Crafting the Zenith, but I can only use the Swords of the Zenith... | Terraria

In this playthrough, we try to beat Terraria, and eventually craft the Zenith, while only using the swords included in the Zenith's crafting recipe. There's quite a few (18) but it's still a tiny fraction of the weapons in Terraria. This one was highly requested by several comments for a while, and I finally got around to trying it out, enjoy! This is the finale where I try turning it up to Expert Mode for the final stretch.

Now, while I am plenty surprised at the expert mode complaint out of the blue, this video has shown and proved a very important point. No matter what difficulty mode a player plays on, it can always be made into the worthy challenge by the player themselves. This is the true beauty of Terraria, and it should be cherished amongst the players, rather than shunned down.

I would consider it more my thoughts and criticism, and the reasons I don't play Expert when people ask for it, than simply complaining about it. But yes, I totally agree when it comes to the flexibility of the game. It allows for creating your own unique challenges and experiences that suit your tastes.

@@WandofSparking I for once appreciate your opinion and honesty. I've done this challenge myself before, on expert and at first I thought you've switched to expert (after obtaining Terra Blade, which is essentially the end of the run; it's a piece of cake after that), just to make the challenging part of the challenge less challenging (getting The True Night Edge). I did it on expert and it took AGES to gather everything, so I could stand a chance vs queen slime (for the best mount in the game in many scenarios, imo, a must have on all of my playthroughs) mech bosses with Star Fury and Enchanted Sword. Had to do quite a bit of preparations, gathering all the accessories, preparing viable arenas, elixirs, buffs, etc. It's all time consuming, but I never really looked at it from this perspective. I just liked the challenge and felt like in order to meet it, I need to do all the necessities. I'm yet to beat master mode, but I feel like the same argument applies there. I'm not sure if I'd be willing to run master everywhere and have to go through all the extra effort compared to expert. Rewards don't seem to be worth it, other than the extra slot, which I really like. I also like the way defense scales there. Makes the early grind for the extra defense really rewarding. In the end the game is meant to be fun, we all seem to have fun no matter how we play it. Some prefer less grindy, quicker runs, others don't mind dying a thousand times before entering hardmode on master mode, and then another thousand right after entering it. I still think some events and early game are very unbalanced. Every time it's a death-fest no matter how well prepared you are. It's always a matter of getting far enough so you can just face roll everything or basically 1-2 hit them. They quickly go from very frustrating and impossible to survive without cheesing to laughably easy, but it's barely ever right in the middle, where you actually enjoy the challenge.

I've always felt that, in regards to items that have ridiculous drop rates like 1/3000, if you manage to kill 3000 of that enemy you should be given that drop. Guaranteed. That way, you could still get it by random chance beforehand, but there's a point where the game should be saying "Alright, you've suffered enough for this. Here."

i can respect the fact that the man plays at his own pace in his own way, that's why the game has 4 different ways to play it. hell, me and a friend are about to do calamity for the first time, blind, on the hardest mode, and that's the way we like it. the harder mechanics, the new ways to break a fight and completely destroy it, and especially the grind are why I love terraria. I give this man credit for trying something he didn't enjoy, but it helped him confirm his way of playing was fun for him. but i did die a little inside seeing the zenith destroyed like that.

Having the ability to deposit your items into neaby chest is quality of life, beacuse you were gonna do it anyways do it, and it doesnt remove any element of skill from thr game. If you made every drop twice as likely to happen then it's not quality of life. Or if you have a game where enemies don't have healthbars, modding them in wouldn't be quality of life, it would be a fundamental gameplay change. I think thats enough examples, you should understand by now.

Yeah, I don't really think expert mode is much a waste of time (except for the single player respawn timer, that really doesn't make sense). The extra health is offset by the fact you get new loot and higher drop rates, meaning certain drops don't take too long to get. I think its a bit weird to think that you shouldn't have to waste time preparing for a boss a good amount. However master mode I cannot disagree that it would be a waste of time if you don't enjoy something that is unnecessarily hard, there are too few changes that make master mode worth it except for bragging right lol.

I always pick the Beetle Shell for defense and damage reduction. It was a good choice in my opinion Edit: Next playthrough idea: Craft the drill containment unit but you can use and craft items from ores and bars needed for the dcu (applies to weapons, armor, tools, but for tools you are allowed to use the pickaxes before the molten pickaxe)

@@dev655con Tons of drop tables, including the rod of discord and pretty much every ingredient in the Ankh Shield, are doubled. So yeah you have to farm more to get better gear, but I find that I’m pretty much only missing the vitamins for Ankh Shield at the end of the day because you just kinda accumulate the things you need otherwise. Plus the expert-exclusive stuff like shield of Cthulhu is the best!

This is how I would describe each mode (Excluding journey mode): Normal mode: Its very intuitive and takes little to no preparation. Any gear you need can be acquired by simply playing through the boss fights, you can learn as you go, a total of around 30 minutes of mining to get first weapon and then first hardmode armor (maybe up to an hour if you want to max out HP). Expert: Requires to do basic preparation for boss fights and learn their attack patterns, mobility is your friend. Acquire best possible gear or simply get basic potions and terraform an arena with lesser gear to defeat a boss (will extend time it takes to playthrough game due to preparations being needed). Mastermode: Requires significant preparation and familiarity to face bosses, if you don't plan your route it will take a while to make progress. You must obtain best possible gear, create an arena, and make potions in order to have a good chance at beating bosses (will significantly extend time it takes to playthrough game due to meticulous preparations being key). True Terrarian mode: You naturally set the world to master mode every time, not only this, you are required to build detailed NPC specific housing, create an elaborate pylon network and terraform entire world to look aesthetically pleasing, hell, you even create elaborate underground railroads for quick access to all biomes, and as a side hobby do all 200 fishing quests every playthrough. Preparation? Naturally, I will even set up special arenas for every single boss, and arena's meant to cheese each boss just for fun after actually having killed the boss yourself. Time? Isn't life merely meant to play Terraria? Its natural to spend at least a few months for each playthrough, sometimes to make it more difficult I'll play with an afk account so bosses have extra health and do more damage. I even create special artificial biomes for the Pillars, having calculated where they would spawn, and when I am bored Ill play with hardcore characters on the "For the Worthy" seed, naturally. Memes aside, I prefer master mode of all the modes. It really just depends on your attention span and willingness to make preparations. If you like quickly playing through games and fighting the bosses, normal mode fits you, if you like taking your time and having to plan and make preparations for your playthrough, master mode is for you, if your in-between, expert mode is for you. Terraria is one of my favorite games, and I have a very long attention span, I don't like games that can be beaten in half a day, I prefer games that even with experience still takes a couple days to beat, so I naturally prefer mastermode to extend my playthroughs. This is why there are different modes you can make your world, not everybody is the same.

The reasons that I play expert almost exclusively are: 1. Because classic mode is too easy for me at this point ( well over 1,000 hours in the game). 2. Some of my favorite items are expert exclusive such as shield of Cthulhu, worm scarf, demon heart, etc. 3. Treasure bags are much better for multiplayer, as each person get their own drops. 4. Lastly, I don’t play journey mode as I enjoy challenge, and I don’t play master mode as it has no real reward for its difficulty. Edit: This is just my opinion, if you want to play in any other difficulty go for it!

About the pillars: They are challenging for all classes, but the easiest classes to do them with are summoner and Mage. Pure Melee is the hardest, and you having not done them on expert before, were going to have a bad time. Other than that, I agree they are the worst part of Terraria (other than post plantera dungeon) and that the respawn timer change is ultimately useless

While I enjoy the added difficulty and rewards of expert mode, it’s obviously a personal choice of mine. But for a challenge like swords only, I definitely think sticking to classic is the way to go since it eliminates three weapon classes, and then some in the form of yo-yos

I see master the way you see Expert. What I like about expert is it gives the player more options, which is great for a higher difficulty level and is something more games should do. Master feels so arbitrary and lazy though. I never found expert difficulty to be a bad thing at all, in fact I like it a lot.

I dont care about the pillars that much that by now I get my endgame character and just clear them, of course switching back for moonlord. I also use that character to make arenas, espacilly a plantera Arena with the drill mount (dont know the name anymore) because it doesnt make things easier, just less time consuming and more fun

7:49 You can also destroy the walls with a hammer so Plantera's claws can't grab onto the walls. It slows her down and helps with the second phase. If you're building an arena already anyway it doesn't take up that much more time.

Yup you can also take it a step further and just put a teleporter on each side with a switch to easily move back and forth. Only issue is you need piercing weapons as the tentacles respawn so quicker in expert/master mode.

Expert is one thing. Master literally removes spawn I frames so that you can get spawncamped by a day two goblin army. You don’t even damage the goblins cause the damaged ones walk off and despawn so you can’t kill any

Best way to deal with expert (and even master mode) plantera isn't to just make a huge arena. Sure that will help... but mostly for the first stage. The BEST way to deal with the 2nd phase (which I don't personally do) is to just travel up your hellevator in the jungle as it chases you. You can just shoot down. Not much it can do but try to chase you.

Even though I barely have any time to play Terraria already. To be fair, maybe challenging and demanding gameplay is not your field. On the contrary, you are specialized in building and video making! Having played this game for such a long time, I totally understand how you feel about expert mode. I remember when they added it I kinda had the same feelings, but the boss AI and unique drops and stuff kept me playing it over normal mode. I think a lot of expert mode is actually having to learn how to deal with boss attacks and using movement, what wings and other things you use matter a lot more, cause you often can't really tank things. If master mode didn't have all the little other ways to waste your time, honestly it feels like the way you should fight the bosses to me. That's where I like modded, to remove the respawn timer and improve those little quality of life things. Master mode is still just a big disappointment though, with bigger numbers for the sake of it and no reason to play it. I really like journey mode the best, I think. It's nice to have those tools to set the time of day and stuff like that so I don't end up sitting around waiting as much, and I can still have expert mode for bosses when I fight them. Looking forward to your other playthroughs!

(Btw yes lmao, should've went for the offensive beetle if you're good at dodging, that is.) On expert mode you do spend more time on everything yes, but not only are common drops increased, but its also better for multiplayer cause of treasure bags. Exclusive drops aren't to be made fun of either. The best example i feel like would be is In classic mode, you get 20-40 Pillar fragments for every pillar. On expert mode, you get 40-60 (Always guarraenteed to make both weapons of each pillar and even get 8 super healing potions which is more than enough for the fight at the worst case scenario) And I feel like those factors make up for it. Playing on a harder difficulty and "spending more time" on it also severely increases your skill level on those aspects, which is always a good thing. Play the game you want it to, ofc. Just protecting the way expert mode works here though, xd

Interesting I didn't actually know anybody played terraria on normal difficulty. It kinda feels like a tutorial version to me because a bunch of content is expert mode only. Also in terms of difficulty I think expert mode is too easy. I started out playing normal mode but moved on as I got better at the game. I kinda saw that as the point of the mode.

Expert is the one for me. I like the increased loot, drop rates, and enjoy the challenge but Master is the one that only makes the game more grindy and unnecessarily hard. I can see why you prefer Classic though, had you gone Expert from the get-go the mechs would likely have been impossible.

There are definitely some weird design choices added to expert mode, which you did a good job of highlighting. I feel like just focusing on the negatives, and using the added difficulty to support a specific biased narrative (expert mode only serves to lengthen the game) is more than a bit unfair to the mode. It's totally okay to not enjoy the mode for the reasons you mentioned, but the discussion in this video was presented as criticism but came off as more of a rant. Again, I don't think there's anything wrong with playing on classic. Everyone has their preferred level of difficulty, and their own tolerance for difficulty to reward ratio. Personally, I don't enjoy master mode very much, as I feel it makes fighting enemies and grinding a lot more tedious without adding anything of substance, and that's basically the same reason you dislike expert. also i gotta say it but the problem with expert mode pillars isn't expert mode. it's pillars. fuck pillars. why did they increase the kill requirement though that sucks

Otherwise, I agree that expert mode is a mixed bag of better and worse, but ultimately it's just what you enjoy playing. In my 1st and ongoing mobile playthrough, others convinced me to switch to expert mode, and now I'm used to the grind and pain it provides, but I now see that it's okay to not beat something hard. personally, i really enjoy expert mode. higher drop rates, new exclusive boss drops, and the fact that i cant just build a platform and cheese everything (meaning, i need to actually prepare before taking things on, unlike in classic) makes everything feel so much more rewarding and sort of makes me stop and enjoy the game :) in the end i guess it boils down to what makes you enjoy the game. i love the grinding aspect (until it reaches the point where you need to build farms. thats too far) and a rewarding challenge, and expert mode gives me just that, along with drop rates that minimize the need for farm building. thank god

fun fact: the first time i played terraria on pc was on mastermode. It's now the only gamemode i play (btw i crafted zenith legitimately on that playthrough and it was with two other friends [we suffered]) i did end up being tanky enough to afk a moonlord fight tho with only 2 heart statues Edit: lanterns -> Statues

You should do a Terraria playthrough where your weapon, armor, accessories, and potions have to be for different classes. For example, you could fight mech bosses with Titanium set with mage headgear Daedalus stormbow Fire gauntlet, wings, lightning boots, warrior emblem, and anhk shield Summon, regen, ironskin, wrath/rage, and endurance potions.

im not great at the game but i honestly prefer expert mode. it actually makes you think about how to use your resources to your advantage, what kind of weapons and armor to use, etc. (the way an rpg is meant to be). plus you cant just sit still and tank bosses in expert mode and actually have to learn to dodge. i do understand that a lot of these challenges would be insanely difficult in expert mode though and normal play can be extremely frustrating at times, so i dont blame anyone for playing in normal mode. the respawn timer thing and the pillar thing are completely bullshit though, i agree. its not a perfect mode by far but it has a lot of cool features that make it more fun for me, like treasure bags and expert mode exclusive drops, extra boss attacks and phases, and of course the 6th accessory slot that adds just a little bit more diversity to your builds

For stardust, what I simply do is lure a star cell right out of the border of the pillar, and use the Cellular reproduction to simply farm all the kills. You can tell when the shields down because the projectile that moves to the pillar from an enemy after a kill ceases when the shield is down

Wait, I just realised, you used the Jetpack through Hard mode instead of buying the mech wings? And never upgraded your boots past the first upgrade? And you don't need the Tabi if you one shot EoC and got the dash shield - not as good sure but a super help. And the dodge from the brains expert drop is great too, but yes, Beetle shell armour is the right one everyone gets :) (btw, no 500 health?)

Funny thing about the Martian Saucer, with the addition of the Queen Slime boss and the new slime mount it is now very easy to just fly over the saucer whenever it's rushing your way with the beam. All you have to do is change directions when it's doing the death beam and you should be able to kill it very easily.

Honestly I don’t mind expert mode. I think the increased drop rates and exclusive items make the extra grinding worth it. That being said, I never usually have a problem with grinding in games so take that as you will. Master mode however… the earlier infinite flight mounts and pets are cool and all, but they don’t make it worth it imo.

Fun fact to make the pillars easier: the stardust cells each count as an individual enemy, so you can lure a few away from the pillar to make them the only enemies there and let them reproduce and keep killing them. They also can't go through platforms, so you can sit under one and kill them and let them reproduce until you've reached the counter

I'm sure you expect plenty of these, and it seems plenty did come in through the past couple hours, but would you reconsider your stance? While I'm certainly not okay with some choices left in the game (mostly drop rates), your anger at them and parts of the game felt overzealous. For example, you claimed that with the change to expert preparation would become much more grind-focused. Are these sections, of exploring and unlocking new things, not the general game? Grinding for bosses may seem harder, but that's because the entire game was rebalanced. It isn't JUST about the bosses, and that shows in the increased rewards from all other enemies. Sure, you may not obtain a RoD, but it's /designed/ to appear rarely, not neccesarily to make obtaining it difficult. I agree that flying tortoises become too powerful, and the pillars were excessive from the start, but not on the whole. Even changes like the respawn timer, which you considered just annoying, create meaningful changes in allowing time for rare creatures to leave, others to walk off with coins, or even for them to get a shot at npcs. Classic mode is still around for reason, but I'd say Expert may even be the more balanced way to play.

I 100% feel you. I have over 1000 hours logged on terraria and tmodloader but the moon lord and Martian invasion make me want give my monitor a new HDMI port with my fist. Even having played the Calamity mod on its hardest content-adding mode (death > revengeance > expert) I still firmly believe my worst experience with this game is the miserable grind to get across the finish line. Moon lord is an obnoxious boss to summon and the Martian invasion is bullsh*t. I’m glad you’re confident enough to not put up with it and instead give yourself an actually fun experience. whenever im sick of grinding i pull out t-edit too, you arnt the only one. also you like so many games that are realy good, terraria subnautica stardew valley breath of the wild, etc. Edit: I originally accidentally put breath of the child lol.
