Pele’.

Agree. However, in todays world, it's ALL about fighter safety. The U.F.C.'s of the world NEEDS their assets safe and have a long shelf life. Cant really blame them though.

Nothing about his time in PRIDE? I knew something was missing when it went from ValeTudo to UFC There's a Major Gab There Cause Silva had alot of Hype behind him cause of all the wins he had in PRIDE an he came to the UFC and and Under Performed like he did had us all second guessing those fights in PRIDE where refs wore ear pieces 😳

So much Good stuff. That Van Arsedale fight was special because dude was a Specimen and great things were expected of him, it was one of those rare times back then where the super athletic Wrestling star lost BAD. Many more Wrestlers would fall afterwards once guys knew it Could be done. Such a vicious Warrior.

Wanderlei should have retired in 2005. By his late 20s he was already passed his prime. He bloomed early and he declined early.

I think it was ufc rules that made him lose, if he fought tito in Pride, tito would have lost points for running away like a scared little girl, but he lays and prays to become champion.

The fight with Mark Hunt was the beginning of the end for Wanderlei. He tried to stand with Hunt and give the fans an entertaining fight. That was a big mistake. Hunt was much bigger and was a world-class striker. Wanderlei took a lot of damage and that began his decline in the sport.
