Hey Mark Great video but I noticed you didn't touch on water parameters as far as pH, GH and KH. Are they important? The following is long but only so I can describe the setup and results and hopefully it helps others. I seem to be struggling keeping shrimp. Tanks are definitely cycled, using sponge filters and are 30 litre (~8G). For plants, I have some small crypts, some java Fern glued on 6" pieces of cholla wood, a few pieces of corkscrew Val, some small amount of java moss, clumps of hair grass plus I'm trying to grow Phoenix Moss on some stone. I have some pieces of Seiryu stone plus about 12 ceramic noodles to help with beneficial bacteria and hiding spots. Initially I had an almond leaf, some Alder cones and some cuttlefish (for calcium) but took out the leaf and cuttlefish thinking it's too much. So I set up these 2 tanks, added 10 yellow shrimp to one and 10 Bloody Mary to the other plus 2 small Ramshorn snails to each to ensure leftover food is eaten and to provide enough waste so the cycle doesn't crash. The initial shrimp added on March 9th. In my yellow shrimp tank, I've pulled a few dead bodies out in the first few weeks, enough to go and buy another 14 on April 14. For the first week or so, I might see 4-5 shrimp but figured they are hiding. This week I've pulled 2 dead ones out in the past 4 days. In the Bloody Mary tank, I only see one or two now - no dead bodies. My pH is 7.4, GH is 14 and KH is 2 and TDS is 437. I also have feeding tubes/trays so I can remove uneaten food with a turkey baster. I use a Shrimp safe liquid fertilizer (JAG Aquatics) as I figure that 10 shrimp and 2 snails wouldn't create much waste. I am at my wits end trying to figure out what I am doing wrong and second guessing everything (hence removal of almond leaf and cuttlefish). I am thinking of changing the Seiryu stone out for some dragon stone. All the research I'm doing doesn't seem to be helping or is 10 shrimp too small a number as a starting colony? I appreciate it if you've got this far and are happy to offer suggestions or advice. Thanks in advance.

As far as kh and gh go when it comes to neos, consistency is better than perfect. Neos can adapt to most water hardness parameters, they need a calcium source for their shells. With that being said, some people just will not have good luck with shrimp in their tap water, be it for many reasons, contaminants in water that the test kits simply do not pick up. You may have other unwanted stuff in your water not related to gh or kh. My gh and kh is much higher than yours, but my tds is like 250 out of the tap and 280 to 300 in tanks.

@@MarkShellyAquatics Many thanks for replying. I will give it a few more weeks and if nothing improves, I will see if my local fish shop has the minerals to add into RO water as I know they sell RO water. As for calcium source, what do you recommend? Crushed coral, cuttlefish, something else? I gather it will also be needed by the ramshorn snails. Thanks again
@MarkShellyAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Crushed coral is good. But it will raise your hardness, which is want you want if you have too soft of water. But if you are remineralizing RO water then it is not needed, the salts you add will have everything the shrimp need. Also remember that once you choose what kh and gh to be at, you must always stay there. They cannot take continuous changing. It needs to be the same all the time.

@@MarkShellyAquatics Thanks Mark, I appreciate your replies. It's given me something to think about. This morning I can see just 3 yellow ones and one red. Everytime I see them, they aren't active. They just sit in the same place for hours and they don't appear to be eating. I guess if I go down the RO route, I will need to work out the best way to totally replace the water without crashing the system and at the same time acclimatized them to the new water. Hopefully these long posts of mine help others who are trying to start and having losses too. Thanks again.

Thank you Viola, I really appreciate it. Got some unexpected days off and have been wanting to make some nicer videos, with those days off I decided to make a couple videos where I put in some time and effort. This one ended up taking over 12 hours to make lol. Normally its just an idea I have in my head, hit the record button and start running my yapper with no plan, just an idea lol. My college speech professor would be proud, made outlines with notes and everything lol.

I am keeping them in my 'new' shrimp tank, but I put one of my old sponge filters in it, and an old sheet of moss covered in algae. I did buy some expensive foods but I'll check that out later.

No one in particular lol, just something I've noticed going on. Lots of new people buying shrimp, which is awesome, love helping people get into this very rewarding hobby. I see so many people on face book getting horrible diseased shrimp, and see lots of the same things going on, and thought this video would be a big help.

The fancy foods work fine if you use them right, but very easy to throw way too much in there. I've heard that you really dont even wanna put half of what those foods recommend. I breed 1000s with cheap flake food and algae wafers lol, its not needed. Lots of stuff out there people push as needed for shrimp, they're just trying to separate your money from your wallet lol.
