I LOVE my JBL Charge 5! Today I took the Boom 3 back to the shop to exchange it for the Charge 5 (I was originally thinking of getting). I had compared it at home to my old Charge 3 (it has crackly bass now) and realised I couldn't live without the bass. The Charge 5 is a noticeable upgrade from the Charge 3 too.

the jbl has a very nice bass, indeed. perhaps the megaboom can't compare to its warmth but it's super loud and has good battery life to make up for it

there is no adjustable EQ in JBL 5. And you can adjust EQ in Ultimate 3 whatever you want. Ultimate is the best

I've read a lot of reviews on both speakers but tbh they both are great but for me personally I wouldn't buy the Megaboom 3 now as it's been released since 2018 and seems a bit outdated compared to the Charge 5 which is relatively new. Also they're both around the same price so I think the JBL is an easy pick considering you can use it as a power bank as well.

I bought mine in December 2018 ultimate ears, mega boom it was the best at the time the battery doesn’t really last anymore and it sounds a little raspy but after blasting for five years like a whore on Skid Row she was ultimate but now I’m gonna give JBL a try and so far I like it and I’m sure down the road some thing else better will come along in a. Year or two

I'm with you on this one. Megaboom = MegaMUDDY. Tested using Macbook Pro onboard speakers and Airpods Pro on my end. One question though: Did you at any time find the JBL *too* trebl-y, i.e., shrill or grating? I got a little bit of that in the playback, but of course can't know from my end whether it was the JBL or my speakers. Thanks!

Well that's for the comparison. Well noted. I'm thinking about the other features as well, such as durability, wireless linking, waterproofing, does the new JBL float? I know it's water resistant. I own a 3 JBL's up to the charge 3 but a friend of mine shits on me at the jobsite. He had the Boom and then the Boom 2. Yes, mystery clarity was there but very directional. The Boom speakers literally fill the room and are better open air. Plus a bit more durability

Agreed in the video jbl sounded clear, but not a clear controlled test that's comparable. Quick thoughts: Adjust the tones in the Megaboom app mids and highs can be raised thus increasing clarity and volume. Second the speakers are not placed the same. One is vertical well the other is horizontal postion. The vertical position the sound will dissipate into the open area air. The one in horizontal position has the tension of the table and directed at the video. Also the table would act as a deflector in containing the sound a bit and bouncing at the camera or upwards. Speakers only work as they should when placed in a box or with walls around to keep the sound from dissipating and Being less worthy. The functionality of each speaker, Megaboom floats in the river, also has the app to allow on/off. Just a thought.

I’ve had a MB 3 for 3 years now it’s a very great speaker and indestructible. I just ordered a Charge 5 to upgrade to something newer. UE is amazing quality and if you want something that can take more beating I recommend it but JBL does have some nicer quality sound. When I got the MB 3 I paid around $129 on sale and they included the table charger and now I got the Charge 5 for $125 it’s great to have them both get whichever you prefer or can find a better deal on.

There's one little thing that I noticed though. The jbl is laying down allowing the sound to bounce off of and be amplified off of your glass table top. This makes a huge difference. I deliberately sit my phone on a glass table top just like that for better and louder sound. Lay the Boom3 down just like the JBL.

I disagree. I think the JBL is worse. Yes, the JBL has a more neutral sound profile out of the box so on some songs, the JBL may sound better, but with EQ, given the wider frequency response, the UE could beat the JBL on any song given the better hardware it has.

so i have both of these, in my own environment, jbl is king of the sound quality between the two however, get 20 feet away and i cant really tell what song it is anymore, just that its playing the UEs sound quality is less for sure, but not that much less when u have them both full blast and see how far u can still hear lyrics. UE is giving more punch every step of the way, my charge starts to sound muffled at 20 feet for sure, and the megabooms highs are still audible and comprehensible from 30 feet away if i was in an enclosed space i would go jbl without hesitation their sound shape and bi amped design is about time much better than the 4

Thanks for the comparison! This is really helpful overall. Buttt for me this isn't the best test. The megaboom is facing backwards, so the charge has the advantage there, and also the speakers being played in different order was really confusing. The boom sounded better on a couple songs.

I wonder if the megaboom wasnt as loud because of the 2 speakers inside facing opposite of each other? Cause it Def sounded like it was lower. Idk but I had the ueboom 2 and that speaker was so good! I still have it actually. 5 years later. The battery just dies out faster cause it's old. It does however have that 360 surround sound. No bass though. I guess if you really want a pack punching bass sound, you have to buy bigger jbl speaker cause i have the charge 5 and its not as loud or bassy as i would like it. sure, the JBL prolly sound better on its own but the key feature of the UE is the pairing with other speakers. If you have at least 2 UE, you can pair them and switch to true R L sound. The pairing feature with UE adds value. You can pair infinite speakers of multiple UE types.

I mean, in a few words, the two speakers are very good, but there are songs in which the jbl charge 5 sounds better and there are other songs in which the megaboom sounds better, but I would buy the jbl because it's cheaper and it's not without quality

I have a boom3 and buying a megaboom3. I agree in your test the Charge5 sounded better. I think I would use the booms app to adjust for a little bit better highs, they really sounded buried in the music, good review

Yeah out of the box sound was lacking and the EQ is great. But UE needs to come out with new speakers already this booms are what 4 years old now 🥹. I do love their new hyperboom but time for the smaller speakers

I think it’s just JBL is newer and more update sound wise. The UE speakers are so old tech wise other than the hyperboom. I think when UE makes a new speaker it will kill it
