I'm a russian high school student, and to be an archaeologist was my dreamsince my childhood. I read hundreds of books about ancient Egypt, Greece and etc. I was told that it's not possible for me to become one, because in Russia it's a very badly paid job, so I forgot about this idea for a number of years. I didn't study history in school, because I thought I wouldn't need that. One day, I was cleaning up my room and I found my favourite book about Egypt from my childhood. I spent the entire evening reading the book later that day. I realised, I don't want ANY other job than this. Now I'm studying history as hard as I can from the beginning and I hope I'll be successfully passing the exams this May. Then, I will have some time in 10th and 11th grades before going to the Uni. But as I mentioned earlier, in russia it's a poor paid job (492 dollars per month), so I'm planning to study abroad. I've been studying English language since 4th grade, and it's obvious I'm not perfect at it, so it'll be challenging for me. But now I know, I'm NOT going to give up this time. I'm NOT going to give up on my dreams. If this is your dream job too - please don't give up. No matter how hard it would be to become one. I'll leave it here as a promise to my future self!

As a post graduate student of Archaeology I have realized that to become an archaeologist you should must have some knowledge on history, anthropology, geography, geology, paleontology, mapping, surveying, art and drawing skills, biological sciences, environmental science, mathematics or quantitative techniques and today GIS and Remote sensing technology and other subjects from earth science can help you to understand the whole process..on the other hand knowledge of physics and chemistry is plus point for you........it is not necessary that you should have all the background of those subjects but you can developed the knowledge yourself.......adventure spirit and curious mind also help you to become and Archaeologist .........Archaeology is very broad subject which covers many aspects from other branches.....if you have a desire to become an archaeologist you can do it......any one can become and Archaeologist if you have dream for it...best of luck and go ahead ....

sai krishna In which subject you had completed your degree ? Its depend on different universities where they require specific qualifications for Archaeology....they require specialization on some certain subjects like anthropology or history to study Archaeology....if your from science background it is great plus point for you.....so if your among anthropology or history background then you are qualified for Master in Archaeology....some other universities provide open categories for Archaeology....You can contact those universities where you want to get your Archaeology degree..Basically after doing graduation you are eligible for Master in Archaeology..But after all you have some basic knowledge all subjects which I had mentioned on my previous post...Go ahead and best of luck...

For those interested in Archaeology, I have some tips: you need to make sure you're an outdoors/roughing it type of person. I started volunteering/working in high school for the YCC (youth conservation corps), we would build trails with picks and shovels, haul rocks to build rock walls, dig urban gardens, honestly very similar tools and work ethics you use in Archaeology. You work in remote areas generally. I then started mentoring with a Cultural Resource Management (CRM) firm in high school. From there, I got my undergrad in Archaeology and at the same time worked in the same firm's lab while taking classes. You are required to take a field school before getting a secure job in Archaeology, so I did a two week field school in Belize...and then did three other field schools after that. Local field schools are cheaper compared to exotic ones. I decided to go for my Master's in Archaeology, and through that decided I was ready to be an archaeologist for the federal government compared to working in academics/museums (think stereotype Archaeology, what you see in this video), or working in CRM work/private companies, which account for a good 60% of jobs in Archaeology. Fields related to Archaeology include cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, museum studies, and also hard sciences such as geology, geography and ecology. Technology expertise that's used in Archaeology includes GIS/mapping software, photogrammetry, ground penetrating radar, drones, radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology, and a whole lot more. Hope this helps, Feel free to message me if you have any questions. :)

I have been wanting to talk to an archeologist for about 25 years. I found something in south Texas yrs ago, and I thought it was exciting. While building a road, a cut had been bulldozed through a small hill. It was white in color. On close examination I found an 8" layer of limestone complete with millions of normal size snail shells (fossils) imbedded in the rock. Directly below this layer was another. This was maybe 6 inches thick and made up of nothing more than millions more snail shells. These were not formed into any rock but what you might call "free standing". Had it not been for another 5or 6 " layer of limestone sandwiching these from below, I wouldn't have thought that layer of shells had been there any great amount of time. Not exactly like finding a mummy or an Aztec burial chamber but it works for me.

You would be covered by a wetsuit and underwater while not being so close to the equator (depending on which site). And there are vast cave systems that have relics in them as well as the relics of an ancient civilization having built it’s home and other infrastructure into the wall. You would be underground and pretty safe. Also, there is probably a lot pf work you can do in an office such as cleaning up finds, restoring them, figuring out what they were used for and setting up exhibits inside of a museum.

Have I doomed myself or do I still have a chance? *Little rant- I think it’s silly some people end of studying a certain field throughout school only to graduate with no clue of a dream career. Then when they figure out their ambition the career usually requires experience and grades for that career from school! Not everyone can find that little spark so early!

@Fatihah Alim Egyptology is basically the studies of all thing Ancient Egypt-related: history, language(s) and scripts, literature, archaeology, geography, religion, architecture, art.... from the first people who settled in Egypt until the Arab conquest in 681 A.D. Assyriology is the study of the Ancient Near East - Akkadians, Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, possible also Hittites. But it's more philological, at least in Germany. Still, there is a special branch of archaeology that focuses on the more archaeological part of the Ancient Near East.

Did we underestimate their skills? Did aLiEnS dO iT? You won't believe what the ancient alien theorists said this time!" Really though, this work interests me. I get a good amount of freedom and independency, aside from some teammates I work with and the people I might report my work to. Though this line of work grants you mobility.

The biggest corruption as part of archaeological research is Egyptology’s interpretive way of dissecting what they have found all the type of rituals that would take place are now being bought back in a way that completely contradicts the betterment of humanity and its principles when those values helped cause the damnation of Egypt itself. Cleopatra was a woman who had sex slaves I want to become an Archaeologist just to find the understanding and knowledge of history And since I don’t plan on having a family I’m willing to take on what I must. Patience is a must and that also requires a reasonable amount of energy. But there are people who have powers that are indeed “the unseen”

It all depends on what fields you want to go into. The place I'm submitting a volunteering application for offers archives, digital, education and care/conservation. I'd do research on that and then try find volunteering options nearby! I personally think that having volunteering on your CV in a similar field will greatly help! Do a lot of research as well into companies offering work experience as well! The corporate ladder in archaeology goes as follows: a digger (digging around the sites, working in groups etc/basically whats in this video) to a site supervisor and then to a project manager/a managerial role, which will offer the best salary. Its up to you to do research into what these entail! I'd recommend climbing the ladder as high up as possible purely so you can live comfortably, as the beginning salary may be below average where you live :) I hope this helps!

It seems really fun to do all this and find things from so many years ago just seems so cool. Figuring out the story and how they lived is equally as cool. But Im only in 8th grade so my viewpoint may change. Im guessing if you want to be an Archaeologist you have to like Social Studies, right? Well, for the past few years Social Studies has been so boring, learning about how the United States was founded and stuff like the Civil War and Industrial Revolution. That stuff seems too boring to me for some reason and its not like finding really old stuff. Things like the Otzi Iceman thing seems so cool and fun to think about. And the Roman Empire and The Pyramids of Egypt and stuff, that is all so awesome. I just need to know more about this type of stuff. But I heard you need to work and groups and stuff, and that doesn't really work out for me. But still Im gonna try it anyway. Have no clue what Im gonna do when I get older but hopefully its not boring!

As an Archaeology Student at U. of Oklahoma, I'd suggest that you go to a museum and volunteer, it will give you some aspects on what the Archaeologist does in the lab and ask questions, remember that the only dumb question is the one that is not asked. find out what area interests you (Time Frame:Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian, Plains Village, Historical) and (Area: Southeast, Northeast, Great Basin, Pacific, Northwest, Arctic) you get the picture, and read peer reviewed articles concerning your area and time of interest. Now here is my advice when you go to college. 1. Find a University that offers a degree in anthropology (U. of Okla., U. of Fla., U. of Miss., Miss. State, Florida State, U. of Alabama, etc) 2. Once you've selected and accepted into a school, acquaint yourself with fellow archaeology students and professors 3. STUDY, STUDY and STUDY lol idk how much I need to emphasize this, but it is important that you do it. 4. Volunteer to go on digs 5. Intern in an archaeological lab

I've only found information that leads to academia programs. I have zero interest in learning what other believe they know, first hand. I need training on recording and excavating. That's the problem I've run into. To learn that, I have to go pay 1000s of $$ to enter some program, where some professor depends on my continuing to pay, in order for the privilege of being allowed into the community. If you have a suggestion, on who may provide excavating training, I'm very interested. Responsible documentation is important......but if it proves to difficult, it will be a nonsubject when we gear up for the job to excavate historical items.

My 10 year old wants to become an archeologist. Can anyone give me advice on how I can involve her in activities that taps into archeology? She has this passion for Natives in America & she said “she would like to find their artifacts & give them back to them.” I don’t know if that’s possible, but that’s what her goal is & I admire her for that. Now, I understand why my child since preschool & to this day she enjoys digging & finding things. My mommy brain just realized that right now lol wow!

Sorry this is a late reply, I'm studying it at my college right now. Some states offer archaeology days where even kids can get involved and learn more about the profession. The events CAN be a little kiddish but it's in good, culturally sensitive fun. Looking at the one California hosted from last year, but it mostly focused on our indigenous populations, so you're probably in luck. They aren't just stuff the state runs either, it's actually more often tied to THE Archaeological Institute of America, so you'll know it's not some bogus means to stimulate anything short than just an educational experience. A really fun thing that my dad wanted to try (but never did) was to simulate an excavation. You can grab a few pieces of flint, cheap arrowheads, or anything other manmade, find a local place (even if it's in your backyard, or off a hiking trail, bury it give it some time, and then take your little one out to simulate the dig. Not everything found will be this amazing instance of discovery, so (for the lack of better verbiage) littering your little site with broken pieces of pottery, things that simualte Olduwan technology, will mimic the trends in the profession. Obviously there's not much on the chemistry aspect or dating, but it gets your kid active, and to think critically (even at an early age) if this is something they are interested in. Obviously don't be bringing a shovel to a national park, but you get the point. Make-do sifters, trowels, brushes, are all cheap to get and with a little creativity you can find an easy means to recreate it. One thing to deeply consider to is, have your kid explore all aspects of Anthropology. Achaeology is actually very broad but is a subdisipline to Anthro. Best of luck and I hope this reaches to you well.
