What are your best tips for dry camping (aka boondocking)? 🏕
@christinemann6633 жыл бұрын
To conserve water: do food prep BEFORE you boondock, either at home before you leave OR when you have full hook ups. Use disposable plates & utensils when boondocking. I also use wipes to pre-clean pots and pans before washing. Collect dish water in a collapsable tub instead of letting it go down the drain, pour it outside or down toilet (black tank) to conserve grey tank. Be sure to use biodegradable dish soap. Oxygenetix shower head. But also, skip showers when you can. You guys are doing GREAT!

Washing dishes- get force of nature spray (it’s kind of like Clorox safe spray).... 1-scrape all food off with a napkin so there’s really nothing left on them 2-have a sub of hot soapy water and scrub 3- spray force of nature on and let them sit (it’s a natural disinfectant) 4-dump soapy water and refill with fresh warm water for a final rinse I think I’m OCD... probably not the simplest way. Haha

Get a couple of small dishpans. 1 for soapy wash water and one with clear rinse water. If your grey tanks is full, put the used water down the shower drain (if there are two tanks) or use it to water a nearby bush/tree. Dry shampoo is the best. Look for "leave in" conditional to save water rinsing your hair. Good luck with the marathon.

We have a vintage Airstream and dry camp frequently. We upgraded to a Battleborn Lithium battery and a Renogy portable suitcase solar panels and a Natures Head compost toilet. Have gone 3 weeks. Water is the only concerns we have while boondocking.
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
Oh, now this is definitely on our 2021 list at some point! We've only begun to do the research on lithium, but know it's a viable option for us as well. Especially, since we want to do more boondocking. Thanks for the recommendation on specific brands. We'll check them out. As far as the Nature's Head toilet 1) happy that it's made in the USA, and 2) does it just not dump into the black tank, but instead have a reserve that needs to be dumped? Would you just replace the existing toilet with this one? So many questions.🤓
@joshuaruland7583 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderlocal there are a few brands of composting toilets, but they all work essentially the same way. It separates the liquid from the solids. The liquid enters a urine container and the solids go into the compost bucket with your compost medium-peat moss or coconut core. We are a family of 6 and have to dump the urine bottle every 3 days or so. You can dump it in a regular bathroom, dump station, on the ground when acceptable, etc. The solids container can go weeks before dumping. With only two people, you probably can go well over a month. When you need to empty the solids, you can empty into a lawn bag and add to a compost pile or put in a paper bag and throw into regular trash, etc. You can plumb the urine portion to your black tank to increase the capacity-I haven’t done this. It does replace your rv toilet. Without the toilet, you can combine the black and grey tank to double your grey water capacity. An external temporary gate valve is pretty cheap-lots of KZbin videos on how to do this. Happy to share any of my experiences and mistakes with you. Thanks for making the videos, I enjoy following along!

One of the best things I ever did was to upgrade the house batteries on my travel trailer to Lithium. Had to also upgrade my inverter/charger as well, but lithium is a game changer. Went from two days on lead acid to 10 days on lithium. You will run out of water before power, but you can always bring extra water in the truck.
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
We would LOVE to eventually upgrade to lithium and have heard nothing but great things. 2-->10 days would be a dream, especially in remote areas! How are you storing your water in the truck? Do you have large containers? Also, which lithium brand did you choose?
@xdcsdiverx3 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderlocal I purchased two 100 AH Batleborn batteries for our TT. They are expensive, but be sure to ask for a discount and they will most likely give you one. You will find cheaper alternatives, but they have top notch sales and after sales support. I did have to upgrade my inverter/charger with a progressive dynamics drop in replacement unit because of the way lithium batteries need to be bulk charged vs lead acid or AGM. I also have a 180 Watt Zamp Solar portable panel for topping off during the day. Regarding water, you could definitely put a "bulk" water tank in the truck, but that's just extra weight that will cut into the GVWR of your truck. Everyone's different on water strategies, but we use onboard water for toilet, dish washing, and super short showers. Water to drink is always in 1 gallon jugs or 5 gallon containers depending how long you are out. I personally never drink out of the onboard tanks... super sketchy. If you full time, water is being constantly recycled, but sitting water over time is no bueno.
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
Ok, so your point about not drinking from the onboard tank - I COMPLETELY agree. Super sketchy. We know of other campers who do drink from the tanks, but, as you said, the water sits in there for far too long for it to be safe - in my eyes at least! Oh, and as far as Battle Born is concerned. It looks like they operate out of the US, so that's a big plus in my book! Thanks for the recommendation. - Daniel

Flush toilet only when necessary. Use gray water from washing dishes for flushing - first strain to collect food particles before putting into a storage continer for flushing. Don't dump gray water down your drain and fill up your gray tank. People also collect shower water in a basin to flush with. Your gray tank will fill up much faster than your black tank. You can always refill your water tank by using a 5 gallon water container and fetching water. BUT surprised to hear, if I remember correctly, your gray tanks are smaller than your fresh water tank. At some point you will want a Berkey for purifying water for drinking. You don't want to drink the tank water unless you have boiled it for one minute at sea level and 3 minutes at a mile high.
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for these GREAT tips Nancy! We've heard a little about the Berkey units. Do you have one you recommend? We have no intentions of ever drinking the water from the tank - like EVER! 🤣Other campers have already warned us against it.
@nancyphillips50783 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderlocal Travel Berkey - 1.5 gallons. Store it intact in your shower when you travel, but put things in front of it so it won't tip over. I keep about 4- 12 ounce bottles of water in the refrigerator to have ready to drink, if you like cold water. Also fill ice trays with Berkey water. So I use the tea kettle to fill the Berkey with tap water or spigot water. Why a tea kettle - you boil that when making tea, so that will purify any water in there. I use a separate plastic cup(lives on top of the Berkey) with a lip to fill water bottles that don't fit under the spigot. Just remember don't use the same container to fill the Berkey and then the water bottles, since there was unpurified water in the container. I found the stand you can buy for the Berkey, too tall, and it didn't make it easy to refill the Berkey which I do everyday. At least once a year, maybe more, since you are in a warm climate, you should flush with bleach your fresh water tank. I would do it with the new tank if you haven't yet. There are lots of directions on the web on how to do this.
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the tips, Nancy! I hadn't thought about flushing the tan with bleach, but that makes perfect sense. We'll have to do our homework on these Berkey units, specifically the 1.5G. 🙌

Walmart sells a set with a rubber matter and dish rack, so you can put your dishes in the sink that are not clean and set the mat and dish rack on the longer side of the sink, then as you clean them, you put them on the rack over the mat which drain into the sink, and you can get a tub to put in the half of the sink and put soap and water, and clean and rinse and place in the dish rack. That is what I do when I wash my dishes, or get a drying mat and place it on the side of the sink between the sink and stove top. Maybe get some jugs of dsitilled water, to wash dishes when boom docking, and distilled water is best if you have an iron and ironing board, maybe a table top.

Dishes: if you used a big pot, put about 2 quarts of water in it; add a tablespoon of dish soap (Dawn is fully biodegradable). Wash all the dishes with your soapy water and just sit them in the sink all soapy. When all your dishes have been washed, rinse them over the pot (smallest items first) and stack them on a dish towel. Finally, your pot full of soapy water, wash it and rinse it inside, outside, inside, outside and turn off the water. Then your dish stack will have all the smallest items on the bottom and they won’t want to slide away. The pot goes upside down on top of the stack, away from the edge. You’d rather have your dishes fall into the sink than onto the floor. Practice taking showers from the fresh tank when you have hookups. Fill the full tank and turn off the city water faucet, drain the grey tank. One person take a shower, look at how full the tank is. Then second person take shower and see how full the tank is. The nice thing is, if you run out of water in the tank, the other person can run outside and turn the city water back on. WARNING: if the fresh tank runs out, TURN OFF THE WATER HEATER or it could be damaged. Fill the fresh, turn on the pump, run the hot until there is no more air coming through the faucet, and turn the water heater on again. Practice taking shorter showers until two people can take two showers and you still have about 10 gallons of fresh left for toilet, cooking, washing hands, etc. Practice in a place where you can easily refill the fresh tank.

Hi, Sticks29! We use a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom with a few extras and mods! I went ahead and added the breakdown of our gear here. Be sure to check it out and let me know if you have any tech specific questions. I’m (Daniel) happy to answer! www.amazon.com/shop/wanderlocal?listId=1T03QNYKKDD4U The truck we use to tow is a 2020 Ford F-250 with the 6.7L diesel engine. As new RVers we questioned what size and model to go with, but felt this was the best decision for us. Especially, with a 30’ trailer. One option we added was the 4x4 feature. It’s already come in handy once, while in loose mud. If you’re more experienced, you may not find yourself in the same pickle as I did, but I’m still learning. First truck and first RV all at once! 😬

Haha! My wife has all these Instant Pot recipes that call for cumin. I can’t stand to even smell it! I call her Instant Pot the ‘Cumin Pot’ because even the gasket reeks of cumin.

🤣🤣 The cumin pot! That’s amazing. Can you even use it now, or would everything taste/smell like cumin?

If you get a large bowl and put a little water in it. Then you don't have to keep cutting the water on and off. Rinse your dishes in your bowl of water.

Put white vinegar on your cutting board and it will cut down on the onions making your eyes run.

What size is your airstream?
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
Hi FV! It’s a 30’. They make a 33’ but we heard certain national parks cap the size at 30’, so that was definitely a deciding factor. We’re not sure if that’s 💯 true, but we didn’t want to take the chance.

Rusty, good catch. We had a rock hit it and crack it. Thankfully since we’re from Florida, it was completely covered under insurance and we were able to get it taken care of quickly in Springfield, Missouri. 💪

Tony, we were pretty much terrified this entire adventure. 😝Which part scared you most?
@tonythomas20943 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderlocal Hi. It was when you left that site. The rear overhang was quite a bit and when you turned I think the AS was very close to that tree. Have a look but maybe just me.
@tonythomas20943 жыл бұрын
@@Wanderlocal PLEASE! Have your copilot with your radio watching as you leave the site also!!! 😀. That AS has brutal rear swing and if you hook it or worse it will be 10-20k$
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
@@tonythomas2094 Nope, it was definitely tight. We didn't know better then, but we try to avoid that many dead trees as much as we can. We had one fall on top of our Airstream in Arkansas in the middle of the night and it scared us half to death!
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
@@tonythomas2094 Oh, we've already learned that the hard way too. Busted a tail light in the first week with that swing. 🤦♀️ We've got walkie talkies that we use to communicate when pulling out of spots. But, once we think we're clear, I (Lauren/co-pilot) will often run around and get some video footage of him moving out. Thankfully it hasn't bit us in the butt yet, but I'll make sure to be more cognisant of it now that you mentioned it. Thank you!

James, thanks for the tips! We definitely do our best to recycle - when possible - and paper would definitely be an improvement PLUS require less water. :) Thanks for watching. Lauren + Daniel

Vent fan for all cooking, and for all aromatics both raw and cooked. Bowls to do the dishes in, and sprayer when rinsing, or even better, a wet dishrag. And that was wayyyyyyyyyyyy too much cumin....
@Wanderlocal3 жыл бұрын
🤣 Amen to that Benjamin! This soup was a disaster. Although I think way too much cumin was only a tiny part of it. 🤣 We can't believe that we didn't think to use that fan. So many other campers have told us this too. We won't make this mistake again. Thanks for sharing some of your favorite dry camping tips with us!

Yo new to cooking’ always sauté onions, garlic, carrots, celery first. To mellow the flavors, then when doing it from scratch use packaged/canned broth instead or water.Or use dried bullion cubes in the water to make a soup base....
