I think that's one of the central points of the show. It's about the problems in superhuman society when peace is threatened so much by monsters and alien threats that people who really just want to live normal lives are constantly in fear. Like, in our society you expect the government, who don't have superpowers, to be able to defend and protect people so we can live peaceful lives. Yet in a society where superheroes are commonplace, why is it that people are dying left and right, and that cities are attacked or even destroyed on a weekly basis? People would strike out against authority, even though it's not fair. It's part of the reason I like MHA and OPM, even just for exploring that little thought experiment. Although, I worry for the pacing in MHA.

I think that's the point. They actually believe he took false credit, but they're getting the people riled up by telling them he's responsible for the destruction, because that's what was officially reported. Then by them taking down Saitama in front of everyone who now sees him as basically a villain, they'd be raised in their ranks and expose the cheating. Of course, Saitama did not cheat and deserves even more credit than he got.

I still can't believe that Bang saw Saitama one shot a Dragon Level meteor and his report only got Saitama up to C-Class Rank 5. At the very least that should have pushed him to somewhere in the A-Class, and if he HAD to go through the ranks 'properly' than C-Class Rank so he could choose to be promoted.

Bofoi cracked it Genos furthered the damage and softened the meteor even more with heat Had it been a solid piece of space rock, had neither of them done anything, Saitama would have shattered it into dust instead of blowing through it and breaking it into rubble

The heat added by genos was almost certainly negligible compared to the heat generated by air resistance, and bofoi's missles at best created debris too small to survive the remaining descent through the atmosphere. Saitaima's punch was always going to split the meteor along it's fault lines and cause massive damage to the city, its just *less* damage than the shockwave of a full-on impact

I think the truth is that if Saitama had arrived first to shatter the meteor, then Genos and Bofoi would have been able to adequately deal with the aftermath of meteor fragments. Thus the true fault of the situation is that the heroes could not work together or even inform heroes below S class of the threat. The class system really sucks in OPM, and that's sort of what the story keeps trying to prove after countless events that should have placed Saitama at the top of the hierarchy, but he remains low ranked.
