Why did Edd China leave Wheeler Dealers? It was a hard decision for me to make but I'm going to explain exactly why I felt like I had to leave the show after 13 years.
To watch full episodes of my Workshop Diaries, watch them here: bit.ly/3ItPqMR
Wheeler Dealers is a great car show, reportedly the biggest on the planet at the moment. It is broadcast in about 220 territories around the globe and apparently has several hundred million viewers worldwide. This success would not have been possible without the huge collaborative effort put in by the production team over the years but most of all because of the loyalty and appreciation of our fans who have kept watching, in ever increasing numbers around the globe. Because you kept watching it; we kept making it. So thank you all for that.
Making Wheeler Dealers is no easy task and every episode requires a massive effort from a dedicated team of people. We started, all those years ago, on a niche channel in the UK with just a small production: Michael Wood and Dan Allum; the founders of Attaboy TV and originators of the show, one production manager, a camera man, a sound man and Mike and myself. One hundred and thirty five cars later we have grown to a production team of over forty five staff, and we are now entertaining much of the TV watching planet. It's been quite a ride.
It was exactly the worldwide popularity of Wheeler Dealers and sheer size of the audience, coupled with the lack of product placement and brand endorsements within the show which meant that Discovery US and Velocity Channel saw an opportunity for further exploitation of the brand and so, after season twelve, the show commission was taken over by Velocity Channel in the US, who decided to replace Attaboy TV with Discovery Studios in California.
Unfortunately, on Velocity's first attempt at producing the show they found Wheeler Dealers 'too difficult to make', 'at least in its current format'. In particular, the detailed and in depth coverage of my fixes in the workshop; what I consider to be the backbone and USP of the programme, are something Velocity feel should be reduced. The workshop jobs are certainly the hardest part of the show to make and reducing their substance and role in the show will save the production considerable time, effort and therefore money. However, this new direction is not something I am comfortable with as I feel the corners I was being asked to cut compromised the quality of my work and would erode my integrity as well as that of the show, so I have come to the conclusion that my only option is to let Velocity get on with it, without me.
Wheeler Dealers has been an enormous part of my life since 2002, a real roller coaster of demanding challenges and triumphant moments. It has been a privilege to meet and work with so many great people and, from the workshop to the joy rides, to be allowed to experience so many fabulous cars and amazing locations. Leaving the show at the height of its success has been a really tough decision to make but I believe the time is right for me to spread my wings. Sometimes you've just got to break free from the confines of your rut and head for the far horizon.
I would like to thank Attaboy TV, Mike, our incredible crew, and everyone who has contributed to making such a great programme for all of these years. A special thank you must go to every one of our fans for watching these past thirteen series, it has been great having you along for the ride, your appreciation means so much.
Mike and Velocity will continue to make Wheeler Dealers, apparently with Ant Anstead taking my place in the workshop, so new episodes will be on your screens in due course. Being the new boy is never easy, so please give Ant your support, I wish him the very best of luck. It will certainly be nice to see Mike turn up at the workshop with yet another wreck knowing I don't have to do any of the work!
As for me, I am already working on some great new projects which will expand my world in new directions and, as I will have a bit of time on my hands, I'll even start to put some things up on my youTube channel, so keep an eye out for that. Right now though, I just feel relieved and exhilarated with freedom and I can't wait to get cracking on the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.
For years Discovery have been encouraging everyone to: 'make your world bigger' - and that is exactly what I am now doing.

tommyd237 I agree. The only show that actually shows you how it's done. I never used to watch the first 15 minutes anyway and the last 5 minutes didn't interest me cause they never used to tell you how long Edd been working on the car or factor that in with how much profit they were making. Edd good luck with whatever you doing.

Gaspam .gaspam_ I agree. Capitalism is great and has done more to help people thrive in the world than any other system. BUT, no application is perfect and this is a great example. When noncreators come in and kick out the creators to take their money the product suffers. Once the "Goose that lays the golden egg"" dies, the enterprise collapses. Then everybody suffers, fans and employees.

I understand completely why you left Edd. Having an American company take over the show was the worst thing that could have happened to it. Those of us who watched specifically for the amount of detail you provided while working on these cars don't care for the over-hyped American reality show style they obviously want to implement. Good luck on your new endeavors.
@robbiereilly
@robbiereilly 2 жыл бұрын
Speaking as an American, I totally agree. Discovery and History channel's crop of reality shows all look alike and fake. I was immediately taken by Wheeler Dealers first time I saw it, for that sincere approach and and personal touch that the show displayed. The camera work was exemplary and the pacing was just right. Mike's dealing and Edd's expertise were a winning combination. It reminded me of those early PBS programs like New Yankee Workshop, This Old House (original run) and so many others before they, too, tried to be too slick for their own good. Right now in Tokyo, they're airing the original WD episodes, before Velocity took over. They're Fab and so much more enjoyable and informative than the newer seasons, which try to be too slick and gimmicky. It's sad how when you become too successful, the big boys come and want to buy you out and change you away from the very reasons people tuned in the first place.

The producers wanted to shorten the show, so Ed would be not that much in the picture as usual and he didn't like that so he did quit and thought that he could do better and get his own show. Well that didn't happen and now he has become a out of sight out of mind nobody no one cares about! And Mike is the smart one who thinks about keeping on getting food on the table, and don't give a rat's ass about whatever the producers do to the WD show, as long they keep on paying him big bucks for every episode.

Edd's parts of the show were the best parts, explaining what it does, showing you how it works, suggesting preventive maintenance, going over the quirks and fixes that have been discovered over the years; Those are what made the show! Channels like Discovery, TLC, History, AHC, etc. have lost their way, and forgot what made their channels worth watching; I grew up watching these show, I almost became a history teacher because of it. This video was very classy, didnt throw anyone under the bus, and even asked the WD audience to be kind to the new guy. To Ed; I tip my hat to you.

It was clear for some time Mike liked to be in America and American Cars. I do not think these cars, the drivers seat on the wrong site, are really very popular in England. I am not surprised, but really sad. Europe has no cultural background on American cars, Apart from Ford. Now there is the Daewo-Chevy. I hope there will be a TV program with Ed teaching us how to transform our cars in electric B de Haas

Combined with an instantly approachable presentation style, which explained every detail of the work with a 'why' and 'how', in enough time for the layman to understand it. interesting to see how on Mike's explanation he basically says Edd didn't want to work, Edd was horrible to people, Edd was a problem, Edd thought he was too big for the show, we got rid of Edd - whilst Edd explains about production and commercialisation changes and thanks all the people involved with the show including Mike, without ever getting personal or slagging anyone off like Mike did, i think Mike is bitter because he's losing the most valuable asset of the show and the thing that allowed him to reap in the cash - i know who i believe and who acted with more integrity and who has the bigger skillset - Mike can do one, good luck to Edd is what i say! long live Edd!

Lawrence I agree with you. I really enjoy the mechanical parts and watching each part of the car being restored and repaired. I also have noticed the watering down of Edd's part of the show and the reduction of showing his actual work on the cars. The best example was the Honda CVCC episode. They restored that Honda to look factory fresh but they wasted time on showing Mike learning "hypermiling" rather than seeing the actual restoration of the car. I didn't really mind Mike working on the cars but preferred Edd. I am willing to watch the new show and see what they have in store for us.

Edd you were the only reason loads of us including me watched it at all, the cars and your endless expert mechanics were the program, you are truly gifted. Thank you for the years of pleasure YOU gave us.

From Australia, I’m a real petrol head and loved your segment of the show, I’ve picked up many tips along the way and can’t wait for your new show. Good luck for the future, you deserve it.

Unfortunately this is so common in every industry. You have something the has been finely honed and is working to perfection, and then someone comes in that "knows better" and makes changes, and that's the end of it. Thanks' Edd for your honesty, information, entertainment and hard work over the years. You are spot on it was the detailed workshop parts that made the show. I, as no doubt many of your fans support you and wish you well in your new ventures.

Spot on Ian. As I've posted earlier, if it ain't broken - don't fix it. Good luck to Edd for the future whatever that holds.

Totally get where you're coming from Edd... No-one has ever demonstrated as well as you have, that cars can actually be fixed. Over the years, the show must have inspired 1,000's to consider careers in engineering ... this was always the pull of the show ... how about a completely new series called Dealer Wheelers?

Exactly, I wish Edd the best on his future. As far as mechanics on TV shows my two favorite are Edd and Roger on Chasing Classic Cars. Legendary Motor Cars tops my list as well. No BS, a natural sense of humor and probably 1,000 times the mechanical skills and total knowledge as many of these other hacks on some of the other car shows people have mentioned. As many other people posted that there are so many other shows that are staged for ratings. Like no one has ever done a burn out etc. Some of the shit these other shows display as far as employees attitudes etc. would have them fired in a reputable shop. Again, good luck Edd.

Working on it is really incredibly important but buying and selling, having the right knowledge, is also important.

Buying a car is nothing..you clearly know nothing about the business do you. If it wasn't for Brewer, this show also would have been nothing! It was the team effort that was golden!
