Fairly new to hunting. Started doing it on my own on family’s land. What I’ve started doing is reaching out to people that been hunting for lots of years and try to hunt with them or pick their brain and institute things learned on my areas to hunt. Biggest struggle for me right now is keeping myself from going to my spots so often. I enjoy the outdoors and try to be out as much as I can.

Great advice. I’d recommend going out scouting a couple days after a light snow, because finding tracks, dominant trails and bedding areas are all so much easier with some snow on the ground.

I’d love to see Dan or John come into my exact hunting spots and watch what they’d do. It’d be worth a fortune to watch them take off hunting on my home turf.

I go grouse hunting/deer scouting after rifle and muzzleloader season end in northern Minnesota and locate trails beds rubs and scrapes if snow is not covering them. Backtrack deer to bedding or feeding areas. It really shows where they browse along their way to and from bedding also. Find buck sign in new areas I have never been in and locate best spot for future trail camera locations and possible stand locations to be placed. Helps if not too much snow is on the ground yet so they are still in late fall areas not yarded up yet.

Good advice for any hunter. I’ve been bowhunting for 35 years and I still try and go to seminars and walk new ground.

Great advice! I would say for me, the difference is weather. I can scout ANY day in the spring, but I need to save those vaca days for when that cold front doesn’t care that it’s Tuesday-Thursday in October. I’ll be scouting weekends this spring 👍

Great advice! Also, go out and try things. Make mistakes. Figure out why the thing you tried either worked or didn’t work. Listen to an watch your friends for the same info. I also like to journal. I log everything I can think of every time I go out. Weather, time, what I saw, what I did. Things that seemed to work. Things that screwed everything up. Break down the victories and figure out what you did right. I bet you didn’t just get lucky.

I’ve been thinking along the lines of what you said Josh. I think I’ll be better served to use some vacation time scouting instead of hunting. I’ve been to Eberhart’s workshop and Troy Pottenger’s. Both were good, but a lot of what they say is found in their podcasts. A boots on the ground would probably serve me better than anything else.

I’m not going to say I’m a great hunter, but a few things I’ve learned/actually experienced this year: spring scouting is huge, historically data is pretty accurate, when the ground isn’t as hard as a rock from drought tracks can’t lie to you, sometimes you gotta follow your gut. These things all played a part in my 2024 season and it was my best season yet.

Totally agree with this. The best way to be better at literally anything is to surround yourself in people better. People who are more experienced. Be humble. Put aside your preconceived notions and be open minded. Wanna be better? Be willing to know less than everyone in your circle. Be the least skilled in your circle. And if you are the best in your circle, go seek more and better and bring it back to your group.

Do Dan and John ever do workshops in Hill Country? I only ever see them in swamps, which don’t get me wrong is helpful, but in my area 95%+ of my public is hill country and not swamps

Good pair of binos and a harness. Go back out and hunt squirrel as an excuse and wander around and watch during the crepuscular times.

If I was new to hunting I’d probably learn everything about scouting as I could either from watching KZbin, or going to a workshop. Taking notes on everything, then take those notes out into the field with me. Spend more time scouting than hunting. Scouting is the most important part of hunting. You learn how to scout the kills will come later.

Hmm, i feel like scouting (and workshops that teach it) are just a small part of the puzzle for a new hunter, and can definitely come to take on more significance than they should. If you're truly new to hunting you should be sitting high traffic areas and looking to fill your tags with the first legal deer that come by. I really can't think of any other way to learn how to take a calm shot, when to draw your bow back, how to see deer before they see you, sit still, walk quietly, and the other skills that pro hunters take for granted. Gaining years worth of confidence just harvesting deer will allow you to launch towards trophy hunting if you choose. The Beast said on his video the other day that because he's hunting close to big buck bedding he's not seeing deer at least half his sits. If you've put your time in to master simple tag filling, that's fine, but IMO it's going to discourage you real quick and take the fun out of it, especially when you're making newbie mistakes and further reducing those encounters. And if you're really competing against the buddies, wanting to win the big buck pissing match... don't know what to tell you. Maybe that the feeling of being top of the heap at the end of the season isn't worth the misery that most hunting brings with it. Merry Christmas Josh.

As soon as the season is over go walk the area you hunt very very thoroughly. Learn it like the back of your hand. Disturb every nook and cranny and come next season it will pay dividends

I'm going to use Dans workshop with a blank slate from how i normally would attack a property. During spring scouting I'm also checking for birds... I also tend to scout a little more when I trout fish...

Not sure if their even doing classes anymore as they are getting up in age but there is no one, and I mean NO ONE knows more about KILLING mature bucks than Gene and Berry Wensil. There trophy wall, taken with traditional bows is surpassed by no one.

What part of PA? I know Steve Sherk has one in the Northwest part of the State. As well as Beau Martonik. I think both are mostly Hill Country set ups.

Spend time in the woods . Giving people money to tell things might shorten the time but you still need to go out on foot with maps and use your brain
