It reminds me of the various motorway service stations/ little chefs charging £9 for a small basic cooked breakfast and £2.90 for a small cup of tea-(1teabag bit of hot water+bit of uht long life milk) yet if u go a mile or two further down the road you would usually come across a catering van parked in the lay by where u cud probably get a cuppa for £1 or less

@@tellboyr1002 Service stations have large overheads which the catering van doesn't have, a closer example would be for the catering van to park in the service station car park and charge £3 a cuppa claiming they have a permit when they're just freeloading.

Back in the 1980’s I took my rather special fiesta XR2 , to the Kidderminster U.K. Kwikfit...... yes name and shame. My XR2 was rather special and really stood out from the crowd. They were special cars in those days. I arranged to take it in for an oil change , air filter etc... Just a minor service. Booked in at 8.30am, first one there . Left it with them, after they said be an hour or so. 11am I went back, it was still where I parked it and other customers cars in the shop. Lots of joking and fooling around going on. I saw guy t reception who apologised and said they had a rush on..... even though there was no one there but me at that time. He promised it would be next in the shop and if I return 2 hours later it will be done. 2 hours 15 mins later I returned. As I was walking up to the garage I heard this loud revving, wheel spinning and erratic driving. Yep you guessed it. It was my XR2 The lads did not notice me, as they were laughing too much as I walked straight into the shop. I went behind the counter straight into the office. Manager was as thick as shit Me “ manager do your staff treat all the customers cars like that?’ Manager ‘ no, no , they are just moving the cars around’, he heard it but did not even get up to look what was happening. I lost it with him, I am livid and he just looked at the damn floor. I took his name, and walked out. By now my car was in the shop. The kid getting out of the driving seat I grabbed him and threw him across the shop floor. I wanted to kill him. I was not violent as I cannot be for my job as I cannot have a criminal record I got in my car and drove off. I rang Kwikfit head office. They gave me an address to write to. No internet in those days. I wrote many letters. Not one reply Lesson here is...... KWIKFIT ARE POORLY TRAINED KIDS THAT HAVE NO MECHANICAL KNOWLEDGE. THEY ARE WANNABE MECHANICS WITH NO RESPECT FOR YOUR CAR OR YOUR FAMILY SAFETY. I WOULD NOT TRUST THEM TO ADJUST THE SADDLE ON MY KIDS BIKE. IT IS WORRYING THAT THEY STILL OPERATE AND NOW OFFER EVEN MORE SERVICES FOR THE MOTORISTS. SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE AND GO ELSEWHERE. ........ RANT OVER .....

A trusted friend who owns his own garage had just done £900 worth of suspension work on my car finishing with a tracking check for me. He pointed out I needed a new tire so I went to Kwik Fit two days later. They fitted the tire then without my permission did a free tracking check and told me it was all out. When I pointed out to them, I’d only had it done two days before the look on their face was priceless.

My friends used to work for Kwik-Fit and I know for a fact the staff would charge for work that didn't need done. Also, if a car came in that one of the staff also owned they would try to charge the customer for parts that the staff needed for their cars and never fitted them. Kwik-Fit should be avoided at all costs no matter what the branch.

If the vehicle has failed the MOT and is left at the testing station for repair and re-test and does not leave the testing station, then the re-test is free. 2. @@dipys1008 Thanks for that information, by coincidence I put my car in for its MOT today, at my local MOT centre, it passed no problem and the cost was £30, my original point I tried to make to David Cole(above) was don't waste money on a pre-MOT just shove it in for an actual MOT and should repairs or adjustments be needed, you just do that which is required and have it re-tested, at worst another £30, a lot better than rip-off merchants Kwik -Fit, best wishes.

My mam was charged £740 for a full exhaust on her car, my mam getting on in life had the wool pulled well and truly over her head, she'd gone in for just a price quote, but they asked her to wait in the waiting room [odd that] because they needed to check the car, they came back with a price and my mam said she'll look elsewhere! The manager bluntly said they'd already taken her exhaust OFF to check for leaks and couldn't re-fit the old one!!! My mam caved in and had a new exhaust fitted. Mam told me a month later on what had happened, I wanted to go back and tell them straight what they'd done was illegal and blatant bully boy tactics, but my mam told me not to as she was still upset after shelling out all that cash and didn't want upsetting any more. Another exhaust centre wanted just £245 fully fitted. KWIK FIT ??.........YOU ARE ALL CONMEN AND WANKERS IN THE FIRST DEGREE.

My boss got angry with me because I would go around with the torque wrench to make sure they are tightened to the required setting based on the wall chart. He said stop doing that! He was so mad at me that he showed me how to do it without doing the safety checks. When that customer drove 10 meters onto the road his wheel came off. Well, that happens when customers go to these newly arising big company chain workshops, instead of calling at local garages that have served them well for decades. We have such companies in Germany, as well. Those chains normally go for the easy work, letting us single local workshops do the complicated stuff, that quite seldom pays off. This rids us of the healthy mixture of easy and complicated work. To survive, we will have to raise our prices, or else go down the drain. Please support your local single workshop. He then came back to my brother in law and remarked that his tyres are very near the tread depth indicators at the rear and the front tyres was level with the indicators, brother told him he knew of the tyres and the condition, next thing the fitter walks away and then some posh bloke walks around the car, examining the tyres, posh bloke walks away and then comes back & then gives me brother prices for 4 new tyres! Brother in law was adamant Halfords was NOT changing his tyres because they was so damn expensive! Posh bloke who happened to be the manager said bluntly that if you drive that vehicle out with such dangerous tyres he will have no option but to call the police! Brother paid for the oil & filter change and then told the manager to go ahead and ring 101 about his tyres, manager said he'll do it later...Chicken shit. Brother in law went to his local MOT station and asked for them to check his tyres, all 4 tyres was 'just' legal but would require changing asap. He got the MOT guy to fill in a sheet to show the tyres had been checked and was signed & stamped, brother went back to Halfords and thrust that notice into the face of that manager, brother also phoned 101 and asked for the police to see if his car had been reported for defective tyres, they'd had no such report. Lol when I was working at a previous employers, there was a kwik fit only 2 mins walk away. At the time I had a '98 s reg Mondeo, and the CAT had gone. You could tell it was the cat from the unmistakable rattle. Took it across, parked in carpark, went to service desk and enquired about the price to replace the cat. The guy (without looking at the car) asked what year/make/model etc it was, and when i told him, looked in his catalogue. He then told me that as the exhaust system was not in sections i'd need the lot changed (never heard of that before and you can physically see it is in sections). I then asked if any ID, specifically birth certificate, would be required, when he was stupid enough to say "No, why?" I simply said "To show you I wasnt bloody born yesterday". Took it to another garage who successfully replaced the cat for me within a couple of hours.

I worked for Smiley for 3 years when I left school, They are now called National Tyres & Autocare. The wheel alignment & fluid replacement were were 2 of their favourite procedures they would charge for and not perform . The premium Oil change was ALWAYS Duckhams budget oil. Also i think i seen about 10 flat tyres being repaired the whole time I worked there. They would always say the tyre had a puncture on the sidewall, so it would then need to be replaced . They had monthly quotas for tyres & exhaust sales.

A tip for everyone, even if you're not mechanically minded; invest in a very minor amount of tools (a jack, a few spanners, a torch) and do some basic research on your vehicle. On days where you need something doing on the car, or the MOT is due, do your own simple checks around the car first. Or if you can't manage that, try and get a friend or family member to take a quick look. Then, at least when you go the garage, you know just enough to not get scammed... "Your brakes need doing mate".... "Er, no they don't, I just checked em. Bye, I'm off to another garage!" Also, with the internet in everyone's pocket nowadays, do a quick check on any parts they quote you for. You may find they're quoting much more for labour and parts than is worth it!

Also the price for even a used R/R for a gearbox on a BMW is not going to be that low of a price so I'm sure that idiot also didn't understand that part either. This is why I go to my little local family run garage for anything I need. My car got a couple of advisories on my exhaust brackets and front tyres were apparently worn, plus my allignment was off and these thieving cocksnots wanted to charge me £750+ VAT for 3 exhaust brackets, £250 for tracking and allignment then £85 per tyre!! So I went down to my local garage (Manley Tyres and Exhausts) in Birkenhead, and alls that needed doing was my backbox, they got the part that day and charged me £50 all in. They used lasers to check my tracking, looked at my tyres (which were fine) and advised against going back to Kwik Fit for anything. Oh and the same tyres that kwikfit tried to charge me £85 each for.. My local garage had the exact same ones for £40. 2 years on, my Ford Focus is still running absolutely perfectly and I've done a lot of learning about my car so I can try and see the problem myself before ever getting ripped off. These big wig companies like Kwik Fit prey on the weak and its disgusting that they break apart someones pride and joy just to keep their figures up. My local garage is a family run, honest business and I'd advise everyone to avoid places like kwikfit. I'm only 24 and been driving just over 2 years, so my insurance and what I pay for my car isn't exactly cheap, but young drivers and the elderly will go the popular garages expecting the better service as they're everywhere, its so corrupt and downright wrong. Daylight robbery at its best. Bunch of robbing, disrespectful bastards.

I went to Kwik Fit 4 years ago to do a simple MOT for my bmw 1 series which had no problems. They failed it and came with about 13 bogus BS reasons as to why they need to search the car entirely for an electrical problem - they wanted to search the car for a week at £50/hour!!!!! That would cost me about 2.5k. I left the garage as soon as they said that and never went backj. 4 years later my car is still fine and there's no signs of 'electrical problems'. Kwik Fit are total scammers. Never trust any of their branches for anything, I've heard much worse in the past.

Went to qwik-fit to have 2 front tyres replaced, whilst doing the work they came and said the brake pads need replacing as well. Would you like us to do it now as we have the wheels off and the price would be slightly cheaper. I said no as I thought this sounded a bit fishy. I took my car to my local village garage a couple of days later and asked him to replace the pads. He phoned me later that morning to say there is need to replace them as they are only 20% worn.

So take those fucking new tyres off and put my old ones back on as there was nothing wrong with them they have plenty of tread left. (Passenger seat still folded as normal) I took it to another garage for a 2nd opinion, it was subsequently passed with no problems found with the brakes or lights, and the mechanic told me that they cannot fail a vehicle for a snapped rear access cable. All fast fit centre managers are under pressure to drive sales. They put pressure on staff and B/S like this happens. Many years ago when I worked in the trade an old gent came in for a full service. My manager said ‘oh, that’s old Fred he’s a regular so just take the plugs out and give ‘em a clean, steam wash the engine bay and park it up’ Fred was charged for a full service. Two weeks later Fred returned because his car was making a grinding noise when he applied the brake. My manager said ‘give ‘im and ‘is Mrs a lift to the town centre then on the way back visit the scrap yard and get some rear drums and shoes.’ I did and fitted them. Fred wasn’t charged and went away happy because he was grateful for the lift to do his shopping. I felt sick to have deceived such a nice old chap and left that business. A few years later the owner did do time for fraud but he had conned and ripped off hundreds of people by then.

About 10 years ago my grandfather, sadly now passed away, went into Kwik fit for a hole in the exhaust and was told that he needed brake pads and discs and they legally couldn't let him leave unless he booked in for the work to get carried out. After telling my dad the story we had a check of his brakes and discs and there was nothing wrong with them. We took pictures and wrote to the managing director who sent out two senior managers within 2 days because we threatened to go to the Police for fraud. We were given £100 compensation, a letter of apology, the exhaust was replaced for free and we were given a new set of pads and discs to be replaced when the time did eventually come. No one in my family has ever went near Kwik Fit again.

They lied about not being legally allowed to give your grandad his car back. It's his car, they aren't allowed to withold it from him unless he has failed to pay his bill. In that situation, if his brakes or tyres genuinely were dangerous, all the garage has to do is to report this to the customer, stress the fact it is dangerous and have written reports that the defects have been noticed and the customer refused to have the work done, this clears the place of any responisbilty.

+paul harper. If a mechanic genuinely feels that taking the car back on the road will put others at risk. he has the right to call the police who will send out a vehicle inspector who can issue the necessary paperwork to prohibit the car from being taken back on the public road. These inspectors normally work with the police when they stop a car that is completely un- roadworthy or falling apart.

I've not used KwikFit since the mid-80's; when their 'technicians' managed to shear bolts off the manifold on TWO different cars (a Sierra and a Cavalier) whilst new exhausts were being fitted. One of them was never repaired properly; indeed it was still 'blowing' when I traded it in. I'm not surprised to see they've never improved three decades later. At the time, they were employing kids on YTS - I think it was an abbreviation for Young, Thick & Stupid. Why on this Earth people still use KwikFit is beyond me. Find a decent, reliable TRAINED local mechanic. Customer retention and word of mouth is vital for independent guys; who have a passion for doing the job properly.

My mother in law, visited the Kwikfit at Goole on 25 September 2019. She is in her 70s. She was charged £333.71 for 4 tyres on a Citreon C3 that gets little use. There was a £63.96 charge for a 'Tyre fitting' Package and a charge of £49.95 for adjustment. She also found that loose change was missing from inside the car after her visit. I complained to Kwikfit as soon as I found out but left it till recently due to a family illness. I recently received a response from the ‘Master Manager Kwik-Fit Northern Division’ who explained the invoice and gave the following sage advice: “Poor alignment has an effect on tyre wear and fuel economy to an extent dependent on the deviation from tolerances.” The ‘Master Manger’ then went on to say that they had all of the invoices and the person that worked on the care was no longer employed there so this could not be investigated. He stated: “I am not aware of any incidents of a similar nature in this centre during all the time that I have been the overseeing manager and would reassure you of my confidence in the current team that work in this location.” I made it clear that neither myself or a number of family and friends will be using their services again as we believe that my mother in law was taken advantage of due to her age and gender.

He walked in with a list of things that (don't) need fixing and they could have easily said they do need fixing and charged him for it and made a cheeky profit but they had the decency and honesty to not take advantage of him and tell him the truth. That kind of honesty to customers is becoming more and more rare these days. Another big company charges something like £15 to fit a headlight bulb. In my car it's literally six motions. Twist left, pull, remove bulb, replace bulb, push, twist right. Job done. £15 please.

I have worked in the trade for forty plus years and have a degree in mechanical engineering, this has always gone on to some degree, the bigger chains seem to work this method to perfection and see most customers (particularly women) as easy targets. I am now retired so sometimes use smaller garages for work to save me the hassles, had these tactics tried on me but once they see you know what is what they back off. Some of the smaller independent garages seem to be adopting these methods as a way of increasing profits. With the massive hourly rates being charged nowadays I just see this as greed driven, always aimed at the quick and easy to replace parts. Garages are no different to any other business there will always be good and bad one's, owner's would do well to learn a little about their cars that would go a long way to preventing this behaviour in the trade.

All I can say is I’m sorry for the bad mechanics ripping you off and hope you’re vehicle is not left in worse condition then it went in for repairs. I have seen and worked with all kinds of mechanics in California, British Columbia and UK for the last 30 years mostly good mechanics a few not so good but it’s the owners and manager’s of the establishment that are the ones at fault most of the time pushing mechanics to get more work then needed and most mechanics don’t get paid a lot to begin with but that’s no excuse to rip anybody off.

I went into kwik fit 1/24. The staff were kind and courtious. However I was puzzled by the intense interest they were paying to my epic 13 yr Berlingo. Such a great car. They even went to great lengths to photograph the other tryes and around her rear end so much so she blushed bright red. The fitter returned to reception and spoke to the head honcho who came to me and ask me to look at the other rear tyre. We're just informing you that your tyre has cracks around the outer edge and in the grooves where the depth indicators are. Yes there were cracks but they were small in nature. Thanks for letting me know I will keep an eye on it as is it near the of its use. A point to note. I probably had swapped it out from a front tyre and they go through much more strain and likely to develop stress fractures. I then asked the main man whats with all the Photos. Is this part of your T's and C's or protection against claims from clients or are you going to grass me up. No sir we wouldn't do that to our customers. Now here's the rub. Suppose they find a genuine safety aspect. It thens falls on the owner to make the right decision that he does not continue to use the vehicle until its fixed. Tricky. However you must realise that all Business is in it for the Money. The motto is Don't let yourself be burned. Read and build up your knowledge. As for the cracked tyre I'm still using it to get value for money. So I am happy with kwik Fit this time.

I once had a manager of a kwik-fit branch tell me that my car was pulling to the left because of incorrect tyre pressures, I stressed to him that I always kept tyre pressures correct and showed him with my wee tyre pressure huge that the tyres were correct according to the manufacturer pressures stated on the door pillar of the car. He actually stood there and told me that the manufacturer recommended pressures printed on the car were only relevant to the car when it was in Japan because it was a Nissan! I laughed at him and told him that 42psi was exactly the same in Japan as it is in Scotland, he then told me that the air was different in Japan and that 1 psi would not be the same as 1 psi in other countries! There was so much wrong with what he was telling me that I complained and got a bunch of vouchers from them that I used to replace worn tyres sometime later and I have never been back. Bunch of fannys!

Its true what the manager told you. I have my own tyre company and we have a large stock of compressed air from around the globe to suit most manufacturer's. I think of myself as a bit of a connoiss-air when it comes to the windy stuff. When sampling you will find every country has its own distinct aroma, for example, Peugeot,Citreon, Renault have a slight Garlic hint. BMW, Merc,Audi ect have a hint of Frankfurters. Ford,Chevrolet is a hard one, its like a cross between Maple syrup and Donuts. Once an apprentice of mine accidently put German air into a Citreon's tyres and the car would only drive in reverse. True story!

He was somewhat right however, air pressure increases with altitude or something. I haven't done physics so don't pin me on this, but it could be true.

Air pressure decreases with altitude (the air is thinner). However gauge pressure is gauge pressure, ie if it says 42 psi it's 42 psi.

I have been saying this for years about kwik fit! I used them twice in my life for exhausts parts ONLY because I couldn't buy the part and fit it myself for as cheap as they did it with 3 year cover on the part. HOWEVER I fix all my cars myself and always have and every time I use them they tell me it needs £500 worth of work. the look they give me when I told them I am a mechanic and know better than the rubbish they are telling me I just don't do it as my job because it doesn't pay enough!! and to add insult to injury both times I let them loose on my motor I had to refit the exhaust myself because it fell apart BOTH TIMES!! funny how it never did after I fitted the same part!! ... I once told a mate to go there with a bust rear section of exhaust just because of the price and warned them they would be told it needed £500 worth of work and I would probably need to refit it at a later date but it's my friend so it was a free job if that happened ( it did by the way and I did refit it for free) .... on cue they did ring her and say it needs £500 worth of work on the nose!! so I went in with my mate to check what they were saying, they pointed out a hanger on the middle section of the exhaust was broken free to which I said I would weld it in 10 mins the "mechanic" (cough cough rubbish cough) said all shirty and with attitude "oh you can weld stainless can you" to which I replied it's not stainless A: because it's rusty and flaking away and B: it's magnetic non ferrous metal is non magnetic but the mechanic (cough) still tried to tell me it's stainless even after I had proven I know more about the job than he clearly did!! . funny how i welded it up and my weld lasted until the vehicle was scrapped some years later!! the rest of the work did not need doing it past an mot a few weeks later and non of the dangerous faults showed up because there is no way I would let a dangerous car on the road!! now I tell people this horror story and tell everyone that the low price they offer is not worth the rubbish they spout!!

"You could take your car to kwik-fit. You could also pay a horse £100 to come and tile your bathroom, if that's what makes you happy". Can't remember where I read that but I've always taken it as good advice.

If none of the cars returned showed a satisfactory level of service being carried out across different garages, there is only one explanation. Negligence is a non written policy . Negligence being one of the main reasons for putting lives at risk. The government should intervene by monitoring works carried out in all garages of this franchise and paying the inspectors with the £ 900 millions profit they made with their malpractice.

I used to work with someone who was a MOT tester for Kwikfit years ago. He told me once the testers were instructed to fail the cars with hydro elastic suspension for not having shock absorbers fitted as the mounting points were there, however they were not required. Also said they were threatened with the sack if they did not conform.

No shock here i work in the trade as a master tech, its been going on for years. ...Kwik fit, ats, halfords all the same the mechanics are told to up sell.(.i use the term mechanics loosely they are normally failed tech's who cant get a job in a dealership as they are crap).........Mates car was in a fast fit center and they reported it want front and rear brakes discs and pads...i checked them and it only required front pads only.....Top tip keep well away and they are not cheaper than a dealer or independent.

A friend of mine worked for Kwik Fit in London. He told me he saw one of his employees doing an MOT on a car. The car passed its MOT. The mechanic wanted to find a fault so he can make money. He told me the mechanic took a screwdriver and rammed it into the cars radiator. Put a new radiator on and charged his customer for a new car radiator.

I used to work for ats euromaster, very similar to quik fit - the management was always under lots of pressure to hit impossible targets, and bonus is earned from additional sales like wheel alignment, brakes etc. If you know cars then by all means use places like this because you can argue and not be taken for a mug. But if you have no idea, pay the extra money and find an independent specialist. It'll save you money in the long run.

I used to deliver stuff to quick fit all across the Midlands and South of England and I can confirm that they are all rip off merchants and not just the odd dodgy garage. Once heard them tell a girl would costs over £1000 for replacement exhaust for an Audi that was a few years old. She was in tears. When outside I told her to go to the local garage who would charge a fraction of that costs. Total rip off

i worked at waltham cross kwikfits for a month, i see the manager spray wd40 on shocks and told them they need replacing, i was told that exhausts i have to reuse there old brackets or it will come out my wages, final straw was the manager pocketing the money from tyre repairs. i told the manager i cant as its on the wall. he told me to just do it. to which i stated if the car has a blow out on a motorway and kills someone. would he state he told me to or just blame me for it...... he then oviously called me a prick and sacked me.
