I’m obsessed with the setup. Greensheet sheet on the floor held down by four paint cans. Mattress without a sheet on it. Dining room table with a visible hole in the wall. This is awesome.

Based off the video you should take time to reflect on why you’re lonely, what exactly you’re looking for in another person, why you feel you want/need another person, ect. I feel what you’re going through but the videos aren’t addressing the loneliness, some people are satisfied with living alone until they die, try and think about how you could give that to yourself. Instead of trying to fill a bottomless pit of loneliness with videos try finding the tools you need to walk right over said pit

Yeah my brain is not at all like what he described, I love thinking, I will get lost in my thoughts, lock me alone in an empty room with a notebook and some pens and I'll be perfectly content for a good week, but I can't just always let myself think. Letting myself think in depth thoughts takes effort and energy, which usually manifests as me doing nothing physically but fidgeting, or maybe writing my thoughts down. But I'm a person, I have responsibilities, so when I need to do something else, I need to distract my brain with some garbage to keep me from wandering off into my own head in pursuit of something more fun to do.

Yes! It's the "I need just enough dopamine to get me off of this couch and doing the thing I need to do." I've spent days lying on the couch, a mobile game to occupy my hands while my brain concocted elaborate worlds. But getting caught in an emotional moment between two characters in my brain isn't exactly conducive to making me hang out the laundry before it goes mouldy! Not to mention the feeling like you're hanging out with a friend, which is so extra valuable if you live alone and struggle to match schedules with anybody you know IRL

One of my all-time favorite quotes from Mr. Rogers went something like, "I'm very concerned that our society is much more interested in information than wonder, in noise, rather than silence." And I've been trying to free up space in my mind to just...come to terms with the world around me. I would like to be present. As a creative person, I haven't given myself a single second to just let my boredom take me to wherever I wanted. It's pretty frustrating, so I think I'll have more of what he's having.

A topic that I think is related to this is maladaptive daydreaming. I hate boredom so much that I’ll tell myself stories. The pros to this include that I probably wouldn’t get bored enough to shock myself, and silence isn’t so bad. The downside is that I can also use this to distract myself from boring things that are really important to pay attention to, like class, work, or a problem I need to be addressing. It’s basically the same as putting on a podcast to me, except harder to stop myself from turning to it because I can’t just leave earphones at home. Great video! I listened to it on my commute home.

It's a sign of anxious attachment actually. It fills the liminal space in reality where you don't feel alone, because once you're aware you're alone, you freak out that you aren't safe. So the strat is to drown out the silence so you never have to be alone with yourself. You don't have to judge yourself for using these strategies to cope. As long as you are able to be flexible and can tolerate silences as needed in life, it doesn't have to be a negative thing. If you can't tolerate 5 seconds of silence without spiraling, I would suggest talking to a therapist honestly.

practicing stillness to failure over and over again can help with this. the meditation involves sitting motionless and obswrving the body and mind cry out in boredom. it trains detachment from such sensations. if you cant do it for 5 seconds, do it for 4, then take a break and try for 5. then keep going. once a day or more often. i've found it's easiest not to force this practice but to let it come naturally as an urge. next time you notice an emptiness within you while scrolling, or a sense of unease and overwhelm, or any negative sensation whatsoever, put the internet down and try the stillness practice. there will be no immediate results and it'll seem like you wasted your time at first, but if you keep doing it the benefits become massive over time

Turned my life around two months ago. Started meditating, writing down my thoughts in a diary and reflecting on them. This has basically allowed me to reconnect with the inner me. Instead of random thoughts constantly dwelling in the back of my mind, I now sit back, relax, listen to them and try to either completely free my mind of any thought, or I try to focus them in one direction. This has allowed me to understand myself more, and with that, understand others better aswell. One thing I've realized because of this, is that I've been scared of my emotions for a long time, that's what trauma does to you, even if you might not have realized it before. Now instead of running away from them and other things that would make me uncomfortable, I face them and try to understand them. It's not like it's not uncomfortable anymore, somethings are just like that for possibly our whole lives, but now I know that I am able to face it and that I am able to learn to live with it.

I cannot ever be bored because my thoughts are running all over the place at all time. I did this experement where I put on blindfolds and earplugs and just sat there for 15 minutes, and I didn't even get a little bit bored. Keeping videos and music on while I’m doing anything ever keeps me away from the violent intrusive thoughts I have. I'm an indie game dev and this is absolutely true. I always do my best creative work in silence with my phone on silent across the room. Having music or a video on in the background is definitely more entertaining and makes work go faster, and is nice for more tedious stuff. But when doing things like writing, character design, or coding something new, I always come up with better ideas faster when there's nothing else going on.

I love the holy mismatched socks. I love the wall socket without a cover. I love the bed without a sheet. I love the hole in the wall. I love the mess around the greenscreen on the floor, held down by four paint cans. I love the random sock laying on the floor. It's imperfect, it's honest, it relieves the pressure I've never noticed was there of everything else around me being too perfect to live up to. Honestly, I spaced out on a few of the talking points going down a rabbit hole in my head on the point that was made before. That means it's actually good. Thought provoking. None of the nonsense "content" created these days is.

The sad thing is as a kid, I used to think day dreaming was a bad thing because I wasn't being productive and I'd try to get rid of the habit. Now I'm trying to gain back the habit because it is certainly better than what I'm doing right now. I can barely hear myself anymore and I want to again...

First, I really like your voice. Second, this might explain why in my free time I feel genuinely good listening to other people talk as I paint my nails/do my skincare/tidy up the house, I'm in academia so my job is listening to my own thoughts for several hours a day while my inner voice goes really fast and elaborates a bunch of stuff. Very relaxing to shut myself up for a while and just respond to soft stimuli

I dont like silence or lack of entertainment because I feel like, If I'm not watching, listening, learning, or being entertainined, I'm wasting my free time, and by extension my life. Every point in time where I access this relief, are points in time where I'm forced to be there, like work or school.

this video is a great reminder to cut on stimulation from time to time and enjoy silence oh and here's something that helps me a lot with cringe/bad memories from decades ago: I like to acknowledge it and then interrupt the thought with "it happened and so what ?" it always helped me move on from that memory ! Writing it down works as well because you physically take it out of your mind, just don't dwell on it too much either way

This was really helpful, I really appreciate the honesty of what's being said that isn't really sugar-coated without you being judgemental or demeaning. It feels a lot of the time when given health advice we're pressured to stop doing the unhealthy thing immediately 100%, but you acknowledged taking slow steps and just genuinely made this whole concept really approachable. I'm already really benefiting from this, asking myself am I running or am I relaxing, and trying to train my mind to think better lmao Thank you for making this video

I like to put things in the background because when a task is repeated for awhile I might as well try and learn and use my time but I do try and value my silence I do agree that silence can be a "fear" like the dark because human thought can be insane, especially if you have anxiety or depression or just generally insecure, putting your brain where it can but probably shouldn't be in can happen with too many thoughts I am super glad you mentioned thinking as being a skill, a lot of people don't do it, many are passive with the same thoughts and/or thinking about things that aren't even real or don't benefit their own lives in any way I think(😳) too, that many people do live in places where there is almost a guarantee for noise in the background so that could be another reason for the need of noise nowadays, but loneliness/isolation is never something a human can experience for any long amount of time, its just a fact; because isolation forever is a recipe for insanity I love how you highlight the types of thinking or no thinking at all can occur depending on the state of silence or time in your life Super good video, I know the thoughts out of a thousand people you'll probably never hear/see or take deeply but I enjoy your videos very much and all of its care+thought so I figure I would make a comment, I often don't so maybe you will see it ❤:) your awesome !!

7:11 by the way, i disagree with Vsauce on his take on attention-grabbing short-form content he gave in the interview "i spent a day with Vsauce". He said that videos where there are one or a bunch of other videos playing along with the main video (like gameplay from Subway Surfers, clips ftom Family Guy, satisfying soap cutting etc.) are okay because back when we didn't have tiktok, we used to watch at birds or cars driving on the street while we were talking on the phone. He's wrong because birds and cars are much less stimulating than aforementioned techniques to keep the viewer's attention and can lead to addiction or/and negatively impact a person's mental health in other ways

This reminds me of a Bible verse! "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." Philippians 4:8 It seems like kind of an odd thing to go out of your way to intentionally do, but it can be a much needed replacement to all the troubling thoughts that easily enter our heads. Also, that minute of silence was one of my favorite moments in a video lately. Had me take a relaxing deep breath! Now I'm thinking it would be cool (and maybe weird, but still) to have longer videos like that but with talking here and there.
