An interesting thing to add regarding sensitivity is how it affects the way the speaker reproduces the input material. A speaker with a higher sensitivity will usually also have a higher grade of definition and speed. When it comes to musical playback, the definition is where the excitement in the music is.

Wow car audio is such an interesting rabbit hole. I personally just wire 4 decent door speakers directly to the head unit and add an amp and sub in the back somewhere. Achieved very decent results and saw no need to go further. There's an 80/20 rule when it comes to results. You can achieve 80% of the result by putting in 20% of the work and money. You'd need 80% of the work and money to achieve that remaining 20%. I'm sure the end result is worth it but dang.. you must have some high brow clientele for your installs. It would be an interesting video to see the client interaction side of your business. Where you discuss product and numbers with your customers.

I actually have two sets of 6.5” Focal components in my car. Pricy but sound phenomenal. Bought them in 2011 and are still going strong. From 2011-2018 they were installed using the regular passive setup and sounded great. Recently had everything installed in a 2018 Accord and they did the active setup. It’s a world of difference in sound. Especially with high-end speakers like Focal it is very worth getting the most out of them. It’s like going from a regular exhaust to a free-flow dual exhaust.

I have a crazy seeming question. I have a 2+2 convertible. There are speakers: 2x 6-1/2" by my feet 2x ? tweeters near the side mirrors 2x 6x9 in the back seat (l/r) I assume it's wired to have the tweeters linked to the foot speakers but the rear speakers are closer and more in the open. Should I use a component set in the back & tweeter locations? I might not need the foot speakers at all. My fear is that because all the mid will come from the back and all the high will come from the front, a sweep or guitar solo would move all over. That might get old really "fast"

pros and cons to both designs. Assuming the drivers and crossovers are the same then: 1) Coaxial speakers have the benefit of better integration, less lobing, suck-out and destructive interference at the cross-over frequency but may have some intermodulation distortion because the tweeter is effectively mounted on a constantly moving surface i.e. the mid-woofer cone. Also, they are less flexible in terms of placement. 2) Component speakers may suffer lobing and comb-filtering if the tweeter is placed too far away from the mid-woofer but you do get the flexibility of tweeter placement - just don't place them more than 1/2 wavelength away from each other.

Another option for keeping the tweeter protected while using an active crossover, is adding a capacitor between the tweeter and the amp. So any low frequency that could come through, be it power on thump or a DSP failure, it'd have protection. Plus the capacitor will also help block any DC power caused by clipping. I've bought some 100uF and 50uF capacitors to use for the protection for my Dayton Audio ND25TA-4 tweeters I'll be using in my car audio project, since I'm going to be using AudioControl's DSP based amplifiers for a full DIY 3-way configuration in my CR-V. :) The sale of the AudioControl amps on Crutchfield helped me pull the trigger on the D-6.1200 and the D-4.800, the only thing that disappointed me, which is not the fault of Crutchfield at all, is the fact no one makes any bypass harnesses for the factory amp in the 2012 ~ 2016 Honda CR-V. Oh well, I'm working on making my own harness using a used factory amp for the connectors, customizing a PCB for those connectors, and going to run the differential-balanced signals from the headunit straight into the AudioControl amps! Utilizing the amp turn on and amp mute signals will be easy with a couple of solid state relays. A Normally Open and a Normally Closed relay should do the trick nicely there. I'll likely document my work as I keep going. Thank you for all the inspirations you've been providing, Mark. Despite me primarily being heavily into DIY on my home theater system, you've still provided great tips and how to guides I feel are beneficial for future DIY projects within the home along with the car. :)

@saardean4481 Жыл бұрын
In the crossover you are holding I see a "Bi-amp" (ing) input which means that you can drive all drivers individually meaning you can dip the tweeter level all you want as it will have a designated amp channel driving it. Just mentioning cause it does not get mentioned in the video. Am Mentioning this I have often seen people simply deciding to not use the crossover and connecting the drivers directly to the amp and call it a day, which is not the best solution acoustically to put it mildly... :-) In this case of "direct connection" you need to use Dsp or a good parametric equalizer in order to correct the frequency plot as a crossover is not only meant to separate the frequency content so the tweeter does not get bass frequencies and vice versa for the woofer but also to balance the frequency plot of the driver as a driver by it self in very (very) rare cases needs no frequency response correction. So This is general information, not directed to the OP of the video which I find wonderful and making superb videos.

I've been doing some digging on this as I'm looking at doing my own system in my car (thanks for all these helpful videos!) It sounds like the general consensus on tweeter placement is to have the tweeters higher (near the dash) than lower. I was curious because JL Audio's user manual says that this placement is sub-par, and that they recommend placing the tweeter slightly lower (see the manual for JL audio's C2-650), basically just above the woofer. I'm curious what you're thoughts are on this? I'm a total beginner so I'm not sure, or even if it makes a big difference. Thanks!

My 2020 Kia forte GT-line didn’t come with the 8 speaker Sound system package. I have frt door speakers w/tweets and rear door speakers w/o rear dash speakers. Factory radio😢 I’d like to upgrade using the component speakers with tweeters. I have the slightest clue on how to connect them using the factory radio. Any suggestions

Most passive component sets have small tweeters due to the need for easy installation in many factory locations, but that means the tweeter must be crossed high since it can’t handle playing lower frequencies. With a high crossover value in a 2 way component set means much of the midrange frequencies are played by the mid bass driver. This lowers your soundstage. With a larger tweeter that’s crossed at 2500hz or lower can really elevate your sound stage and improve SQ. It’s rare to find a passive component set with a large tweeter, so I’ll ask, do you know of any larger format tweeter component sets?

If my car came with door speakers and tweeters in the dash, do I still need the crossover? The factory radio probably sorts that out, right? Like, the highs already aren't going to the 6 1/2s in the doors so I'm good, yeah?

??? Does a small 2" midrange speaker in a 3 component system require an enclosure if mounted in a door? I was thinking that it would. I was thinking about mounting a larger "speaker baffle" behind it. Any thoughts or suggestions please?

Were you a bartender at one time? If you shake those speakers around anymore, they will have to be renamed to Mid Bass Mixers on the Rocks.

Do I need to install an amp? Don't stereos have built in amps? Can I just replace the woofer and not the stock tweeters if my car has tweeters and woofers? Or do I need coax for the built it crossover?

If I wanted to to add a Center Dash channel to a stock 4-channel radio, is it OK to use the left front positive lead, and the right front negative lead with an 8 ohm L-pad to create a center dash mono channel?

I have an existing component speaker system. The "Tweeter" opening in my dash will support a 3.5in coax speaker. "IF" I go with a 3.5 instead of the included tweeter, how would I connect that to the crossover? or would I just bypass the crossover because it already has the capacitors included? Looking at a Kicker 3.5. Thanks
