"A valve is the same as a transistor"..... NO IT ISN'T!! Valves are a current amplifying device and transistors are a voltage amplifying device. valves use a heater to generate a source of electrons which attracted towards a charged anode (at 250 to 660 Volts DC) and operate at very low currents. Transistors pass electrons at high currents (compared to a valve) through substrate and use biasing to control the flow. In this way transistors can control very high voltage levels using only a very small control input voltage. I've seen the original patent for the 1st 2 stroke engine from the 1870's online. It had a wet crank and was charged by a separate induction & injector piston. Strange how this design has been reinvented over 100 years later. Crank case induction wasn't devised until the 1890's, along with the need for oil in the fuel mixture. Whatever happened to the Norton stepped piston 2 stroke 500 that featured in BIKE Magazine in 1981?? It looked interesting.

I think a lot of manufacturers are probably reluctant to invest in any form of combustion engine at the moment with the EV push that's happening. A lot of them either have EV models or have them on the way and like it or not, it's going to be the automotive future.

@David Stevenson As a motorcyclist, I can already tell you that I have no control over the other drivers on the road, and I'd be more likely to trust AI drivers over most of the muppets out there on the roads! Hahaha
@LockieNZ
@LockieNZ 6 жыл бұрын
The future is pretty hard to predict around that, as there's a lot of variables involved, as well as public and political opinion. Who knows, we might end up with separate roads for fully autonomous vehicles. They would function at a far greater level of efficiency in a connected hive mind that we humans do. Allowing human drivers to be part of that would only pull that efficiency down. You're always going to have those people who ride and drive for recreation and enjoyment though. So where we do find a happy medium? We're probably a good 20 years away from that conversation yet though. The autonomy we do have is based around existing roading infrastructure. Cameras on cars detecting lanes, infrared sensors detecting car distances etc. Not really sufficient for the full autonomy that's being envisioned.

I think bikes will be left alone in the western world, with a mix of eletric and petrol until petrol is no longer worth selling. Just like 2 strokes and their use as 'recreational vehicles' As far as emissions go in the western world, bikes are a very small contributor.

German carmanufacturer NSU went bankrupt because of their wankelpowered Ro80 model. they replaced broken engines free of charge. some cars went through 7 or 8 engines within 2 years, so there's a lot of money going down the drain. was great company though, but this mistake made them go down.

As a rotary owner I have dreaded this video, mainly because I know your right in every way,......but I’m a stubborn wanker and I know what I like. As for the future of the rotary engine I think it still has a place. The latest trend is performance cars with small engines and massive electric motors like the BMW i8 and the Honda NSX, In this application with a highly revised rotary I think it could work. But yeah the main faults with the engine are very apparent and not easily rectified

The NSU RO80s major failure was that they released it to the public with an essentially still experimental engine & put a ten year free replacement warranty on the engine, they bankrupted Autounion & were bought out by VW, VW Renamed them Audi & their piston engined vehicles formed the basis of pretty much every 70s VW that wasn't a boxer.

Thats pretty much it pal, it sounds great, they don’t weigh all that much and don’t take up much space considering the power they can make with forced induction. There are better engines overall but for small cars like my MK1 MX5 its a brilliant engine to swap in without ruining the balance of the chassis.

Emissions is the final nail in the Wankel engine's coffin. The spark plug ports are an insurmountable problem. It doesn't help the emission problem that Mazda convinced the US EPA that the Wankel displaces 1/3 of its actual displacement. I remember the late '80s RX-7 needing 3 catalytic converters to meet emissions. The design is beautiful in its simplicity, but it's too flawed to compete with today's piston engines.

Electric motorcycles are the way forward. That's it, the likes of same unfortunately will make the likes of myself and perhaps many others an unnecessary. However some like Wankel must be applauded for their engineering impulse. When I was at Technical Collage many moon's ago I remember some old Dr of engineering telling us idiots he worked with Wankel... But the most interesting and the coolest dood my far was a guy called Dr Bob Johnston, he was a Metallurgy scholar, employed as a young man to help change the grain structure of heavy munitions during the Vietnam conflict. Ended up as one of the World's lights on continuous casting.

Wankel: Funny word to pre-teen boys. Fucking shite to any-one who understands their problems. Knew a guy who worked on the Villiers Norton Wankel projects and if he's still alive, he'd send Matt running for a matronly shoulder to cry on with the amount of swearing used about the pointless-ness of them. I owned 2 Mazda 13b Elford Turbo cars, both got fixed and sold fast. .... mainly cos they were dypsomaniac drinkers with a penchant for fucking up faster than an F1 pit-stop.

lmao, had to light a smoke to talk about it. I really don't like the wankel engine, it's an oil burning, gas gargling, unreliable and inefficient piece of beautiful sounding garbage. They usually go bad around 100k from either the turbine housing warping from hot spots, burning the exhaust valves to shit. It just isn't as serviceable or reliable as conventional piston driven engines. The seals go bad, then it usually ends up with a big stupid replacement of everything from vacuum related damage.

where do you stand on the debate say for instance a 13b (1300cc) is actually 3.9L (somewhat explains the fuel consumption) basically from what i understand about the debate, a rotary engine is measured by only a single combustion chamber rather than all cmbined like a conventional cylinder engine... i dont even know if its ture they only measure one combustion chamber
@immikeurnot
@immikeurnot 5 жыл бұрын
That is true. Only one face of each rotor is measured. IIRC, it was Mazda that came up with that as a marketing ploy: "Look how much power this little 1.3 liter engine makes!" It's been biting them in the ass for decades when it comes to meeting emissions standards, though. The FC cars had three catalytic converters in the exhaust when everything else on the road only had one. Of course, the Wankel is just a dirty engine to begin with. IIRC, the spark plug ports are one of the biggest issues with trying to make the thing run clean.

Something thing else we do not know! We do not know what research has been done by various companies internally. We have no clue unless they tell us what big corporations like General Motors, Ford, Daimler, Toyota has done in secret on their own. White paper's only get written up when they are glowing with success or they break new ground. On top of that you really only give the customer what they will pay for and demand. It is funny really when Government attempts to legislate better fuel economy or higher safety standards etc....If you could create success and innovation through legislation well we would living in a world more like something out of Star Trek by now wouldn't we?
