From watching his earlier fights, his physique changed considerably after his loss to Vitor Belfort. He became bulkier and more explosive. He probably knew Vitor was on the juice so he needed to get more stronger and explosive. Hence a few years later, his dominance in Pride. But I'm sure everyone was using it by then.

The fight with Mark Hunt was the beginning of the end for Wanderlei. He tried to stand with Hunt and give the fans an entertaining fight. That was a big mistake. Hunt was much bigger and was a world-class striker. Wanderlei took a lot of damage and that began his decline in the sport.
