I agree with some of the other commentators. This match looks fixed. Too many unforced errors from Wang Liqin. He was probably the best in the world at this point - on most occasions - and the only person who might have stopped Ryu winning. Only might though, because Ryu was on fire in Athens, the best I ever saw him play. Was sad he never played to quite that level again.

That happens to me alot when the ball hits the net and flies off. While the other person gets heaps on nets and edges. Just wish liqin had more footwork becuase you saw that he sometimes moved at the last second not giving him time to perform a good, well timed topspin. Now people who think i know nothing about the game this is just my opinion and you are welcome to critizize it.

Conspiracy theories aside (some simply refuse to die!), Wang Hao simply played better here. The margins between these players are tiny at this level, and WLQ having a slightly bad day is enough for Wang Hao to make him look ordinary. WLQ is a great player, somewhat boring to watch (like Sampras, brilliant surgical game but not a turn-on). He has the 3 world titles which no-one can take away; arguably he was gifted two of those by Kong & Ma Lin who collapsed from excellent positions, but he deserves his accolades. Wang Hao won only 1 world title, but was a whisker away from winning 3 World's & 3 Olympics, which would have made him immortal. Such is sport...On a separate thread, someone put forward the 'fixed game' theory for Guo losing the first two of his four straight World finals. I'm sorry but this fails to take account of the subtleties of competitive edge at the world elite level. I was there when Guo (unbelievably talented) played Kohno (boring as hell short pimple hitter) the first time. Guo simply had no answer at the time (although he would have in later years) to the brutally simple but effective tactics of the Jap. I was astonished watching, but slowly understood that Guo, a class above everyone in the tournament, was not the finished article and had an Achilles heel against the fully developed style of Kohno on that day.

What makes you dislike Wang Liqin playstyle? I agree it's outdated nowadays, but I think his playstyle is pretty much enjoyable

I thought chinese team want wang hao to play with ryu got the high chance to win because Wanghao never lose ryu before, but wangliqin lose in 2003 vs ryu that's why we all knew this game is fixed

This one ushered in an impressive head to head statistic for Wang Hao against his countryman. I remeber Hao having a bad win loss ratio against Liqin before that.

they knewe each other, too good, clear, how often trains they together, second olympic-semifinal,clear,that both are nervous without end, so a match aworldclaspalyer do you have? one, maybe two in your career, WM is every two years, olympics just all 4 years,so in german we say "not gegen elend", bad against worst, so matches are strange,no flow, we amateur-players i think have so en expiereiences too, in tournaments, other level, clear, but the same freeze :)

The Chinese have actually admitted that this game was fixed... They thought that Wang Hao had the better chance of being Ryu (Ryu was just simply on fire during that tournament). Probably true, but still a damn shame. The power of Wang Liqn's forehand was unsurpassed at that time (and might still be case), and he basically never lost to Wang Hao. Sad that a man who won THREE world championships never got an Olympic gold.

Had a chinese coach was former CNT player long time ago, until '85 I think, that confirms that "strategy" is used inside CNT. At least some years ago.

Wang Liqin has the biggest forehand in history simply because he is the tallest and fittest Chinese player ever. The truth is he was never invincible.Wang Hao was a bad match up for him cause he exploited all his weaknesses, namely the forehand receive and the BH game. Remeber,Schlager beat him the year before at the WTTC with his serve and BH.A reverse serve to his forehand and a good backhand could beat him.I've seen even Peter Karlsson destroying him with his backhand in 2003 and Karlsson was 10 years past his prime. The 3 WTTC titles are partly due to seeding and luck 'cause anyone with a good backhand had a chance against him which is why he never won the World Cup which is maybe not that significant but he lost to Kreanga,Samsonov and other players who usually lost early in the WTTC. Ma Lin with his serve and short game was actually safer against strong backhand players as evidenced by his score against Samsonov and Wang Hao.

haha, come on. Not only the mistakes, but also complete lack of using opportunities to attack, and and if he attacked, he did it like a toothless tiger. Just check other games, Wang L. is an absolute killer. Not saying he did it on purpose. But that was not his best day.
